This is from a lifelong Noles fan, but he got a Saban type extension without the resume to earn it. Without Jordan Travis he is well below .500 and would be unemployed without the 2023 season...
It’s tough to say that, in Dec 2023, he had won two conf titles (Memphis and FSU) and was on a 19 game win streak. Very few teams have won 19 straight. The flaws were hidden
@richardbrookins5406 he was never going to Bama. HIs agent, who is the agent for almost every top college coach said he was. FSU did not want him to go, so they gave him an offer he did not earn or deserve.
Kept the kids gloves on with this “Truth” “He became a head coach of a major program at the start of Transfer portal” …. So just like almost every other current head coach? 💀
The truth about Mike Norvell... Dead (rich) man walking in 2026, at this point there's no argument against 2023 being the exception to the rule under his watch - though CFB is a more exciting world when Florida State is a powerhouse, I hope they can rise again
As long as he doesn’t keep riding off the past like Dabo does with 2016. Get fired, do TV for a bit, and either go back to coaching or stay in the media. He’s a good dude no hate on either
The problem is where teams like Miami built their foundation on Miami guys coming out of high school. Guys, who bleed the U. Then they piece together any weak spots on the roster with elite transfer guys. So now what you have is ELITE guys under development with experience transfer players above them, teaching them. And now it’s positioned so perfectly that the guys that are under development have a little bit of experience as well and you have really good depth and almost no drop off of talent. So you create no weak spots on your team therefore, if you lose a position, you just replace it with the next guy up.
Your comment is almost funny in this day and age but I know you didn't mean it to be. Thats exactly how you are supposed to build a team. Thats how Bowden and Jimbo built teams. Thats how Cignetti built Indiana which is why they won it all. However, its not sustainable nowadays because you can't make these kids stay long enough anymore. When the kids who bought in at Indiana leave you'll see it crumble. Miami might have one more year of a "built" team but those will start to leave as well for more cash. No teams in CFB are immune from this and having a base or foundation is unfortunately a thing of the past.
I can confidently say, I saw the collapse coming. I saw the over reliance on the portal sneaking up on them, I saw the flash in the pan year in 2023 as a product of having a weaker schedule, and I saw the writing on the wall when the media tried to justify putting FSU top 10 out of the gate despite a lackluster portal class. Did I think 2-10 would happen, no, but I did predict them to miss out on bowl season. But I’m just happy the worst case scenario turned out true, you just love to see it.
As an FSU fan, I think our indecision during the year last year as far as do we keep him or not will hurt us long term, some really good coaches became available last year and other teams picked them up, mostly conference and in state rivals.
Florida State being geographically located where they are and considering they have access to the best high school players in both Georgia and Florida and to have a recruiting class any lower than top 7 each year is inexcusable.
Right on Josh. And Mike CAN coach... he's done it at other places, and has done it at FSU. But it's too late to "build" now, sadly enough, for Mike... odds are really against him now to say the least... we're expecting Top 10 ranking with an ENTIRELY new team... tough for anyone.
Florida fan here. I knew they were taking a big step back after 13-1 when they struggled against our 3rd string QB. Admittedly not a 2-10 bad, but I knew it wasn't going to be as good as the National guys projected. Been telling my FSU alum friend since then the Portal method was doomed. I'm interested if Kiffin remains heavy portal at LSU.
They’re hoping he can find another QB and a situation like 2023 but I don’t think that will happen any time soon. My top pick for a cfb27 rebuild right now
I don’t think it was his over use of the portal that has done him in. It’s his lack of developing young players. I can’t think of one guy Norvell recruited out of high school that has been 1st round draft pick.
Our dc cane out yesterday and said alot of the bad of last year was because of kids who are gone now and this season will be different. Im a huge nole fan but ill believe it when i see it. I love my noles but this year better be different. But who thinks it will be?
You can have the best intentions and try your best and still fail. I truly believe he has the best intentions and tried his best but if what you are doing doesn't work then best intentions and trying your best doesn't matter. As a FSU fan I like Mike but he's not a good head coach. He can't recruit, he's not good at cultivating talents and even when he was calling plays he would make some completely dumb decisions like going for it on 4th down on the FSU own 30 yard line against Notre Dame in the 3rd quarter when we was only down by one score( Spoiler alert it didn't work and we lost). Jordan Travis made him look good and once he was gone Mike had nothing to hide behind.
Well as someone who like him and defended him for awhile…. This is the year and with a tough schedule. Thing is if he gets 8-9 wins they won’t fire him and I think I’d be ok with it. If he loses SMU game I think they will be looking for the next coach.
Norvell's a bad fit for FSU. Recruiting is the lifeblood of a top program, and he can't do it in one of the most recruiting-rich states in the country. The top recruits don't want to play for him. He got lucky with Jordan Travis and took advantage of the Transfer Portal before the top teams got heavily involved. At this point, I hope and pray he has a good season, is offered by another team, and leaves, so FSU can get out from under his huge buyout.
The one thing I think people keep getting wrong is that I wouldn’t say that Norvell didn’t prioritize HS recruiting. I’d say he never fully grasped the game of recruiting elite players to a place like Florida State. It’s one thing to get a kid with a chip on his shoulder because he was under recruited to come to Memphis to play hard for you. Having to fight off Georgia LSU ND Ohio State, Florida and Miami for kids is not even the same sport and I don’t think he ever understood what it takes.
Talent is talent it doesnt matter where you get it from. Whats landing mike in the situation hes in now has been poor evaluations and bad-average coaching staff. The crazy part is I really like the young talent and coaching staff they have in place now but it might be too late.
As a Miami fan there are two things I miss from the 90s… Miami being absolutely dominant on both sides of the ball in the same season… and beating GOOD FSU teams. Strange as it might be, those are the good ole days, when the winner of the MiamI vs FSU game essentially decided who one of the two teams in the national title game would be.
As an Ohio State fan that said this about Michigan until 2021…no you don’t God punished Michigan for 7 long years before he decided they needed to be punished an additional 8 straight And how did I thank thy lord? By spitting in his face… “I wish Michigan was good again” “The game is getting boring” “Michigan should win one just to make it more interesting” After 4 straight years of agonizing losses, I’ve learned to appreciate the lords gifts Amen 🙏
You could say the same thing about Miami though for the seven years that Jimbo beat Miami and the years Norvel beat Miami they were beating really bad Miami teams
MN problem he thought he could build thru portal and found out you can’t. Now think he is starting to go back to building thru high school but it just started this past recruiting class
Comparing FSU to South Carolina is crazy. I love how you talk about how good of a guy Norvell is and then call out our fanbase because we'd scoff at being compared to SC... It's his fault we're being compared with them in the first place
So are we now getting to the point where having an established culture truly matters to remain competitive? Seems to me schools that have one and build around it outperform strictly relying on portal. Hindsight obviously is 20/20, but just cool to see that this reliance on portal to build a team might start settling down. Excluding Indiana cuz they pulled off a fantastic portal based season…..
2:09 Those classes... that's actually Top 25... which was supposed to mean something, so maybe do a Top 20, or 15 instead? I get your point on it being good enough if you only want to go to a bowl, which is easier today than it has ever been, and it's sad that the system and greed has cheapened that accomplishment. Sending strays to South Carolina, Pate!! Tell us how you really feel. If FSU fans really feel that way about teams like SC, then maybe hangout in the ACC basement a bit longer until you can appreciate winning football. So many of these fan bases can use some humbling, especially the ones who forgot or never experienced a team's mediocrity before getting good. I like Norvel as a person and had he hit big in 2023, this is a whole different convo. Jordan Travis injury was devastating. They had pros on that team and the fallout has spanned the previous 2 years. Yikes! I like his attitude and temperament but some of the coaching decisions have burned him.
Lack of Identifying, Signing, and Developing talent consistently from HS. Anybody following the program and I mean REALLY FOLLOWING the program knows it is not a money issue for 99% of the recruiting short comings under norvell.
He leaned on the portal at the new age of the sport? How about getting hired at the beginning of Covid and being 2 years behind recruiting due to not being able to take visits. Portal was relied on out of necessity.
First three years: 18-16 Next three years: 20-18 He may just be mediocre, with consistent 2-year cycles of progressing and then regressing to the mean.
Winning is a skill. FSU failed themselves by not selecting a proven winner as their head coach. The last two hires have been awful gimmick hires based on goofy spread offense numbers. Well guess what? Running the ball wins games. Defense wins games. Tight ends win games. Recruiting wins games!! The Noles must get back to the meat and potatoes!
@IAMCAMO904 Writing as a Seminole Booster and The Battle's End contributor, we don't have the same kind of eff-you money Miami has where they can buy players, like the QB from Duke. FSU just finished a football only facility (that Jimbo bitched about us not having when he bolted for A&M) plus stadium renovations. Tack onto that we were 13-0 when rumors were Alabama wanted Mike, so Alford opened the check book, and now we're between a rock and hard place with two losing seasons. I hope Mike can turn it around as I do like him, but his job - at minimum - is win the ACC. Anything less is a bust. If this season is in the crapper again, he has to be shown the door.
Yeah I agree and I don't blame y'all for not paying better to have kids that really want to play. But it's also important to get the kids on the field that's worked their asses off when people left and you keep them off the field in favor of portal guys that's a slap in a face to kids who put in work.
Recruiting is one thing, but development has been terrible. Since 23, every team has regressed. The difference between 23 and the seasons after, the 23 team held each other accountable and demanded more from each other. The other major difference, the Dillingham influence was gone after 23. I know he wasn't there then, but his work effort lingered with at least part of that team. Dilly ha done great at ASU while Mike has looked like a lost mid at best.
The interesting thing is if you fire Mike halfway through the season, stick an interim coach in to finish the season out after the massive coaching hires that were done by all of the coaching programs last season can somebody tell me what major coach is truly still out there for Fsu to hire? I don’t see one unless you go to the NFL and that is a dicey scenario.
Lot of new faces taking on head coaching roles at G5 teams and coordinator positions at the P4 Whichever one of them succeeds after this season is probably where you start looking
Both GT and ASU head coaches just signed 5 year contract extensions. Doesn’t mean they can’t be broken but FSU cannot afford to fire Mike and then absorb the contracts from the other schools. This is the issue I’m talking about. Most power 5 programs locked down their coaches.
Pate doesn't even know that norvell has had outta all those classes less than 10 guys start from his high school ranks and like only one of those guys started and then made it to league
Yes and no: not everyone will get to have a well-developed, mature roster like Indiana had. Lightning-in-a-bottle situations are one thing, but recruiting well is the historical way.
Lol everyone that actually kept up with FSU knew the 2023 season was a fluke and they were riding a bunch of 6th year transfers to some success. The only people who ignored it were blind FSU fans, box score watchers, and media who were trying to talk themselves into FSU being good because it's exciting when big-name programs are good again. Kirk Herbstreit, arguably the biggest talking head in college football, said the next year that FSU was the preseason top 10 team most likely to finish unranked (which they did), so obviously plenty of people were calling it in the moment. Pate's just trying to be nice to a guy who's totally in over his head and about to be fired.
"The snub" as you call it, has zero to do with recruiting. It's just as likely that the reaction of the fans to that has a lot more to do with whether young athletes wanna come play for this team. That and as mentioned above, there was a ton of money put into upgrading facilities and the extension that head coach got. Instead of looking who to blame, it should be about what needs to be done to turn it around and not expectations of it happening in just one year.
So in other words he's gonna be fired. He'll leave with a ton of money that They paid him for almost making the playoff. FSU has dug themselves a hole A&M got out of but they paid for it. FSU please pay and get out of your hole so my gators have a competitive game at the end of the year. Thank you
I did know they were one and done and said as much before ‘24 season started. Under 9.5, Miami a pickem, UF +11.5, and GT +10.5 all in the summer. That roster was ass and it was clear as day to anyone paying attention
If they beat a lifeless, coachless UF at the end of last season, they go to a bowl game. What did FSU do? Fold. Folded like a cheap suit. The players don't like their coach...

Remember 10-1 against South Carolina love the show brother!!! Also I ask any South Carolina fan who Greg Reid is 💪💪💪💪
Mike should write a check to Jordan Travis because thats who earned that contract extension.
Totally not the entire team and staff he put together, but solely J Travs doing. Thats such a stupid statement.
“Those recruiting classes are plenty good enough to make a bowl game every year”
*Norvell has only made 2 bowl games*
They are good enough to win it all. Clemson Michigan Indiana and more have proven this
@SurferRCwho’s good enough to win it all??? Please don’t say FSU the way they’ve been recruiting and developing
@954mrhollywoodsmu louisville pitt gt uva to name a few
@SurferRCIndiana had way better talented transfers across the board
@Greatv8dernot by their portal class rankings
This is from a lifelong Noles fan, but he got a Saban type extension without the resume to earn it. Without Jordan Travis he is well below .500 and would be unemployed without the 2023 season...
He would be unemployed without that expensive contract extension. Should not have given him that even if he bolted to Bama.
He didn’t even get Jordan Travis to fsu.taggart did , Norvell is outdoing him in suck.let that sink in
It’s tough to say that, in Dec 2023, he had won two conf titles (Memphis and FSU) and was on a 19 game win streak. Very few teams have won 19 straight. The flaws were hidden
@richardbrookins5406 he was never going to Bama. HIs agent, who is the agent for almost every top college coach said he was. FSU did not want him to go, so they gave him an offer he did not earn or deserve.
But who is going to replace him? He had more hype than Cignetti and similar hype to Kirby Smart. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out.
Kicking the can down the road with this guy
Kept the kids gloves on with this “Truth”
“He became a head coach of a major program at the start of Transfer portal”
…. So just like almost every other current head coach? 💀
@dragonsurge1 that's nothing new, Josh always avoids criticizing coaches harshly
Not recruiting the state of Florida better is unforgivable. USF did as good of a job recruiting the state.
The truth about Mike Norvell... Dead (rich) man walking in 2026, at this point there's no argument against 2023 being the exception to the rule under his watch - though CFB is a more exciting world when Florida State is a powerhouse, I hope they can rise again

Why zero discussion on player development, hiring coaches or game management?
Because none of that exists at FSU.
I can confidently say, I saw the collapse coming.

Under the 6.5. I see 5 likely wins and maybe, just maybe, they accidentally fall into a 6th win. That’s the ceiling for my beloved Noles.
Five likely wins being New Mexico State, Central Arkansas, Virginia, BC, and Florida
I agree on the Under, but I’ll raise you 5.5.
Trap Games with either Virgina or Florida.
@TheKilopooyall not beating Florida
In the NIL era recruiting location means next to nothing. Kids are going to go where they can play and maximize their NIL potential.
They are just waiting for the buyout number to get manageable
Right on Josh. And Mike CAN coach... he's done it at other places, and has done it at FSU. But it's too late to "build" now, sadly enough, for Mike... odds are really against him now to say the least... we're expecting Top 10 ranking with an ENTIRELY new team... tough for anyone.

This upsets me so much to watch…. But I agree with everything Pate said
Our dc cane out yesterday and said alot of the bad of last year was because of kids who are gone now and this season will be different. Im a huge nole fan but ill believe it when i see it. I love my noles but this year better be different. But who thinks it will be?
I think he would be a good coach in a different era. These kids different and gotta have $$
Every team uses the portal just as much or more than FSU, we just have missed on the last 2 QBs . That’s the difference to me
You can have the best intentions and try your best and still fail. I truly believe he has the best intentions and tried his best but if what you are doing doesn't work then best intentions and trying your best doesn't matter. I love Norvell. He needs four more years at least
That thumbnail lol
Well as someone who like him and defended him for awhile…. This is the year and with a tough schedule. Thing is if he gets 8-9 wins they won’t fire him and I think I’d be ok with it. If he loses SMU game I think they will be looking for the next coach.

Damn you just called us South Carolina
We did Pate… we saw the EXACT same thing happen to Mich St
As a gator fan I feel horrible for the noles
For what it’s worth, Norvell had success in the portal for more than one season.
Will FSU pay the buyout that is the major question
As a Miami fan there are two things I miss from the 90s… Miami being absolutely dominant on both sides of the ball in the same season… and beating GOOD FSU teams. Strange as it might be, those are the good ole days, when the winner of the MiamI vs FSU game essentially decided who one of the two teams in the national title game would be.
As an Ohio State fan that said this about Michigan until 2021…no you don’t
God punished Michigan for 7 long years before he decided they needed to be punished an additional 8 straight
And how did I thank thy lord?
By spitting in his face…
“I wish Michigan was good again”
“The game is getting boring”
“Michigan should win one just to make it more interesting”
After 4 straight years of agonizing losses, I’ve learned to appreciate the lords gifts
Amen 🙏
Other fans seen it. Wtf they wasn’t recruiting nor developing
@dragonsurge1Michigan is still boring carried by Defense
You could say the same thing about Miami though for the seven years that Jimbo beat Miami and the years Norvel beat Miami they were beating really bad Miami teams
Calm down lil bro it was a couple years ago when we were spankin miami every year. How yall have forgotten...
Just have to survive two more years of MN.
MN problem he thought he could build thru portal and found out you can’t. Now think he is starting to go back to building thru high school but it just started this past recruiting class
Screw it. Bring back Jimbo. It can get worse, but I’m not sure how. 😂
Bottom line, he needs to win this year, at least 7
10 games.
Untrue. They will keep him regardless. If they were going to fire him anytime soon, it would have been last year.
He better win 10 or he gone but he won’t
Gotta have $$$$ to recruit. Mike is getting about 13 million compared to the 30 million dollar team
Money isn’t the problem for every kid. The ones we do sign rarely develop and you don’t need money to do that.
Money isn't the issue at FSU.
His first recruiting cycle also began at the start of covid lockdowns. That didn’t help.
Did he lean on the portal anymore than Cig?
Comparing FSU to South Carolina is crazy. I love how you talk about how good of a guy Norvell is and then call out our fanbase because we'd scoff at being compared to SC... It's his fault we're being compared with them in the first place

Gator fans looooove Mike Norvell
South Carolina has never completed in the SEC they're the Kentucky of the SEC
2:09 Those classes... that's actually Top 25... which was supposed to mean something, so maybe do a Top 20, or 15 instead?

He leaned on the portal at the new age of the sport? How about getting hired at the beginning of Covid and being 2 years behind recruiting due to not being able to take visits. Portal was relied on out of necessity.

Pate doesn't even know that norvell has had outta all those classes less than 10 guys start from his high school ranks and like only one of those guys started and then made it to league
Fire MN!
Norvell inherited a disaster. The previous coaching carousel when Jimbo crashed cratered the program. Norvell had nothing to work with.
CANES rule the State of FL
Recruiting rankings lol. Dont tell Indiana about recruiting rankings. Yall put wayyyy to much stock in these rankings.
Yes and no: not everyone will get to have a well-developed, mature roster like Indiana had. Lightning-in-a-bottle situations are one thing, but recruiting well is the historical way.
We definitely not no South Carolina. I’ll say Nebraska
Prime to FSU
Marion CU head coach
Everyone knows who Norvell is now though😊
They went 10-3 before going 13-1, anybody saying they saw it coming is full of crap lol.
Talk about how the snub affected recruiting and everything else. Tell the entire truth.
Norvell never showed any sign that he was going to recruit at a high level despite the “snub”.
@matthewmorin3567he is a top 20 recruiter in the known universe though…
Mike didn't recruit high school at a high level before or after the Snub.
Oh lord stop with the snub. You sound ridiculous
🥱
So in other words he's gonna be fired.
He'll leave with a ton of money that They paid him for almost making the playoff.
FSU has dug themselves a hole A&M got out of but they paid for it. FSU please pay and get out of your hole so my gators have a competitive game at the end of the year. Thank you
Ummmmm clemson relied on solely recruiting classes and look where they're now? 😂 Still in better shape than FSU but not that much better
Top ten class or bust
A complete disgrace what this man has done to FSU!
What a time to be alive! FSU is now South Carolina. 😂 Go Canes! 🙌
Guess I gotta hate watch ts
We won't miss him. Fire Alford as well.
South zcarolina has never won a conference title. Im disappointed with Norvel but gtfoh😅😅
This bum need to go asap
Mike Norvell is a bad coach that had a really good QB for 2 years. Norvell owes Travis like half of his buyout when he gets fired lol
Mike Norvell can't put two sentences together. He is not a nice guy.
I feel like we are all killing time until they rehire Jimbo Fisher
Diabolical take!
Lol he aint wanted or coming back
As a Miami fan, I hope the FSU administration gives Norvell another Extension.
I don’t understand the situation at fsu. They act like beating Alabama week 1 saves their season
Hey dickweed, nobody thinks that, but we still beat their ass and it’s a great win for the brand.
I did know they were one and done and said as much before ‘24 season started. Under 9.5, Miami a pickem, UF +11.5, and GT +10.5 all in the summer. That roster was ass and it was clear as day to anyone paying attention
All I’m hearing are a bunch of excuses
Trash take on a trash show from a trash host
If they beat a lifeless, coachless UF at the end of last season, they go to a bowl game. What did FSU do? Fold. Folded like a cheap suit. The players don't like their coach...
mario effect… canes run the state….norvell can’t compete on the the trail…
Relax they had one good season
Good grief this dude thinks he’s the commissioner. I’m sure you know exactly the truth about Mike at FSU 🥱🙄
