@HollyFurtick thank YOU, SO much. My long distance childhood bff & I went through BMB in the summer of 2020. Your delivery, examples & encouragement paved the way to help me over that next hurdle in marriage, me.
For years I had been STRUGGLING to do better, be better, find a way to make my husband better, PLEADING with God to "PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make life in our home better!" You know all the things I tried, I'm sure you've heard them before if you hadn't tried them yourself, and I couldn't seem to get any ground covered. We'd ALMOST be better, there'd be moments or a few weeks where my husband and I would seem to connect but then something would set us off & back to the starting line we'd slip. After adding Becoming Mrs. Betterhalf into my mini library of marriage how-tos (trust I have one!), something in ME changed. My perspective was different. I finally became brave enough to open my hands & say (to quote a wise woman😉) if "I change me, I change us."
The summer of 2020 my husband & I were BARELY speaking, to say the least. Somewhere between BMB & my 40th b-day that year I chose to finally face my fears of myself & start EMDR therapy, something I'd seen help change & heal my 3 closest friends over the course of a decade but was just too scared to try, afraid of what I'd find. I figured if we were still married when I finished, GREAT! If not, I'd be heartbroken but hopefully I'd at least be living as a more authentic/healthy version of myself, in my own skin. 1.5 years later I'm still in the game, facing myself, changing me, & it's DEFINITELY changing us. By applying the techniques learned in your study I find my level of resentment over chores or time together has DEFINITELY decreased, though I still have my moments; my tendency to manipulate has overwhelmingly decreased (THANK YOU JESUS!) & I can see more clearly when I'm back sliding into manipulative thought patterns/actions; my willingness to support & positively encourage my husband has increased SIGNIFICANTLY. Our marriage feels rather stable compared to the versions we knew in the past. I've noticed an increased level of communication, we're better able to navigate emotionally intense subjects (especially when I let it set over night to see if I REALLY was bothered enough that I need to address it...usually I don't). There's an increase in affection & our emotional intimacy is growing again instead of withering away. THAT feels amazing!💝
Thank you for now offering BMB as a study we can purchase & share with our small groups & friends. It's been the icing on the stack of marriage education for me & I'm excited to do it again & share it with my people! Also, THANK YOU for following Jesus & encouraging your husband. You've both impacted my life & the lives of individuals connected to me in a positive way, winning hearts for Jesus, changing entire bloodlines for generations to come. What you do together every week truly makes a difference. Thank you for being brave enough to let God use you.

I love this. When are you doing Mrs. Better Half again?
When will you do Becoming Mrs Betterhalf again? I need it! I did good last year until about half way through when we had to move my ailing in-laws in unexpectedly mid March. Things went downhill from there. The enemy had to throw a distraction and boy did he. My MIL passed away and my FIL is on his own again but our Maria gets has NOT recovered at all. This study was a gem to me. Looking forward to another opportunity.

Beautifully put Holly. So many times we try to find external excuse for our strained relationships and project a lot onto our partners. It feels good, it shifts responsibility off us and gives us this sense of superiority... however, we are left feeling empty, bitter, sometimes resentful, and dismayed in our marriage. I've only been married for 3 years now to my current husband.. and 4 years to my ex husband.--I wish that I could have learned these lessons back then, because if I am being truly honest with myself, there were times I could have done things differently and avoided some of the hurt I went through. Perhaps it could have changed things, perhaps not. Either way, this lesson is applicable in any stage of a marriage. Lessening expectations of others and working on yourself is a much better motivator than constant nagging or frustration because things aren't done on your timeline. ---either with housework or bigger things.
Right now, its working my expectations on life goals. I had a whole plan set up for my husband and I before covid hit, but that all got upended when we hit patches of uncertainty with his work and my work. I've always been a micromanager and always love to have stuff well structured because at the time it helped me keep my anxiety in check. I didn't really trust anyone but my plans. (boy did that change.) My whole life got a reset. I had to learn to embrace the uncertainty and realize God will do what He wants to do, regardless of my plans. If that means my plans get upended for a season, well then they do and I have to trust in what God has planned.
2020 wasn't easy for me.. but its allowed me to deepen my trust in God and also in my husband. I never let another person in like I have with him (even with my first husband). Before when I would struggle with panic attacks, I would push everyone away. I was scared that if people saw me like that, they would disappear or chide me for some irrational reason. Now, I don't want my husband to leave my side if I struggle with one. This whole time has been a lot of me realigning my sights on God, and also recognizing my husband's role in my life. Allowing him to move into that role has alleviated a lot of stress from my shoulders. I am no longer seeing him as some immature child I need to correct, or someone I need to compete with. I am beginning to see him as my partner, my lover, my best friend and my leader. Allowing myself to step back has been a greater blessing to me than anything.
Younger me would have kneejerked at the thought of "roles" but as I get older, man.. having a man around, a godly man, who was inspired to deepen his walk by my own obedience and faithfulness and continues to do so on his own because he's connected with the right group of guys.. well, wow. Its the best thing ever. Its amazing to watch him grow into his role.
