Anthony thanks for differentiating community care taking vs punitive towing. In another video you also differentiated community care taking vs towing the car because you want to circumvent the 4th amendment with an "inventory" search of the vehicle that is now subject to tow. This is one of the only LEO training channels that really teaches just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

If someone was found dead on the side of the road can the police tow this person's van without talking with the family. And if it is towed where do they pull it to in Detroit Michigan?

Our policy is clear. ALL prisoner's or suspect's vehicles will be towed and inventoried after arrest, for whatever type of arrest. The only time a vehicle is not towed is if the vehicle was not involved in a crime/offense and is left with a licensed driver of the suspect/prisoner's choosing. We cannot leave a vehicle on private property unless it just happens to be the violator's residence and the vehicle was not used in a crime. With all that being said, we wouldn't tow a vehicle like stated in your video just out of spite. If unoccupied, on private property, and not directly involved in a crime, that's the vehicle owner or driver's own liability.

So if you arrest a shoplifter held by loss prevention and their car is in the parking lot but not used in the offense other than getting them to Walmart what do you do? Here we cannot tow off private property if the vehicle was simply used to get them there and is not part of it. Obvious exception may be if it was a robbery and there may me evidentiary value in the car like a mask etc.
