Dear Vindooly, I don’t know if letters work where you are or if the forest even allows mail but I’m writing this anyway because it feels like the right way to ask, so here it is straight up, I want to know if you can play with me for 99 nights in a forest, not just one night or a weekend kind of thing but the full stretch where the nights start stacking on top of each other and the trees stop feeling like strangers and more like witnesses, I imagine the first few nights would be quiet and kind of stiff like we’re both pretending we know the rules when really we’re just listening to bugs and leaves and each other breathing, but I think you’d get it fast, I think you’d understand that playing doesn’t always mean games with winners and losers sometimes it’s just staying up and watching the dark change shape and calling that enough, and I think by night ten we’d already have inside jokes with the forest like that one root you always trip over or the owl that screams at the wrong time, and by night twenty we wouldn’t even say we’re playing anymore we’d just be doing it, tossing ideas back and forth, making up challenges like who can stay still the longest or who can name the most kinds of silence, and I can see you being weirdly good at that, knowing silences I don’t, and I think the rain would try to mess with us somewhere in the middle like it always does and I hope you’d laugh when it soaks us and say it counts because that’s the kind of answer that makes things survivable, and somewhere around night fifty I think things would get serious without either of us saying it out loud, like the forest starts remembering us and we start remembering ourselves differently, and I won’t lie that part scares me a little but in a good way, like standing on something high and solid, and I think if I got quiet or weird you’d notice and turn it into a gentler game instead of calling me out, something like mapping memories instead of paths, and by night seventy or eighty the number ninety nine would start looming over everything like a finish line and a cliff at the same time, and I’d probably ask you what happens at the end and you probably wouldn’t answer directly because that’s how you are, but if we made it to night ninety nine just sitting there together not trying to make it special not trying to make it last, I think that would be the answer anyway, so yeah this is me asking, not dramatically not officially, just honestly, if you can play with me in the forest for 99 nights, because I think we’d do it right, whatever that means, and I think when it ended it would end clean, like being set down instead of dropped, and even after we left I’d still hear it sometimes, the games, the quiet, the way you pause before you laugh, so if you get this, if letters work, you don’t even have to write back, just show up, I’ll know what it means. -MY USER IS ZAIDKIDS15
