The reason why beginner books are selling so well, as opposed to other higher level books is because witchcraft and paganism have a relatively low convert retention rate. People will get into this stuff, buy a beginner tarot book or whatever, do it for a bit and then either get into some more niche form of spirituality or just give up on that stuff all together. Basically, there's no advanced/intermediate books on paganism/occultism is because there's almost no advanced/intermediate practitioners.
@Foolish Fish is pretty transparent in their reviews, but it's done with tact and sensitivity. I appreciate that approach. My only qualm would be the fact that he generally goes for the more elaborate, expensively designed book covers, which is beautiful, but there's quality to less intricately designed covers.
Took the words right out of my mouth. So far spot on his every review. But yes spendy pricey and cash account eater (until the Wen series emerged. Better said TOMES!)
Yes! Spot on. I think though, that the publishers tend to send the nicer looking editions to him automatically, for the specific purpose of him reviewing them on his channel. He usually does mention when there's like a soft cover or less expensive edition of the same book so that people know when something's more affordable. Which I definitely appreciate, as some of us (read as: "me" lol) are not as fortunate at the moment.
Wen series? Oh do elaborate, I'm itching for new material to review. I might have missed that review from Foolish Fish. What's the full title of that series and where can I find it?@samiam3297
I'm interested if you've found any credible grimiore's or (to coincide with the latest Iconoclast episode) any inexpensive books on esoteric symbolism
This is why ethics, showing your work, and being transparent is important in art and creative work. It's also important to aim high, and aim for the eternal - because this rubbish will be published, but the best will always be recognized.
Also, about the Shams al Ma'arif book, there are some letters in Arabic that dont exist in English so it would make sense why it's been selectively translated
Great podcast! I got into the occult in the 80s and most of the books at that time offered a very structured system. Modern books are more" if it feels right,it is right".
Yo is that the Pass of llanberis in the thumbnail? I know of only that place where that harshness of rock structure combines with that lushness of water and grass
I think the core issue with advanced levels of magick is that you have to become creative and mainly draw out substance from within, and since magicians have this nasty habit of always reading to find inspiration they hit a wall and freak out when the training wheels are taken off. Advanced magical practices are the equivalent of a working adult who has to solve individual problems. Hence writing advanced books becomes somewhat impossible due to them becoming sort of naval gazing works of narcism if compiled and arranged for broad public consumption. Being creative leaves you on your own and that is something most people can't stomach.
Folks are out for fortune and fame, quality isn't needed when everyone wants the next best thing while devaluing each other. Magick loses its luster ya know?
my biggest problems with AI has been that it can´t count to five (fingers, toes). also likes to add body horror and multiple sexual organs on characters, just because. also doesn´t understand simple terms like jumping rope, girl on top (uhh), basically anything with multiple words (it´s like a small child). on a positive, very good for creating animal totems, or anything that has to do with shapeshifting, because it loves to merge stuff. i would never use it for writing though, it has no concept of right or wrong, no concept of magic, nothing.. just randomization, according to set parameters. for art it kind of works because you can ignore the madness and simply choose the best takes.. better than torturing some aspiring artist!
We have 2 local occult shops. One is very new age and the books are all utter crap, and lots of these crappy books ("How to talk to fairies"-with a picture of tinkerbell on the cover etc). And the other has very few books, but they are all classics like the Lesser Key etc. Its bleak.

Tact is just a nice western word to not say LYING.
Love the Foolish Fish and love Da'at Darling 🖤
Publishing in general is declining.
Been taken over by feminists, whose books are read by no one.
I read old based books.

Great conversation. The time flew by.

Amusing to hear you both keep saying, "It's really quite sad" 😂
For those wondering about good intermediate books, Sara Mastros' "the Sorcery of Solomon" is great! Highly recommended!!
I wish I had a mentor when I started out back in 1989. Darling, your spiritual path has grown so beautifully over the years 💟!
This was a good episode!

The problem is that true attainment is experiential, not explanatory. Finger pointing at the moon and all that…
