Multi layer graffiti stencil using Cricut Tutorial

- In this video you can learn how to create some multi layered stencils using your cricut Explore air 2 to create some awesome graffiti style artwork. Using the website stencilcreater.org as an easy accessible way to create our layers we then use the svg files to cut on the cricut. It’s an awesome website to play with and upload some family pics to create some unique art. To get that really cool graffiti effect spray paint is then used but less toxic options like paint rollers or brushes are a great alternative if you’d like to use this as a project for the kids.

It is about time someone did a straight forward video on this process. Thank you.
No worries mate. Hope it helped and keep an eye on the channel. Got some more cool stuff I'm working on now.
@@WickedPaint what is the cutting stencil machine brand ??..
@@Clos-wx1mv The machine I use is the cricut explore air 2 which is great for cutting stencils I have made.
Yes... I'm curious to buying one not sure what is a decent one not too expensive
@@Clos-wx1mv Well, I haven't tried any others but this one has lastet me 3-4 years and I use it pretty often to make stencils for spray painting or airbrushing. The software is annoying as you have to be connected to the internet for it to work but apart from that I am happy with it.
It's always the tech dads doing the most detailed videos ever. Keep it up
Thanks mate!
Thank soooooo much for this. I had no idea this program existed but plan on using it straight away. What a time saver; opens up time for creativity and to create
overspray easily eliminated my using 99 cent store magnets. Thx for the info brutha. Love this.
Thats an awesome suggestion, especially when painting on windy days! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Wow I didn’t know a page like that existed. I’m an artist and I can’t thank you enough! My Cricut is gonna smoke hahah
Coolness! 😃👍🏽
You must not be a true artist because I figured this out on my own without knowing it even exists.
Seriously, this is the best tutorial. Thank you for making it so comprehensive and to the point. 🧡
GENIUS! No wonder he chose Albert!
Thank you so much! Everyone else just kept showing the Cricut with text or expensive software. This helped a ton.
Just got a Cricut for Christmas, searching for some “how to” and found you!!! Awesome video and now I’m a new subscriber. Keep up the great work!
That is so awesome, they are so much fun and the possibilities are endless. Have fun and thanks for taking a look at my videos, I hope they help you out.
This was an extremely useful video, and superbly well executed. Thank you. I was trying to decipher your accent…it sounds like a cross between Australian English and German English. Very easy to understand.
Thanks Peter, I'm glad to hear this video was helpful. You are right it is mainly an Australian accent but I traveled a lot as a child so there might be a bit of South African, New Zealand, or American mixed in.
The beat is 🔥! Great informative video. Ty!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant best advice ever
Thank you, I'm working on another more complicated full colour stencil video at the moment for you guys.
Thumbs up for including the registration crosses on your stencil. I've seen a lot of videos where registration isn't shown or discussed.
Nice tutorial man - was curious about these cricut machines, they looks very accessible and effective.
Thanks mate! Glad you liked it. They are impressive machines considering the detail they can get as well and all the different materials. My only issue with it is the software is always updating and they don't allow you to use the machine unless your online which I think is a bit weird.
yo thats awesome man
This must be the best video I have watched to explain the process to me. MANY thanks . Im looking up Stencil Creator now :)
I'm so glad to hear that and hope you have some great success playing with the stencil creator website. It really does make the process of making stencils so much easier.
@@WickedPaint any suggestions on the kind of cricut to get? I can see a whole range and it looks overwhelming. Looking to make stencils
Well I bought my cricut explore air 2 a couple of years ago and its still going strong. I use it for cutting stencils mostly from 220gsm paper or thin mylar sheets. The only limitation is the cutting size if you want to make really large stencils and the software can be a bit annoying as they like to release updates quite often which it seems you can't avoid. I would recommend taking a look to see whats available in your area and if your lucky you can pick up a bargain!
@@WickedPaint thanks very much. I would Like to make larger stencils but I assumed the machine is limited to around 10 inches. I might go pop into office works and see what they can tell me. Many thanks for your advice.
best tutorial ever,cheers my man
Your welcome and happy painting!!
Thank you very much! I think I found my new obsession!
Thats awesome, I hope to see what awesome artwork you come up with!
@@WickedPaint Got my airbrush this week - still playing! One question, do I need to buy the Explore air 2 or will any cricut cut stencils?

Dude! You are the man!!!! Thank you for this. I've been trying to find a way around Photoshop to do just this!
No problem, hope it helps. Its a great site but I will be doing another video soon in Gimp which is a free software you can also use to make some stencils.

YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!!
more cricut tutortials like this please.... i love how its so original and unique...especially compared to the oversaturated cricut videos of the same damn thing over and over and over (ie. 10 cricut hacks you nevr knew!, applying vinyl on starbucks coffee mug, vinyl unicorn cutout, blahblah blah!) so i really appreciate your superrrrr helpful and awesome video!!!! ANDDDDD you had to go and get a albert einstien image?! saaaay what! yeah man... you rock!!!!
want to know how you can ROCK even more?!!!!..... upload a video on more information or ways to utilize cricut draw feature and working with or around the double lines... right now, i dont use it often...at all. but the few times i have.... i usually fill the double lines in with marker or paint or something. but i am pretty confident that your creative genius mind of yours can hook it upwith some good ideas and uses for cricut draw... please?!
btw- im hyped on subscribing to you.... dont let us fellow cricuter's down. pweaze?!
WOW, your wonderful comment totally just hyped me up. Thanks for making my day and being such an awesome fan supporting this little channel.
I've never thought about the draw feature before but thinking about it certainly gives me plenty of ideas. Let me have a play with it and I'll plan a really cool project for you guys.
im going to attempt free hand cutting on some flower stencils ive made! thanks for this video!! i actually have a cutter at the local library i can use, but i was to spend the time doing it my own first. :D
Thats great! Nothing beats a nice hand cut stencil and I am sure it will look awesome. Have fun and your painting.

Amazing tutorial!
Can you please make a video on what to do in case of large sized stencils?
Thank you, I have created a large stencil video using photoshop but not with this method.
@@WickedPaint This method seems easier than photoshop.
Very cool! Great video.
hi there great video
i have wondered how you stuck the paper down to the cricket cutter board as there is no adhesive on the paper
and it seams that when you put the paper on the board and pressed on it it seamed to stick
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The cricut cutting matts have adhesive on them which help the paper to stick and not move while you cut them.
@@WickedPaint thanks a lot 😀
g'day mate, great video. Ive noticed that all the backgrounds are all black, how could i adjust it to white, where it would still work, cheers
That came out amazing. Thanks to you someone on eBay is gonna sell their Cricut 👍
Thanks mate! Haha I guess my new video is only adding to more machines getting sold on Ebay. Funny thing is that is where I got mine from a few years ago now and it still runs good even after all my crazy projects.
@@WickedPaint 100% pal. Seeing that website where I can stencilise any picture, yes please. Plan to watch more of your vids as well, keep it up 👊👊
Thank you so much!
Your welcome and thanks for watching it too. I will be making some more colorful ones soon.😀
Good video. We just got a Cricut. I was thinking the stencils could be easy to make on it. Thanks for the tip on the stencil site.
Glad to hear this video helped you out. Have fun with it and hopefully you've been inspired to create some cool artwork now. You can make some really cool presents with a bit of creativity.
Very helpful thank you!
Question if I may? How do you know how many layers to have? This is all completely new to me. I'm awful at art so wanted to put some art on my walls and came across the idea of using stencils on the Internet by chance. I just want to say that this video was very well put together and cuts the bullshit and cuts to the chase. I really appreciate the video.
Thanks mate! Glad you liked the video. Thats a really good question and there is no number of perfect layers. If your a beginner then I would recommend starting with two or three to get your head around it and then increase detail as well as layers as your confidence grows. More layers doesn't always equal better artwork though so just have fun and make something your proud of.
@@WickedPaint Nice tip, will do. Just one last thing, do you know where I can get that circuit software in full? I wouldn't have minded a reasonable flat fee part they're charging a subscription and the free version locks you to 20 stencils. Cheers.
but the stencils that this site creates are ready? with bridges? Thank you :)
Man this was so helpful this opens up so much projects for me. I need to get a cricut .
Glad to hear it and can't wait to see what you come up with. The Cricut definitely helps if your really busy and don't have time to cut the stencils out by hand.
@@WickedPaint what kond oc crickut is in this video
What kind oclf cricut*
@@benklein8134 it's a explore air 2 which I got a good deal on from ebay, cuts most materials really well with impressive details. The only thing that annoys me about it is the software updates really often and you cannot use it without being connected to the internet.

Awesome! I've been watching stencil videos for 2 hours now and your video is the first one that was actually totally comprehensive! 😃 Thank you! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌🏽💕 Which model of Cricut are you using? 🤔
Thats awesome!, I'm glad to hear that my video helped you out. I'm using the cricut explore air 2 and its perfect for stencil projects like this.

Cheers Mate!
thanks man really appreciated. what is the machine?? I don't know about stencil machines
Your welcome, for the machine I use a cricut explore air 2
@@WickedPaint ow its expensive, from their website I looked at it and its 230$ dollars! am I correct?
Easiest video ive ever watched i couldnt watch the other ones with stencils too many steps involved with using photoshop.
Glad to hear it and hope it helps you create some awesome stencil work!
@@WickedPaint i started using the Circut Explore Air 2 even after watching your videos at first i didn't know how to work this machine or the software ....i kinda figured it out after i got it the other day playing around with it ...it's complicated at first but I'm on the next day with it now i understand how it works better tho. Check out my video first time using the Circut Explore Air 2 Blackout edition and I was just figuring it out still afterwards i made pretty cool stickers or stencils with it.
There’s different cricket machines, which one do you recommend for this?
They are all pretty good and I have an older model explore air 2 which has lasted me a few years and still going strong. Stencils are usually cut from mylar or thick paper so you certainly don't need a top of the range model.
Thank you! i was looking for this exact thing! and the website is super helpful as well
Awesome, hopefully it helps you create some really cool stencil art!
That came out pretty nice, what was the machine you used?
I used the Cricut Explore air 2, really useful machine and paid itself off pretty quickly once I sold some art.
How do you remove the purple background ? Your Video is the best THANKS
Thank you for checking out my video! Your svg should come in with the layers seperated but if it doesn't then click the 'unweld' button and that should separate everything. Then find the layer with the background and delete it. Be sure to click the 'weld' button before cutting or the cricut software does some weird things if you don't.
@@WickedPaint Thanks for the reply ♥️
Let's say if I wanted to do a stencil of myself, where should I go or do?
I thought I was set till I started painting realizing all the scales are very wrong, im not sure how to scale each layer to fit
Don't worry, we have all made that mistake when starting out. That's why I find it important to print out all the layers with the same dimensions, easiest way to do it is in photoshop or gimp...that way you can check each layer before saving it out.
Thanks a lot man
No worries, try it out and have fun!
stencil creator is a very good online software to make multi layer stencils.
I usually make seven layers for photos because I can then add more details
Great video!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Does anyone knows how long do we have to wait between two layers sprayed please ?
Usually 5 minutes till touch dry or use a hair dryer to speed things up
For some reason this site wont accept 99% of the images I upload, despite being png or jpg and under 2mb
I would say try a different internet connection as I have had the same issue when the upload speed was too slow and the website would seem to just crash. Usually I could get it to work with most images I've uploaded unless they where really poor quality and too small.
Heyy Buddy, Adobe finally twisted my arm and i committed to a subscription :)
i got a quick question, can i use a large vinyl cutter for the stencils coz i can pay a bit more for one rather than cricut
What you recon?
Don't worry, soon you'll be making some awesome stencil art and the subscription will pay for itself. I would not recommend a vinyl cutter as stencils need something to hold them together when they are cut which is why the cricuts are good as they have cutting matts. There are other machines on the market so take a look around and see what works for you.
@@WickedPaint I watched a couple of vids on it i just dont wanna make stencils and throw em away after use as i assumed you can use much larger size stencils an a for thicker Vinyl materials, i keep you posted as i think solving this could be a game changer with your app
@KANIVERSE you can also use mylar on the cricut if you want re-usable stencils. Cuts even better then paper and the stencils will last forever if you prefer that option.
@@WickedPaint will look in to it budd, thanks
Hey man, I don’t know if you will even respond to this but I have one issue that maybe you can help me with. When I load in my layers, they are contorted and don’t match up with the previous layers, like one section is higher than the other for instance. And so they look all wonky, but this only happens when I load them in cri it design space.
Hey, you got to make sure they are loaded at the same size. I found it really helped to take the stencils into software like photoshop to check all the layers before I went and cut it on the Cricut.
@@WickedPaint ok thank you
Every time I try to upload a picture to that site it gives me an error 😒
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with it. It works best with smaller images that are 400 pixels in length or width. Maybe try that otherwise you could try following one of my other videos that will give much better results.
Great video , for whatever reason my images never line up. I make them all the same size add markers but nope ! Just never works it's always off I don't get it. I know it's me but who knows why?
I had the same problem when I first tried this but adding the markers fixed that issue for me. Another thing you could try is importing all the layers into a software like photoshop/gimp to make sure they line up before you cut them. The other thing is to make sure you print/cut them at the same size.
How would this work if you wanted to do a silhouette of the image first, and then add the layers on top of it to make the colors pop. I was playing with the site last night and it only separated the colors and not the entire image for a silhouette cutout.
Thats a good point and this method does have a few limitations as you've just pointed out. That website won't give you the option to create a silhouette.
This month I'm working on creating 12 layer full colour stencil artwork in Inkscape which gives you alot more options for adjustment and control. This video will be out in a week from now and what I do in the video is start with the darkest colours and work my way to the brightest in order to get them to pop.
How do you get better photos? The ones I tried looked weird
This stencil maker is great for basic stencils based on small images. If you're looking for a better, more detailed stencil, maybe try photoshop or other software.
Great video....
Thank you, I'm currently working on the next one which will have many more layers and color.
👍
when i downloaded my stencils, svg files werent included. any ideas?
Would I be able to paste all of the stencils in a Google doc and then print?
Stencil creator keeps adding bridges and I don't want them. I can't seem to figure how to turn them off.
Stencil Creator is a very limited when it comes to bridge options, usually it's pretty good at hiding them beneath the layers above. The only thing I can think of is either removing the background from your image or trying another software that will give you more control over your bridges.
this has been really helpful. but Im having a problem every time I cut the image it is not the same size. I used gimp. HELP
I am actually working on some photoshop and gimp projects which I hope to have out soon. What I do to get around that problem is to draw a line at the edge of your stencil which you export with each layer and stays the same. Then in the Cricut software make a note of the size you are cutting then use the same dimensions for the of the layers. In this video I also put a plus symbol in each corner which also helps you line up each stencil. Hope this makes sense and helps you out.
Thanks cool helpful video and I see utorrent on ur desktop 😀
Lol, good eye. Don't use it very often these days but back when I was a student it was a lifesaver in getting the software I needed to do the assignments. These days I'm more interested in free software like Gimp, I will probably make a video on that soon with an 8 or so layer stencil.
Great link to Stencil Creator but after you save can you use other software other than Cricut to enlarge, Im thinking Photoshop or Krita? I would like to hand cut them. Also can you make 90 x 60 cm stencils with Stencil Creator
Yes, taking them into photoshop is great to see how the layers line up and to add a cross in the corners to line up each layer. The stencil creator has limits to the size you can upload so you can either upload the image in pieces or re-size after wards in photoshop.
@@WickedPaint Thanks mister
When I clicked on weld I got a brown box and the image disappeared? Please help!
Hi can i know what is the name of the type of printer That already prints the cut sheets to make my stencil for street art?
I am using a cricut machine to cut my stencil. I use it in all my stencil videos.
@@WickedPaint using programms to make stencil such as photoshop can you print directly with this machine?
@@nicolafusco2842 yes correct, I create all my layers in photoshop then cut them on the machine
What is the maximum size of paper you can cut with this cricut? / Is there a way to cut large stencils with it?
The maximum size I have found you can cut is 12x24 inches (30cm x 61cm) when you use the largest cutting mat. I don't think you can go larger then this as the software will not allow you too.
If you want to go larger then that then the Silhouette Cameo Pro is a great machine and I would really like to get one of those when its time to upgrade.
Ok, thank you.
How could I print a stencil for a 1ft tall wall ??
Hi. What blade do you use for your Cricut?
stencil creator only allows a maximum of 7 stencils; is there a way we can choose more options? tnx
Hi Marko, Thanks for looking at this video and unfortunately stencil creator has a maximum of 7 layers so if you want to do more layers then you'll have to try a different method like using the software GIMP or Photoshop.
I tried that website cousin’s logo and it just will not come out right. It would only be for 3 colors.
I guess it will be 4 colors of you count the base of black. It’s for a wood sign. Can you help me, please?
What spray paint brand and finish do you use? If you stated that in the video and I missed it, I apologize.
In this video I used Ironlak Sugar spray cans as its a local company, in my latest video I use Loop spray cans which are also good and have a better colour range. I'd use what ever is available to you locally and has lots of colours to choose from but isn't too expensive.
@@WickedPaint thank you so much
Can this project (or similar oes) be performed with cricut explore 3? Thanks for the video and your answer in advance!
I used the Cricut explore 2 in this video so you can definitely use the new Cricut explore 3. This is also a good project for beginners as the stencils are simple and do not take a long time to cut.
@@WickedPaint thanks for your answer. May I just ask one more question; is it needed to upgrade the Circut Acess programme from free trial to monhtly subscription in order to work with stencils?
@@markofilipovic7606 no I don't think so. I already paid for the machine so I don't see any purpose to pay more just to use it. I won't be paying for any subscription service.
