  • See huge reciprocating steam engines run. Hear about the beginnings of wireless communication, and learn about the genius behind it all. The New England Wireless and Steam Museum in East Greenwich RI presents this video, made by our volunteers, in lieu of our 56th annual Steam Up event. There is no comparison to seeing these incredible pieces of technology in person, but we hope this video brings you close to it all.

I just donated. The Steam Up is one of several annual events that I try to go to every year. A couple of years ago a guy brought a Stanley Steamer, that would make a great museum piece. I love the museum and we are so lucky to have it in New England. I do wish that you had a large condensing turbine on display with the rotor exposed. It would be neat to have a building with turbine stuff that explained power generation and the electrical grid, just an idea.

Thank you very much! We do know the Stanly Steamer you mean and it's always great to have him here. Your idea on the turbine is excellent as well and something we would love to incorporate into the exhibit.

So, go back into the wireless shop and have someone tell you what “coded message” the 55 gallon barrel is tapping out! Wonderful video. Thanks.

This is brilliant and maybe more informative than the Steamup in person - we get to see and hear about the mechanisms close-up. Wonderful and thank you! Watched the whole thing of course! And we've loved coming to the Steamup in past years and hope to do it again!

Glad to hear it, and thanks for watching! There's always a fine line between lots of great info and not enough visual. With everything being packed in so tight we were hoping this close-up would have good value, and I'm glad to hear we achieved that!

At 20:20 you were wondering how much surface area there is for tubes in that wood fired vertical boiler made in 1966...
If each tube is 2 inches diameter and 7ft long, that gives you 3.66 sq ft of heat transfer atea per tube. With 205 tubes in that boiler, you get about 750 sq ft, total surface area for all tubes in that boiler.
Hopefully that gives decent heat exchange space, for efficiency.
The automatic Columbia boiler 22:00 is undoubtedly easier/better to run unattended, and probably just as efficient, providing enough steam (15hp) to power most any steam engine on site (since they are not under much load) as long as you don't try to run too many engines at the same time.
I wonder how much surface area there is for that automatic boiler?

really could've LEFT the music out and the original audio intact without any of the trash music for those *WHO* want to hear these old gems and not some modern rock trash.
