Well, especially in old Germany that was a big deal, because in East Germany, Cabaretists were the only people who were allowed to critizice the state.
They say germans have no humor.. they dont need any, the world is enough of a joke. He is just spittings more facts in 40+ minutes, than a regular new broadcast would in one month.
The funny part is that Pispers never tried to be funny in the first place. He has been touring with his "tell you truths you dont really want to hear show" for decades with hardly ever changing much of its content because the situation he kept rubbing into peoples faces never actually changed either. Instead of using their brains to realize something had to change people preferred to laugh it off until that too became part of the show he was rubbing into their faces. 2015 he retired from stage after recieving some anonymous murder threats for his trouble. So yes, you can laugh about it if you like but the point of the show was to spark a bit of reflection on our own part in this royally broken system and how we all keep working together to ensure none of it ever changes. Thats no different in the US than it is over here in the EU save for the part of the american exceptionalism beeing fed to every kid right from the cradle. We dont hate you for that, we just kinda feel sorry for how you all seem to honestly believe having no healthcare or social security insurance but freedom to bring guns to school instead makes your lifes so much better than ours. :)
@Torches Lustig: None of the historical facts have lost any truth since then. This explains the current political situation in the Middle East, especially the negative sentiments against the USA in the region. It is probably more relevant today than at any point since it was written.

I'm American and was looking for some funny German comedians. I didn't expect to be captivated by this. I started to click out of it several times, but I couldn't resist watching the entire video. Very thought-provoking.
Oh yes, Pispers is great at provoking thoughts. Unfortunately, we Germans have left the time behind, where we could just be happy criticising american foreign policy. Of cource our has always sucked, too, but now we also have a rapid growing extreme right wing and and growing even more extremist nazi-groupswaiting for the political movement to grow big enough to putsch... and far too less People like Pispers who are good at provoking thoughts and alert people.

Sachliche Argumentation z.B. gegen die Impfpflicht müssen gefolgt sein von blinder Befürwortung. Ansonsten, steht man im politischen und sozialen Aus. In den letzten Tagen habe ich bei yt etwa 5 Kanäle entdeckt, in denen sich US-Amerikaner mit diesem Video beschäftigen. So unterschiedlich die Kanäle sind, so ähnlich sind sich die Reaktionen. Da wird denen die Augen geöffnet! Man erkennt , wie wenig die über die Geschichte der us-amerikanische Politik, deren Kriege und deren Vorgeschichte wissen. - Keine Ahnung, wie oft ich dieses Video schon gesehen habe, aber ich hab es immer noch nicht über. Es ist und bleibt eine geniale Analyse der USA!

Das konnte ich beim Pispers öfter beobachten. Die harte Realität die er sehr oft anspricht ist eben nicht immer lustig sondern vor allem beängstigend oder bedrückend.

Holy fuck. I didn’t see how long this was, and thought it was just going to be a quick comedy video, but it turned out to be 45 minutes of this dude spitting straight fucking facts. I was so captured by what he was saying I didn’t even realize that a half an hour had passed before I noticed how long the video was. Top notch.
I hope that you don't take it too serious - for example: the part with Putin being boss of KGB is extremely overexaggerated - yes he was in KGB but his codename "moth" sums his carreer up very well. But in general you can really learn a lot from this video - the most important thing is that you start to doubt things and use your own brains. I wish you good luck!
Volker Pispers presented this comedy project back in 2002, one year after the infamous Incident. The way he talks about Syria being next in line logically (25:40) and how it did not even take a decade for it to turn out true should be pretty terrifying for most people.
Maybe he had the core program ready after 9/11 in 2002. However the quote by defense minister Peter Struck "germany is defended on the hindukush" is from march 2004. So this recording is from that year.

Speaking as an American, I actually found this pretty hysterical. (Thank heavens for subtitles). One has to learn to laugh at oneself! Sadly, many Americans do indeed have a simple world view. Living here is a bit of a headache.

koolaidkix Well, political satire is more serious than comedy. Carlin surely was one of the best comedians ever; Pispers is not a comedian, he's a satirist. Satire is not so much about telling jokes, it's basically a mix of facts, sarcasm and even cynicism, and it's by far more focused on teaching people. And sorry, but it's not even a secret that many Americans do have their problems with sarcasm and cynicism.

What a lovely job on the subtitles. I speak German (originally Dutch though) and I saw 1 or 2 tiny mistakes, but it's written in a brilliant way, with most of the word-jokes intact. And the sneaky explanation of some jokes in between brackets, that's exactly what I used to do when I was subtitle-ing for another channel. If the joke was worthless without the reference, you'd just add it in. Great job on the subtitles!!!
I was able to speak briefly with Pispers after one of his performances. He always took time for his audience even after a performance. I asked him where he thought the motivation was for the super-rich to want to have even more money, because it makes no difference at all in their lives. He said quite succinctly that it's all a huge d*ck comparison. He doesn't appear anymore because he has tried to move people for over 25 years, but nothing has ever changed in terms of voting behavior. But he has moved me, I have become a better person because of him and his clear words. Thanks to him, I know that it is not the unemployed, the foreigners or the unvaccinated who are to blame for a misery, but always the people higher up who decide on laws and their implementation.
If he expected that his shows would sway anyone's vote, he is not quite as intelligent as his shows were. People vote as they do for the stupidest reasons. Self-interest being the chief one among them.

As a german i can say that the subtitles are very accurate. Volker Pispers is an artist to talk about this very important issues. The first his shows make us laugh, but then its in our mind and we think about the f...d up things our "leaders" do.

Watching Volker Pispers, I always feel a weird mix of depression over the things he said, and at the same time enlighenment and gladness to for once hear somebody speak so clear, so true. Excellent translation Carsten, btw ;) You did a very good job, both with uploading that specific video as well as offering such a good translation, making the content accessible for a wider range of viewers.
Recorded in 2004 (18 years ago) the mindful and observant political analysis of his presence and past predicted more of the interim time, than every professional forecaster did. Exactly the same mechanisms in every damn crisis since. I could fill a book about all his points being proven again and again between 2004 and today.
Political cabaret artists are the narrators of today. The fools/narrators were the persons, who could critizise the monarchs and kings until some centuries ago. Political cabaret artists are their descendents.
Al Bundy As most German political satire, it obviously involves a certain level of exaggeration and is decidedly leaning towards the political left, but some of the historical facts alone, such as the U.S. involvement in overthrowing foreign governments, is sth that you really can't argue with and something that a lot of Americans are no longer aware of. So, even if you take this show with a grain of salt, it certainly makes a number of good points.

Man liest die Untertitel schlicht, weil das Auge automatisch auf Bewegung reagier; wenn also Untertitel auftauchen, springt das Auge automatisch dorthin.

Da fand ich damals Trump in einer amerikanischen Morgenshow sogar mal ganz anständig. Die Moderatorin fragte ihn, was er denn in Sachen Assad und Syrien zu unternehmen gedenke. Antwort von Trump damals: Schauen Sie auf den Irak. Schauen Sie auf Lybien. Ja, Hussein und Gaddafi waren keine netten Typen, aber den Islam hat es damals dort nicht gegeben. Also warum sollten wir was gegen Assad unternehmen? Und ich dachte mir: Hey, könnt ja tatsächlich was werden wenn der so weiter macht.

Im Regelfall waren Streitereien zwischen zwei Glaubensausrichtungen, wer von ihnen jetzt den cooleren imaginären Freund hat, meist der Auslöser für viel Leid. Zudem war der Islam in früheren Zeiten um einiges aufgeschlossener als in der heutigen Zeit. Das größte Problem ist, meiner Ansicht nach, dass wir im "Westen" eine Trennung von Staat und Kirche vollzogen haben, während in vielen arabischen Ländern die Religiösen Führer noch viel zu viel Einfluss auf die Politik haben
I've just posted something similar in response to an old commentary thread, but I'd like to reiterate this for all those coming to this video *in search of comedy*, like, judging by past comments, so many did before you: *You're not going to find it here. Volker Pispers is not a comedian. He's a satirist.* Those are two distinct things in the German cultural sphere. That's due to our satire having its roots in theatre, rather than pub culture. In Germany, satirists aren't obliged to provide a high density of punch lines. Some of the best satirists we have make you choke on your laughter rather than provide some light entertainment already forgotten about ten minutes after the show (Volker Pispers, Georg Schramm (sadly, retired), Hagen Rether). When we Germans have a night out and go for this specific kind of entertainment, we know this. And we wouldn't want it any different. Comedy is comedy. Satire is satire. Comedy is not satire. Not saying it can't be, but traditionally, over here it isn't. The way I see it, the difference lies in the goal: Comedy tries to entertain you, while satire tries to educate you. Whenever an artist does manage to straddle the line between comedy and satire, it's regarded as so noteworthy that it's mentioned again and again in everything written about that artist. Dieter Nuhr is an example of this phenomenon.

It is a bit sad that the time of the great German cabaret artists is over. Volker Pispers, Dieter Hildebrand, Werner Schneider, Hans Dieter Hüsch, Matthias Deutschmann, Matthias Belz and many more. They are truly missed on stage while nowadays you have only the quick and easy joke.

Böhmermann would NEVER dare to come up with something that his audience could find thought-provoking, offensive or even pointing out double standards. Juni 2022: Aus gegebenem Anlass sollte Herr Pispers seinen historischen Abriss aktualisieren. Und dann eine Ausstrahlung im Fernsehen, zur Prime Time, gleich nach der Tagesschau. Nie hat Pispers so sehr gefehlt wie in dieser Situation.
Der würde sowas von gecancelt werden heutzutage. Ein Wort das ansatzweise den Anschein erweckt, dass Russland provoziert wurde oder Ähnliches.. schon ist es aus.

they do - most germans do not 'hate' americans, but they (we) dislike the american behavior, their naiveté. In our mind's most americans are like Bill O'Reilly - ignorant, naive, hateful, misinformed, uneducated people who think they're the 'good people'. Do not misinterpret this as 'hate'. Its an opinion from people who made failures and saw them, tried to handle them.

Most germans are exactly like americans, just without the love for guns. They don't care for anything but themselves. Which is also really the same for every country. Everyone that has power abuses it and those without it try to get by. If most people were really as honest and "good" as they claim, the world wouldn't be as fucked up.

Yes we must fight terrorism but not with an army bombing and invading countries. If a few thousands of people are radical terrorists it is just wrong to invade that whole country. People will lose their homes, their loved ones and their jobs. And that just makes recruiting people for terrorist activities way more easy. We are all humans and I would have a grudge too if something or someone that means a lot to me is gone because of a foreign power in my country. I totally understand why people radicalise. This needs to stop. I don't care if you are atheist, muslim, christian, jewish, hindu, shinto, buddhist or even fethishist. We are all humans that just want to live a happy life. If we experience poverty, lack of food or violence we become enemies of our own human race. I hope we can someday live in peace. Having families with the ones we love without any borders or religions to sepperate us.

The funny part is that Pispers never tried to be funny in the first place. He has been touring with his "tell you truths you dont really want to hear show" for decades with hardly ever changing much of its content because the situation he kept rubbing into peoples faces never actually changed either.
Instead of using their brains to realize something had to change people preferred to laugh it off until that too became part of the show he was rubbing into their faces.
2015 he retired from stage after recieving some anonymous murder threats for his trouble.
So yes, you can laugh about it if you like but the point of the show was to spark a bit of reflection on our own part in this royally broken system and how we all keep working together to ensure none of it ever changes.
Thats no different in the US than it is over here in the EU save for the part of the american exceptionalism beeing fed to every kid right from the cradle.

Man erkennt , wie wenig die über die Geschichte der us-amerikanische Politik, deren Kriege und deren Vorgeschichte wissen. - Keine Ahnung, wie oft ich dieses Video schon gesehen habe, aber ich hab es immer noch nicht über. Es ist und bleibt eine geniale Analyse der USA!

Holy fuck. I didn’t see how long this was, and thought it was just going to be a quick comedy video, but it turned out to be 45 minutes of this dude spitting straight fucking facts. I was so captured by what he was saying I didn’t even realize that a half an hour had passed before I noticed how long the video was. Top notch.
I hope that you don't take it too serious - for example: the part with Putin being boss of KGB is extremely overexaggerated - yes he was in KGB but his codename "moth" sums his carreer up very well. But in general you can really learn a lot from this video - the most important thing is that you start to doubt things and use your own brains. I wish you good luck!

Volker Pispers presented this comedy project back in 2002, one year after the infamous Incident. The way he talks about Syria being next in line logically (25:40) and how it did not even take a decade for it to turn out true should be pretty terrifying for most people.
Maybe he had the core program ready after 9/11 in 2002. However the quote by defense minister Peter Struck "germany is defended on the hindukush" is from march 2004. So this recording is from that year.

What a lovely job on the subtitles. I speak German (originally Dutch though) and I saw 1 or 2 tiny mistakes, but it's written in a brilliant way, with most of the word-jokes intact. And the sneaky explanation of some jokes in between brackets, that's exactly what I used to do when I was subtitle-ing for another channel. If the joke was worthless without the reference, you'd just add it in. Great job on the subtitles!!!

I was able to speak briefly with Pispers after one of his performances. He always took time for his audience even after a performance. I asked him where he thought the motivation was for the super-rich to want to have even more money, because it makes no difference at all in their lives. He said quite succinctly that it's all a huge d*ck comparison.
He doesn't appear anymore because he has tried to move people for over 25 years, but nothing has ever changed in terms of voting behavior. But he has moved me, I have become a better person because of him and his clear words. Thanks to him, I know that it is not the unemployed, the foreigners or the unvaccinated who are to blame for a misery, but always the people higher up who decide on laws and their implementation.
If he expected that his shows would sway anyone's vote, he is not quite as intelligent as his shows were.

As a german i can say that the subtitles are very accurate. Volker Pispers is an artist to talk about this very important issues. The first his shows make us laugh, but then its in our mind and we think about the f...d up things our "leaders" do.

Al Bundy As most German political satire, it obviously involves a certain level of exaggeration and is decidedly leaning towards the political left, but some of the historical facts alone, such as the U.S. involvement in overthrowing foreign governments, is sth that you really can't argue with and something that a lot of Americans are no longer aware of. So, even if you take this show with a grain of salt, it certainly makes a number of good points.

@Rexknopf 007 Och nö, lass mal :) Ich halte im allgemeinen nicht viel von Religion. Im Regelfall waren Streitereien zwischen zwei Glaubensausrichtungen, wer von ihnen jetzt den cooleren imaginären Freund hat, meist der Auslöser für viel Leid. Zudem war der Islam in früheren Zeiten um einiges aufgeschlossener als in der heutigen Zeit.
Das größte Problem ist, meiner Ansicht nach, dass wir im "Westen" eine Trennung von Staat und Kirche vollzogen haben, während in vielen arabischen Ländern die Religiösen Führer noch viel zu viel Einfluss auf die Politik haben

I've just posted something similar in response to an old commentary thread, but I'd like to reiterate this for all those coming to this video *in search of comedy*, like, judging by past comments, so many did before you: *You're not going to find it here. Volker Pispers is not a comedian. He's a satirist.*
Those are two distinct things in the German cultural sphere. That's due to our satire having its roots in theatre, rather than pub culture. In Germany, satirists aren't obliged to provide a high density of punch lines. Some of the best satirists we have make you choke on your laughter rather than provide some light entertainment already forgotten about ten minutes after the show (Volker Pispers, Georg Schramm (sadly, retired), Hagen Rether). When we Germans have a night out and go for this specific kind of entertainment, we know this. And we wouldn't want it any different. Comedy is comedy. Satire is satire. Comedy is not satire. Not saying it can't be, but traditionally, over here it isn't. The way I see it, the difference lies in the goal: Comedy tries to entertain you, while satire tries to educate you.
Whenever an artist does manage to straddle the line between comedy and satire, it's regarded as so noteworthy that it's mentioned again and again in everything written about that artist. Dieter Nuhr is an example of this phenomenon.

It is a bit sad that the time of the great German cabaret artists is over. Volker Pispers, Dieter Hildebrand, Werner Schneider, Hans Dieter Hüsch, Matthias Deutschmann, Matthias Belz and many more. They are truly missed on stage while nowadays you have only the quick and easy joke.
Well, there are still people like Christian Ering, Sebadtian Puffpaff and Jan Böhmermann, but you are right, the stars have set

Böhmermann would NEVER dare to come up with something that his audience could find thought-provoking, offensive or even pointing out double standards. He's not the one to spit straight facts, his concept is to lick his audience's butt
We have Max Uthoff and Claus von Wagner.

Juni 2022: Aus gegebenem Anlass sollte Herr Pispers seinen historischen Abriss aktualisieren. Und dann eine Ausstrahlung im Fernsehen, zur Prime Time, gleich nach der Tagesschau. Nie hat Pispers so sehr gefehlt wie in dieser Situation.
Der würde sowas von gecancelt werden heutzutage. Ein Wort das ansatzweise den Anschein erweckt, dass Russland provoziert wurde oder Ähnliches.. schon ist es aus.
Um das alles aufzuarbeiten, was seit seinem Weggang politisch passiert ist, müsste er ein 48 Std Nonstop Programm machen.

Yes we must fight terrorism but not with an army bombing and invading countries. If a few thousands of people are radical terrorists it is just wrong to invade that whole country. People will lose their homes, their loved ones and their jobs. And that just makes recruiting people for terrorist activities way more easy. We are all humans and I would have a grudge too if something or someone that means a lot to me is gone because of a foreign power in my country. I totally understand why people radicalise. This needs to stop. I don't care if you are atheist, muslim, christian, jewish, hindu, shinto, buddhist or even fethishist. We are all humans that just want to live a happy life. If we experience poverty, lack of food or violence we become enemies of our own human race. I hope we can someday live in peace. Having families with the ones we love without any borders or religions to sepperate us.
