Spot on review! My favorite I’ve heard. I’m always so happy y’all do deep dives into the themes of films and aren’t scared to give actual takes on meanings. Deeply appreciated!
I just got back from watching this and first thing when I got home was to check what you two gentleman thought. For me it’s 7/10 I loved it. Florida Project is great too
I wouldn't necessarily say that the first hour drags, it takes you to the highest highs and slaps you face down with reality in the second half. If the things that happened in the first half weren't shown, we wouldn't have been much bothered about Ani's realisation of self-worth and self-love in the end. For me, i felt the first half was fast, to show how easily the concept of a fairy tale romance can sweep u off your feet. The marriage happened after a week. If Sean had shown every little thing that led to Vanya asking Ani out, it would have been more boring. But I'm glad Sean just gave us the bits and pieces of the romance.
I think it was probably an expectation thing. Seeing it with a big crowd with the buzz and it had won the palm D’or, I kept waiting for the movie to hit, if that made sense. And the first hour can feel a bit like prologue. Though it rewatched the film a week or so ago and I found the first hour didn’t drag much at all - blends much better as a rewatch for me.
Had a similar theatre experience seeing it at VIFF last week - it's a crowd pleaser for sure. Some scenes definitely went on for way too long, but I'd be lying if I said this isn't one of the year's best
I love how Sean bakers films his characters NEVER verbally have a conversation of how shitty or about to fall apart their lives are UNTIL the final minute and it’s all done NON VERBAL with just facial expressions. In red rocket, deep down inside Mikey knows what he’s doing is wrong but it’s filmed so authentically in real life u never sit there and say OH MY GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE? Ur just like imma sit here and wait till this 10 pile crash thing dosent fall on me lol. And In tangerine , the only moment of clarity they have is at the very end where they hold hands and about to cry and film CUTS. And here anora has the same thing where throughout the film the reality of her life that she refuses to accept is slowly creeping in until final minute of film when she shows a LITTLE bit of emotional clarity the film ENDS. Perfection . Let the audience figure out how she’s feeling
We did! Sadly we have a bit too much on our plate to review it but enjoyed it! People were absolutely balling in our theatre. I think any parent can relate to the time when your kids flock the nest. The time and effort you put into their growth with little appreciation and then that effort finally being understood and appreciated upon their return. Their absence from each other being a reminder of how much they mean to one another. And the animation! It was so picturesque, every frame like a painting with so much texture and depth.
We probably won't get to review either unfortunately just due to timing. We've been toying with doing an end of the year video with "all the movies we missed" where we quickly review and grade 10 or so big films that we didn't weigh in on.

I haven't seen The Brutalist yet. But Anora is my favourite movie of the year. The Substance is a close second.
