Please, if you ever thought of giving up on the future of humanity, listen to this, it demonstrates the beauty of ourselves, if only given half a chance
Wonderful playing... absolutely. And Weiss is absolutely under-appreciated..
Precioso. Muchas gracias.

I stumbled on this years ago and it was perhaps the best musical discovery I ever made. Just absolutely glorious music.
So true.💫
Same here!
I discovered the works of Weiss years ago thinking it was JS Bach because no one could write such beautiful lute music. I was wrong. :)
Same here! I bought all of the Weiss/Barto cds on Naxos. Great stuff.

A happy childhood memory. Between showings, in a theater that is no more, they would play Weiss' timeless music. One could feel content and needing nothing else.

Thank you very much for this deep, precise and touching recording which gives me back the feeling that it exists an intact world
I adore listening to this while I am eating. So civilised; relaxing yet alert.
Thank you ♥️
My heart is rent, thinking of my beloved children and how I want to hold their little hands and hold them when I get to Heaven. Heal my heart o Lord.

Glorious performance. Very much like the resonance from the room.
Thanks for the upload. Thank you RUclips. I would never have found this music if you had not uploaded it and RUclips had not put it in my queue. I am buying the CD now.
He was the greatest lute composer.
His sense of pace, and the elegance of his writing for the lute, combined with a singular eloquence in utilizing the expressive power of the lute were unsurpassed.
What about Bach's lute works?
@@amarillohendrix4207 Weiss is better than Bach for lute, hands down. Weiss is lute god.
@@zappafile123 Correct. Wess is baroque Luth's top notch. Bach's Luth works are mostly transcriptions from other instrument that he played magnificently. However, Bach's is undoubtedly better music.
Despite being the court lutenist to the Saxon king, Weiss sought out Bach's friendship. Look it up.
@@amarillohendrix4207 They were written by Bach under the impression from the works of Weiss after they got acquainted. Weiss was better lutenist (who friendly competed with JSB in fugue improvisation), Bach was better composer :)

I have spent many hundreds of hours listening to Bach Cello Suites alone, not to mention his other musical works I listen to all downtime hours of the day, how have I not run across Weiss sooner??!
Bach...
If Weiss had left us with music for orchestra, voices, or keyboard, he would be routinely mentioned along with Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi. If he is not, it is likely because lute music is, today, not easily accessible to the musical public, except on recordings, such as these. Still, Barto's playing is outstanding in all respects and a pleasure to hear.
Weiss was a lutenist - Bach was an all-round musician and composer: there is a world of difference. We have no way of knowing if Weiss was capable of writing music for anything other than the lute. The fact that he seems not even to have tried argues that he couldn't, and recognised it: he knew his strength and did not stray outside it. Chopin is a similar case: his piano music reaches the greatest heights possible, but his few attempts at orchestral writing are unimpressive.
@@DieFlabbergast He actually *did* try. We know from written accounts that he composed a small amount of chamber music with strings, but these pieces are unfortunately lost today. Weiss obviously has intimate music theory knowledge or he wouldn't be able to compose such masterful counterpoint. It is very likely that he had familiarity with keyboard, though he wrote no music for it (this is also true of composers like Vivaldi or Corelli).
It is unfortunate that his only surviving music is for the lute, but this is for obvious reasons, he was ultimately a damn fine lutenist.
Actually we found some of his ensemble stuff in the Harrach/Rohrau manuscript. It's real good. @@sameash3153
@@iiirdeyeheretik I just discovered the Tempesta di Mare recordings of his concertos the other week. Heard it on classical radio, blew my mind when the announcer said it was Weiss. Real good stuff. Honestly it was better than I could have imagined it.

@@shiroumxm2052 I'm quite sure that "edsa1318" knows that and doesn't need to be upbraided.. His/Her comment is entirely apt, IMO, since the lute is the precursor to the guitar.

Sir, you don't play an instrument, rather, with your instrument and your virtuosity, you evoke happy and joyful emotions. Many compliments on your musicianship! First time I listened, I listened to 100% of the duration of the performance.
Weiss sempre grandioso stupisce sempre. Ottimo Robert Barto
Pura y simplemente, belleza. ¡Gracias por compartirla con el mundo!
I listen to this a lot. It is so congenial to most any mood. Wonderful stuff!
Que suerte haber encontrado esta música.
Whenever I'm down or whatever I can always count on my friend Silvius Leopold, whose music is so harmonious and beyond its sheer formal beauty carries such an emotional range and a true healing vibe. Thanks for posting this!
I completely agree. I was in a mood and found this was exactly what needed to find my balance.

This genius surely is a match for J.S. Bach. Quality of the highest order runs through all this music. I could not be distracted from listening until the last note of the final piece had been played.
To me music like this is a mainstay In my everyday life !
I have not yet heard a single one of Weiss's lute compositions that are not harmonically rich, inventive or dull... I could listen for hours. Just divine!! ♥️

beautiful playing - everything flows so naturally - allowing the wistful beauty of the music 2 truly shine
Well stated.✨
I was so waiting for this! Bob Bart is my favorite lute player by far. He has all the skills required to play Leo Weiss. The most important one is to admire and respect the silence.
we honor the silence, amongst ourselves, amongst ourselves
lots can play music, but only a few can play for music.
16th/17th Cent music for the incomparably-sweet lute is of the pinnacles of western art music. We are so blessed to have the music of Weiss & Dowland....
I concur.
Bravo!
Weiss needs a great musician to bring out the magic and found one here - effortless, natural and imaginative.
Thanks for all the ads!
I could listen to this all day! Very pleasant!

Sir, this encapsulates the essence of Baroque Grandeur, Zeitgeist, tenderness, pathos, levity, the whole gamut of human emotions...for me the Baroque Suite was the harbinger of the European Union in the 18th Century , and Mr. Barto your rendition of these Sonatas is easily one of the best I've encountered. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Harry S. Joseph, Bangalore, India
Weiss moves me to great admiration. He is the master of some aspect of music that will never lose its beauty or relevance. Question: is an audience of two people too large for the lute? Is it intended for one person only? The player?

I have played quite a bit of Weiss on guitar. Not anymore I'm getting a lute.
Lovely. So delightful to sit and just listen. Thank you.
Absolutely fantastic! Very soothing, to de-stress! Thank you!
Well..... that was a satisfying hour of my life.
Weiss is so **king good. Its no wonder there was a mutual admiration between him and J.S.
I think Weiss didn't think Bach was at his level.. The lute was popular and so was Weiss... I'm not aware of Bach having transcribed and Weiss..
Bach was appreciated mostly after his death. He was seen as a nerd who writes nice religious cantatas in his time. I think people didn't really understood the complexity and beauty behind his secular works.
@@ofsabir sorry if im misunderstanding what you mean by secular works. Yes, a lot of what he wrote was not meant for use in worship services and what not, but bach said that God was the inspiration and the exaltation of God was the meaning of all his works. idk but we can enjoy his music no matter what our background is :)
@@ofsabir While Bach wrote both religious and secular music, it was his religious music, including the cantatas and the passions, that fell out of popularity until Mendelssohn "resurrected" it, kicking off the Bach renaissance that has continued ever since (he premiered the first modern performance of Bach's St. Matthew passion, for instance). Bach's secular music, on the contrary, remained continually popular among musicians, composers, and pedagogues alike, never really falling out of fashion. As Bach was a faithful individual, all of his music could technically be considered spiritual.
Great pieces with a truly remarkable sense of melody, a joy to listen to.
Perfect Fall into Winter music...thank you so much

My own personal space and meditation whilst listening to this beautiful and pulsating music was ruined by the unwelcome and raucous adverts. that obtruded. at the least expected times. (I ought not to have to resort to paying cash to have such irritations removed in the future).
Download AdBlock - free and it works brilliantly. I agree there's nothing worse than having this delightful music crashed by adverts! :-)
ad blocker
I had been where you are re obnoxious ad-interruptions - & resent not so much paying for wonderful music as being the passive object of "push" marketing. The various ad blockers work unreliably. By chance, I tried Opera browser, for different reasons; it seems to block ads consistently. I'm told the same is true of the browser Brave. We should spend our money buying audio CD's, or downloads that we own (not rent); we should also respect YT in running ads that a.) are inserted before/after compositions; & b.) are chosen to bear some relation to the expected tastes & interests of, in our case, listeners to classical music. Personally, I have yet to see any statistical evidence that push marketing & big-data spying actually increases sales revenue to various manufacturers &/or vendors of any product or service. There seems, instead, to be a cultural issue of wanting to control the public at large. Just a thought.
Musica stupenda magistrale tecnica e maestria. Complimenti a Robert Barto

Wonderful playing... absolutely. And Weiss is absolutely under-appreciated.

Very pleasing to my ears.
I got some lute songs stuck in my head from playing Skyrim. Still the classical guitar is most romantic out of the string instruments IMO.
