I usually compare HEMA to golf. You can go out and purchase a basic/bog standard set of golfing equipment and enjoy playing golf and never switch out or change gear unless something breaks, and you dont even need ALL the accessories; same with HEMA, a basic HEMA feder/sword, the basic protective gear and you are good to go; can you upgrade/buy more expensive gear, absolutely; you might like a particular look or aesthetic; or you really enjoy proving yourself at the various tournaments and the more expensive, top of the line gear, may give you a competitive edge or there is a particualr style of weapon that you want to represent (I am in process of getting a custom made feder based on the Royal Armories IX 1787 because club uses the texts of Harley, Silver and other English masters)

I have to admit, yes. The Kvetun 1570 is a WAY more advanced design, for only 20 Euros more. To me the Sigi seems on a par with the standard feders from Kvetun and Regenyei, but those are much cheaper.

Good video probably getting one of the liechtenauers they look promising. Regarding to the VB Swordshop Feder i did some research because i wondered about its weight and i found out that the original was declared a "Paratschwert" or parade sword for doing artistic pieces but not real everyday fencing. There are apparently some poems and instructions from that time that tell that you should jump around strike jump around again and so on to impress the audience .
Apparently those swords were carried by someone experienced leading the Fencing school in a parade. I remember some of the originals that were maybe used for fencing were around 1,3 kg one in the Met Museum done by Diefstetter. Would explain why it handles so powerful.

Oh man... I'm somewhat short of one year into HEMA. I recently bought my own mask as previously it always worked out to use one from the club. I'm now looking into getting a Feder or sword.
I'm wondering if I should get a Feder which does it's job but doesn't cost that much or if I should get a customized SigiKing which would allow me to make it look almost exactly like what would be my dream sword and wouldn't look off as a reenactment prop.
It's 260€ vs 560€. I guess I'll will eventually end up owning both as many other members of my club have more than one "blade" in their arsenal...
I'm indecisive if I should go all in that early on. I've handled Kings before as the more experienced members often bring in all their Feders to allow beginners to handle steel in the begginers course (consisting of solo drills and slow partner exercises). I definitely know I wouldn't regret it as I just love how it handles but I'm afraid it is a bit pretentious to buy a SigiKing as my first weapon. I also think that eventually I might be one of the "journeyman" or "not a beginner anymore"-people and I kinda want to be someone who is able to give an beginner the opportunity to hold a steel weapon without using one of the clubs plastic wasters myself.
The VB Feder im considering to get (Federsword for Torney and free fight) could be on my doorstep within less than a week as it's more of a off the shelf thing while I would wait for the SigiKing for half a year unless it will be ready faster than the estimated fulfillment time in their FAQ.
I've heard people in my club tell me to start with a Feder to get the extra finger protection of the Schilt. Another one told me he started with a Feder and got another sword later and know thinks that he should have went with that one in the first place... I'm a little bit overwhelmed and I'm juggling around the pros and cons of my options... I know it's always better to look for advice from people that actually know oneself but... I guess I'll just ask for random advice. I think random people of the same interest may give me new views and insights to add to my pros and cons...

Imho the Aureus feder is the only one I've used that I'd put in the "5th gen fighter jet" category (espcially in terms of handling) but since production times are so long and the price is quite high, I'd not recommend it as a first feder. Very curious about the 2 new Kvetun models, especially the Lichtenauer since I mostly practice from earlier sources.

Meyer notes in the 1570 treatise that longswords weren't in much "earnest" use any more and part of his purpose in writing is to preserve the art. He still considered it the foundation of sword training, but use of the longsword itself was largely restricted to sport/demonstration.

Just a thought: why don't more feders have very long fullers going down most of the length of the blade? It seems like the obvious design factor to exploit, considering the balancing act that's going into making a safe feder that also roughly represents a real sword (they basically have to try to make an object that's been optimised to kill and maim, do as little damage as possible while keeping as many of the core characteristics as possible lol)
