  • In Chapter One of this series we looked at how I made a mad dash across England, to rescue an Amiga 4000, possibly boiling in its own battery juices. In this chapter, we look at the physical state of the machine, and what is required to get it back to its previous glory.

Interesting to see how retrobrightin' work on this one! I too have A4000/040, with some yellowing, so maybe will try this brightening process on it someday. One thing which I missed, how did you do with this little aluminum badge (4000/040)? I don't think it would survive in chemical? And also, will yellowing come back in some years?

I covered the badge with sellotape, clear packing tape. Its the only protection I have to hand. My thinking is, by stopping fresh water with peroxide washing over it, it will stop the bleaching process. You can also remove the badge by heating it, and prying it off. But this can bend it, unless you are VERY careful. So I follow this approach instead.
Yellowing in the future, yes, it may do. I beleive the two main factors are heat and light, and light is mainly a factor, because it causes heat.

Newer disk dives are slimer. So you can mount two of them in an A4000.

Wouldn't that mean they would not match up with the bays mount holes? No worries though, as I have a Gotek to go in the 2nd back. Problem was, when it was first supplied, it was delivered in an A2000 compatible case (I did spec it to be for an A4000) I have the replacement case for it, now, but I have to transplant the innards, which wont be easy as its hot glued ONTO plastic. Tricky....

I don't know about the mounting holes but if you google images of an A4000 you can find occasionally a photo where two disk drives are fitted on top of each other...

@@gerrymangione Lets see if I can get this Gotek in there AND keep a physical drive, that seems like a good mix to me.

For sure it would be nice to have both! A slim line disk drive and a standard Gotek would fit i guess...
