India is the one of the region where human started to live from centuries and has the oldest religion of the world. But for your concerns India population ratio right now is 2.2 that is a declining number.
This is a good overview, but India played both sides if it was in her national interest. A good example is allowing the CIA to operate out of India supporting the Tibetan resistance fighters inside Chinese controlled areas until 1971. In exchange, India got US intelligence about what happened near the Indian border. The CIA operated at the same time out of Pakistan spying against the Soviets. Signing a treaty with the Soviets while drinking tea with CIA agents was the real 1969 style India.
Then USA tried to stop India's nuclear program, we all know how great of a friend US is.

The initial IIT's of India were set up with USSR & USA support. India on the whole had a good working relationship with both.
Until Nixon & Kissinger ie.
Kissinger flew into China over the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, somewhere 1970-71.
As more than a million refugees flowed into India, due to the Genocide like activities of the Pakistani Army against East Pakistan then (Bangladesh now), India was forced to confront the "Crimes Against Humanity" so to speak.
The defender of Human Rights, the US then decided to move the VII th Fleet, to force India out.
This single act, of the USA is till date not forgotten in India. Their focus on Self-Interest above all.
It will not be forgotten at least in my Family, I have Bangladeshi roots both sides, Dad & Maternal Uncle fought in all the Wars of 1962, 65 & 71. Dad & Uncle were commissioned in 1957. Dad in the Air Force, Uncle in the Gurkha's (Army). He died in the war of 62.
Also, I think Nixon & Kissinger will not be remembered in History. So will Churchill.(responsible of killing 1mn Indians by diverting rice from Bengal, in 1943, creating a famine).

Russian leaders today must be grateful for the far-sighted wisdom of the Soviet leaders in supporting India fully and making it an ally rather than an enemy, can't say the same for the USA tho. I find US foreign policy just like the US, completely capitalistic, just focused on short-term benefits while ignoring long-term disadvantages.
It can seen even today when India wants to ally with the West against China but the West wants to keep moral policing and lecturing India about democracy ranking and other BS even though India is the largest democracy in the world....

It's mostly because we still truly deeply have not even been contested. We don't really need allies anymore, literally all of them are investments in peace where we shoulder much of the cost and burden.
And investment and interdependent trade (outside of the actions of mad men) drive connection and peace- when handled well. Unfortunately in some places the incentives have been broken for hundreds of years so just the twinkle in the eye of some African polity is enough to rev up the engines of Dutch disease.

It didn't lead to a nuclear war. Neither Pakistan nor India had nukes then.
@@MrXperx no but the US task naval force had nuclear weapons loaded ships in the bay of Bengal to threaten India to back down, then a Soviet submarine task force having nukes of their own trailed the task force almost leading to a war. That's an overblown episode of that war, mentioned far too often, and without merit.
India was in an actual military alliance with the Soviet Union, signed in 1971.
Whilst Pakistan was still being sanctioned by the Americans, which were imposed in 1965, and weren't actually lifted till 1982.
Not America, just the American president, there's a difference, the president can deploy his forces wherever he wishes, but he can't act with Congress approval, the president made token actions because at the time Pakistan was helping America mend relations with China.
If America really wanted to help Pakistan, they would have started by lifting the sanctions. Not a silly show of flag, which is all it was, nothing more.

i'd like to think that indo soviet relations worked on a principle of political mutually assured destruction. on one hand india needed the ussr to keep china in check and the ussr couldn't afford the worlds largest democracy to drift towards the west and have another superpower in their pockets. this sentiment evens holds in todays time as well.
Jinnah had a clear vision to be aligned with the west before independence. So even after his death the nation continued with his guidance. This in many ways was part of the British calculus for creating Pakistan. Pakistan was a western garrison state in south asia.

Indira gandhi is an icon who united the opposition and ruling forces of India to become a nuclear power. Yes we had close relationship with USSR unless it's was china India war in which ussr supported China and stopped arms shipments to India that's where USA helped us. So what this tell us is no one is no one's friend it's geo poltics when India did something against west USSR supported it when India did something against East USA supported it . We were never the friend of ussr or USA it was just a partnership. Same as today Russia sold weapons to Pakistan and India both same as west so no one is our friend . It's time Indians should realise it as soon as better.✌️

Communism and Socialism are 2 different things.
Socialism has failed time and again in India and elsewhere and communism can never become mainstream due to extreme ethnolinguistic, religious and cultural diversity.
@@phabove7 I agree on the religious and ethnic parts, but it is not proper to say socialism failed. Because you see too much of anything fails. Pure socialism as outlined in Marxism-Leninism after decades of growth would become too stable and so stagnant and then any attempt to save the system will inevitably lead to decline and collapse as shown that how Gorbachev failed and Yeltsin failed harder with that transition to capitalism. Pure capitalism like in the early decades of industrial revolution led to terrible atrocities being committed, like slavery but institutionalized with no exceptions, no racism because everyone suffers equally just to make a family rich, which eventually became one of the causes of the famous 1848 revolts of Europe. If you can get a mix of both like how Bernie Sanders proposes or a milder version of Josip Broz Tito's ideology, then you can achieve sustainable growth with manageable levels of inequality and poverty.

I have noticed that a large number of Indians, probably even the majority, support the blatant Russian invasion of Ukraine, while the Indian government has adopted an attitude similar to that of the invasions of Hungary, Czechoslovakia or Afghanistan...
The state of Russia is not the same as the USSR of the 1970s. It's not so powerful. On the other hand, China is the new superpower. India is slowly falling into the American sphere. It also has alliances with Israel, though its stance remains pro Palestine at the UN.

Watching this on 09 July 2024, when the now Indian PM Narendra Modi is in Moscow for a 2 day visit, against all the meltdown in Western Media as they criticize the Russian aggression on Ukraine.
I think someday, another such episode will analyse, why the Indian PM made this visit, but these are some reasons;
1) The re-emergence of Chinese belligerency. (How they are involved in cartography warfare in Himalayas, S.China sea and Far East Russia.
2)The 'Information warfare' and 'interference in general elections' of the leftist in Western democracies on India, who want a strong but 'compliant' India minus the more nationalistic government of the right wing BJP. (This require mutual hedging of India and Russia, with the Russians already being demonised)
3) India's view of Russia as an alternative source of energy (conventional/nuclear) and route of trade via the North-South Transportation Corridor.
4) India's understanding that pushing Russia on global sanctions further will only make them fall into Chinese camp, which can be used by China to make critical progress in their military hardware programs, something the USA is blind to.
In short, India maintains its core interest with all the pulls and pressures.

Russia and the Soviet Union are two completely different entities.
I say this because Russia never had a friendship treaty with India nor ever did anything altruistic for India but many believe wrongly so.

There was no decimation. That is exaggeration. In fact, Chinese suffered way more heavy casualties than the Indian Army. Even to this day, the Chinese haven't released their actual casualty figures of 1962 War unlike India which released its figures in 1965. Chinese use to attack waves aka their massed infantry squad attack tactics, which resulted in heavy casualties for PLA. They won some posts in Ladakh-Aksai Chin but failed to achieve an over-all breakthrough.
They were successful in Western NEFA and reached the outskirts of Tezpur in Assam but failed in Easteen NEFA where Indian Army held them and inflicted heavy casualties on PLA in the bloody battle of Walong(October-November 1962)...

A Russian sub "chasing away the USS Enterprise" is truely an Indian fantasy, there was more power in Task Force 74 than India or the Soviet Union had in that area. But it was not there to fight it was there to observe the Soviet naval forces known to be there. Both Britain and the US employed nuclear submarines in the Task Force. Both TF74 and the Soviets peacefully left the area in early 1972 when the hostilities drew to a close.

It didn't really matter that much as Sub-Launched ICBMs had been introduced by the US in 1958. The USSR did not match this capability until 1964. Though Soviet subs were horrendously poor designs as shown in the K-19 incident.

This was also the time when all East Asian countries prospered - we had an exploding population, & an open market would have done wonders to our economy.

While there was famously agitation for independence, in WW2 India raised the largest volunteer army in history. But there was a quid pro quo, though unwritten. Independence after the war.
In 1945 Britain elected a Prime Minister who had believed in Indian independence for 20 years, Clement Attlee.
Of course the state of the economy after the war helped push it forward too, that and a landslide in Parliament.
It was inevitable and after Britain under Lloyd George reneged on the WW1 promise of making India a self internal governing Dominion, like Canada and Australia etc, overdue morally.
They did want to keep India after ww2. They realized they couldn’t after Indian navy mutiny of 1945 and ina trials. Indian soldiers wanted the British out.

Nehru was always a strong democratic socialist. He made several Public sector units that still act as engines of growth. The government invested heavily in higher education, nuclear and space. Indian independence movement itself was centered around socialism and equality. He moved forward with Mixed economy mantra, which still exists.
CPI and CPM are still strong force in Indian democracy, has a strong govt in Kerala, one of the most developed state in India.
Kerala was most developed even in 1947 due to the monarchy investing in, education , health,etc.

It’s actually unfair to use the word ‘clueless’. You should think how it was in 47’. At that time, we gained independence from an ultra capitalist Britain and our country had so much inequality in all aspects. Introducing capitalism could have created monopolies from foreign entities and decimated the local economy. In short, it could have been similar to what the east India company was doing. So, strict government oversight over all sectors particularly important ones was important as I see it. Also, many of Nehru era institutions like IITs, ISRO, BARC, PSUs and several others are still standing today, achieving tremendously. However, I digress. Indira should probably have pivoted to the west in her time as the liberalization which we did in the 90s could have been much potent if it was done in the 70s or 80s. But, sitting in 24’ in India, I can say that we have not done too bad.

I haven't watched the video but I hope you mention, when America attempted to attack India by sending nuclear warships to the bay of bengal. US wanted to kill a young democracy by protecting a Pakistani dictatorship proved why India needed the Soviet unions military help. The soviets chased the US Navy all the way from the bay of bengal to the Indian ocean and then outside it. This began Russia's long history of protecting democracy and India and Americas attempts at destabilising it.
