I love that Gretsch Hammered Steel. That would work in many genres. I have a rare Gretsch 6x12 Brass snare. Rare as in I can't hardly find out anything about it.
A&F drums with the higher tuning here. I mainly play Ludwigs and love a 6.5 black beauty but also have Acros and love um all. My fav is probably my 65 Supraphonic...with a COB bottom hoop. It's great to have different flavors to choose from for the tracks when recording.
I couldn't decide for a long time which snare drum to buy, and eventually concluded that the best one is the one from the same series of drums as my set.
A&F both is so nice and rich sounding drums. Of course Acrolite and Sugar is nice too. In simply live situations, I never like the Acrolite to much, but here it sounds very cool.
The AnF for sure the tuning range for those drums is amazing! I liked the Sugar also and I was surprised by the Acrolite since I grew up always playing a Supraphonic!
we didn't have time to tune all the drums (obviously 3 tunings per drum would be a ridiculously long video) so this was more of a testing of each drums sweet spot that we prefer them at ... anyways yes the range of some of these snares is fantastic!
I have a Ludwig Acrolite in 'Black Galaxy' finish, and also a Ludwig 'Supersensitive' 5 x 14" chromed finish. I actually prefer the Acrolite as it has a bit 'warmer' sound with less overtones than the Supersensitive. They have same batter and snare side heads and are tuned similarly. I understand the shell material is the same must be the coating applied to the Acrolite shell dampens it just a bit. That Gretsch hammered steel snare rocks.
The hammerec brass, could be called work harded,by hammering, definetly has a higher reflection, from the surface, and density of the shell after hammered.
@@jeffbrown8821I don’t know but something very fair! I’d be happy that someone is playing and creating music with it :) find me on Instagram and send me a message!
Presentations like this really expose the limitations on these media platforms. No mix by even the greatest engineers can duplicate the experience you and Sean had live in person with these masterful instruments. This really gives me hope for our cognitive work. For certain human engagements, we still need in person involvement. BRAVO, BRAVO BRAVO. (FYI; the Woodland P is "wifey" 😍😄😍😄😍❤️
So many of these were great. I thought the weakest was the A&F brass. From a budget perspective and overall sound, you can’t go wrong with the Acrolite, a very close second to the Sugar.
listening back I have to say you make some very good points!! By the way, I happen to be selling both the acrolite and the sugar (the A&F is not mine) ... if you happen to know someone looking!
The acrolite here is pretty average "middle of the road" sounding, and that's kind of the point of it. It always works fine and is never bad. That said, I prefer acros in lower tunings instead of the medium/medium-high more middle of the road tuning it has here
I’ve never owned the Acrolite in black but in aluminum/Gray 2x. Any chance it snares a bit different with the black paint? I loved it immediately in 1990 when I first heard it because it was a bit woody and earthy for a metal drum but still had a nice ring as well. I have always sweared by that Pork Pie snare. I watched 3 or 4 sell in a day or two at GC when they first came out. That Pork Pie is a great drum as well.
😂 did that really end before you answered?! Personally I love Sugar drums, they just always sound next level to me, as does the snare here but so many others to compare to, really enjoyed this video. 👊👍🥁
I have myself one of those Gretsch hammered brass 14x6.5 snares and it’s really great. Happy to see a video and review of it since I haven’t seen many with that snare. Altogether really great video. Subscribed Note: Shouldn’t that snare be a 6.5? I could be wrong but I thought it was a 6.5 not 6.
1. Sugar poplar....jeopardy theme....2.A&F steel 3.Woodland Birch 4.A&FBrass 5.Acrolite(but that isn`t not really something new!)....didn`t like the rest very much.
Wow, really unjust due to the Pork Pie Brass snare. Possibly it’s worst tuning, crank that junk up! One of the best snares you can get, along with Tamas G Maple and Starphonic Copper.
I agree with how good it is! This is how WE liked to use it, not a video where we test nine snares in four different tuning each for 45 minutes straight. And tuned low, it honestly sounds really cool in the right song :)
What's YOUR favorite snare drum?
Sugar, A&F Raw Steel For Sure
I’ve been recording with these two a lot lately!
The Pork Pie would be a wonderful second next to that Sugar ❤️❤️❤️
Sugar ! Thinking about getting a yellow one
Hard to beat yellow!
I'm a Ludwig guy. I bought a new Supralite 14"x 8" steel. Coated Emperor or C.S.dot, tuned medium/high. $199
Great drum at a great price. 😊
For records I’d go with sugar or acrolite. For personal preference A&F (also the stetics does a lot 🤣)

6x12?! That sounds crazy cool… what do you like using it for?
@@DimitriFantini I've used it on many things. It's got a great tuning range. Snagged it off eBay for 50 bucks 5 years ago.

dig the perspective!
My current favorite is the Tama SLP bubinga. It'll go low, med, and hi with no problems.
Bubinga is such a great wood for drums. I used to own the Tama Warlord series Masai Bubinga snare. That’s the one snare I regret letting go!
@@DimitriFantini I bet
Sugar, AF (bigger one), Gretsch Brass 👌

Just grab a Ludwig Supraphonic 14x6.5 and you’re done.
Thanks Dimitri, loved this video. Such high quality and fun. The Sugar and the A f raw steel were my favourites. But my #1 would be sugar for sure.

they both sounded pretty phenomenal!
Im saving up 8k to get one

This is sick!
you're the best Maru!!!
Both drummers remind me of my brother and I, we can play the same drum kit yet it sounds a little different between us.
I’ve always wanted that Pork Pie 13” patina snare
acrolite! my choice , my snare upgraded with diecast hoops
diecast hoops, very nice
I have 3 Acrolites with slightly different tunings. None of mine have the Supraphonic lugs like yours though. Yep, I caught that. 😃
That's the reason it caught my eye too! Well the truth is, I still have it, but I'm not keeping it. If you know anybody looking for a 4th acrolite ...

There’s no one best snare. It’s all slightly different flavors.
Gretsch hammered brass 👍🏿
I was really impressed and surprised by the Gretsch Hammered Steel. There's a black batter head on it? Which kind of head is that? Thanks.
not sure off the top of my head as this was filmed a long time ago! I think it might have been two ply
What is that snare between 3 and 4 mins .. it sounds amazing !!
You can’t go wrong with a Ludwig snare….unless you drop in a brass Gretsch 😮
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Can someone link me to the bumblebee snare? I can't find it anywhere and loved the sound!
