  • A short football documentary about the game between England and Hungary which would end 6-3 in favour of the Hungarians. The Golden team of Hungary in the early 1950s was dominant, but England had never lost to a continental European side at home. Well in the end the Hungarians showed England they were no longer a real force on the world stage and that they were far behind tactically and technically.

Excellent......I listened on the radio to this game, and my jaw, along with millions of other English jaws, sagged as this game went on...English football almost went into mourning as the Hungarian goals hammered into the English net. It would take 13 years but England came back!

1-2-5-3..etc is the English way of numbering. Pulling beck the center half between the 2 fullbacks. Hungarians accorded their shirt numbers to Herbert Chapmans WM system, and some British got confused already becouse they thought Bozsik is centerhalf and wondering at the opponent half, or falsely refer to him as Lóránt (who was the actual centerhalf).
With Hidegkútis droping deep is just half way to understand what happend. Zakariás (6) was also dropped back, creating a back 4. Yes, it was a time of manmarking, but also the early years of zone defence. The back 3 usually repossisioned themself according to where was the ball. If the left outside had it, the left deffender move toward the center, if the ball was right outside the right defender moved inside. This led to a situation were the outside wingers could move towards the center of the pitch because no one was withholding them. By creating a back 4 and dropping deep, Hungarian defenders not just outnumbered the English strikers but nailed the outside forwards to the sideline, denying passing opportunities.
The idea of 4-2-4 was predate the Magic Magyars by years. It first came up in a book writen by Holits Ödön and Mamusich Mihály: How to play football? (Hogyan futballozzunk?). The vision was to creat passing opportunities and chances of combination, by creating 2 wings of attack, instead of the rigid 1-on-1 situations of the new WM system. How ever it still took years to Hungarian football to develop this way in the pitch. When MTK (Red Flag at the time) sold Höfling Norbert (a powerful center forward) to Lazio, Bukovi Márton, manager of MTK had run out of classical number nines. Hidegkúti was a very talented player but he was nothing like Höfling, Bukovi decided to move Hidegkúti to attacking midfield, and put forward his 2 inside forwards. Later on they realized, that in practice, there's no need to have 3 players in midfield so Zakariás had start to drop much deeper. Sebes Gusztáv, and Titkos Pál (also MTK men) adopted the new line-up for the National team.

As I understand it the Hungarians had fotball shoes made of kangaroo leather, while the English wore heavy boots military style.

How about the return match in May the following year in Budapest? Hungary won 7 - 1. Hadn't they learned anything? By the way, in 1957 Norway beat Hungary 2 - 1 in Oslo. I was there.

The Hungarians were good but not good enough to win a world cup when they should have done. Same with the Dutch in 1974. You need bottle as well as skill/talent to go all the way in a tournament.
