@@ToxicBastard why did you expect us to dialogue when you weren't willing to have a conversation in the first place?
We should stop thinking of them as "The rules" and start thinking of them as a peace treaty. You're under no obligation to keep following a peace treaty once the other side breaks it.
Shouldn't there be a court where you can enforce those rules.
In my nation, we take those things to the Supreme Court.
Well, sure, but isn't that kind of a slippery slope? Because if everyone starts ignoring the peace treaty, then it's war. And war has casualties. How long before "I will not confirm your judge" escalates to "I will not sign any bill you propose unless it says exactly what I want it to" and that escalates to "Since they refuse to do their job, I don't care what the other branch thinks, this is law now and I will bribe and/or threaten the appropriate people to enforce it."
That might sound extreme and like nobody would stoop that low, but we thought the same about refusing to hold a vote on the opposing party's judge, so...
@@gognokWhat do you do when the supreme court is just as hijacked?
@@TheRedRaccoonDogmaybe a supreme court that must always change every 4 years, based on half democratic and half republican, with an additional seat that changes every 4 years between republican and democrat based entirely on a coin flip. At least that way nothing is set in stone other than some measure of neutrality, which stops the supreme court being swung one way or another. It motivates some sort of desire for coalition and compromise otherwise everything sits in stalemate.

@@martinmartins7703 well, considering that one of the reasons the case was ever heard was because the Court concluded that an established exception to the mootness doctrine allows consideration of cases that are "capable of repetition, yet evading review" (in this case, Roe getting pregnant again, and pregnancy would normally conclude more quickly than an appellate process), and considering its embedded in other cases considering personal liberty in the realm of privacy and became a foundation of individual liberty cases, plus considering prior to Roe a pregnant Jehovah' witness was ordered to submit to a blood transfusion (for context jehovah's witnesses consider blood transfusions a violation of God's law).... yeah i think the overturn is a bad thing
I've always found it disturbing that taking a swing at somebody is considered more uncivilized than politely informing someone that you have signed their death warrant.
That robbing someone through violence is considered more uncivilized than crafting laws that compel them to hand you their belongings and starve.
In both examples, at least with the former, you are taking a personal risk. But with the latter, you are simply hiding behind a shield, smugly confident that they cannot retaliate in kind.
Well said
I've found it disturbing too, although I did it against my will as part of my "civic duty." It's diffusion of responsibility by making multiple people make the decision. I didn't lock a man in a prison for life. I just signed the verdict that said the judge would be required to rule that he be locked in a prison for life with the approval of eleven other people. But maybe ask Ukrain about that.
Have you ever asked yourself why we have "moral". To me moral is an instinctual fear of repercussion. In stone age times people lived under no written law and under Communissm. The one that fished brought fish for all. The ones who hunted hunted for all. The ones who gathered did so for all. Why did that work, you might ask. Well, if they didn't they would have been eighter been beaten up or exiled (wich was basically a death sentence back then). The fear of social transgressions has thus been genetically ingrained into us. This is btw the reason why Japan is a way more collectivist society. They constantly had to deal with natural desasters. Everyone had to help to deal with these. The ones who didn't where shunned from society and left to their own devices. They did so probably until up to the meji restauration (end of 19th century), when they reopened their country after centuries of isolation.

In Germany we say "Toleranz schafft sich selbst ab"....tolerance kills itself. If you keep tolerating everything for the sake of tolerance, the intolerant will make full use of that.
That's a stupid way to put it.
I always say "Toleranz ist nicht gleich Akzeptanz" and what I mean is I hold intolerant views the fuck away from me while not feeding their narrative of being suppressed and silenced.
Because that is the actual fuel for dangerous ideologies.
"Tolerance is just another form of Intolerance"
Germany has actual experience with what tolerance can do to your government when dealing with extremist parties, historically. However, they may need a reminder.
Oh come on, the left was anything but tolerant of Nazis -- in fact, provoking violence was an important part of their strategy. The more Communists attacked party members in the streets and vandalized offices, the more the Nazis were able to sell the idea that the situation was out of control and a strong leader was needed to the uninformed. Are Germans really not taught about the left wing paramilitary groups like the Alliance of Red Front-Fighters and the crushing of the Beer Hall Putsch?
@@ared38 I believe that saying came to public consciousness after the war, so yea, it only kinda works to describe the situation leading up to it. However, in my opinion, tolerance is a two-way street, if those in your country speak nothing but hate and intolerance for another group of people, they deserve a lessened form of intolerance on themselves. That IS justice.
This video came across as a stark rebuff to centrism. More and more I've been recognizing that centrism is a philosophical, or principled, position based on the notion that civility, due process and the refrain from calling a spot a spot (or a fascist a fascist) is morally superior to taking sides. Taking a side is considered engaging in tribe mentality and tribe mentality is considered primitive. And that's what being a centrist is all about: Elevating yourself above the rest by claiming that you embody a form of universal morality. Which is nonsense given that the core of any moral position rests in an emotional instinct. And instincts, are subjective.
Being a centrist doesn't elevate one above the rest. It's an instinctive and tribal position. Going around preaching the virtues of bipartisanship, the moral arc, the free market of ideas, civility and unconditional free speech doesn't make you a neutral arbitrator, but rather the guy standing off to the side scoffing at everyone going "Come on guys, can't we be nice?" I like Obama because he's a smart, charismatic guy with socially liberal stances. But I also see him for the self-righteous, condescending centrist that he is. He can't give a speech without preaching the virtues of bipartisanship to save his life. He fails to acknowledge the writing on the wall.
If you think it'd be wrong to be bipartisan and civil with the Nazi Party of Germany, then why do you think it's a virtue to be bipartisan and civil with the modern day GOP? Conservatism can theoretically be the voice of caution, but that's not what it is in America today. Wishing for it to change and leading by example won't change the monster that it's become. Republicans left team America a long time ago. It's team Fuhrer Trump or bust.
Centrism is a facade to hide the real motivator which is donor money. Donor money drives the establishment. If you want to know where a centrist stands just look to see where his donors stand. Unfortunately, Obama took the big money from Wall Street and did their bidding.
@@lukeriley7882 Your comment and OP's comment make me wonder, and I know OP's comment is old but hopefully someone with similar reasoning can jump in at least... Is centrism really the most effective strategy win?

@@kristenjohnson7041 That's not really the problem, is it? Even if centrism would be the best tactic to win, for many democrats it is not just a tactic but their political philosophy. It does not really help to win elections through centrism and then govern after the same principles, achieving next to nothing.
The core of any moral position is instinct? Dead wrong. Just look at the effects of things like murder and tell me with a straight face that murder isn't wrong and opposing it is just instinct.

@@Rydersilvery They are not left they just less right. If you consider the Conservative Party have free healthcare at the point of entry. Well the democratic party make you sign up to an insurance policy so you still have to pay.
I have been screaming this for years now. You are not obligated to engage in good faith with a person who has already demonstrated bad faith. Nor are you obligated to act politely toward them. They use social conventions and such as a weapon. For example openly discussing absurd and harmful conspiracy theories. No one wants to be rude and call it what it is because its terribly impolite to embarrass someone that way. But they *should* be embarrassed. That is the right way to feel about what they believe.
Seeing how Roe v Wade just got overturned, this video hits different but extra hard
"Maybe everything still goes to shit, but nobody could claim that I didn't do my job."
Yup, sounds like classical deontology to me.
I seem to be developing a love/hate relationship with deontology
Innuendo Studios my debate coach Said to me “A utilitarian would switch the tracks to kill one person, while a deontologist would sit back do nothing and let the other 5 die. “Killing one to save others should not be considered an injustice, it might be not be, but to do so is not an injustice. That’s not to mention that deontologists are the most pretentious fairyland people ever, who think that you shouldn’t kill nazis in 1935 because of Mills harm principle, because they hadn’t started to kill the Jews yet. Though they already did some pretty fucked up shit.
the democrats are still sitting at the table trying to play chess while the republicans got up and lit the whole building on fire. Now is not the time for chess players seeking for a fair play of the game where the rules are agreed upon mutually, now is the time for firefighters.
But the job they're being paid to do is to keep anyone from calling the firefighters.
@J K hammer & sickle?
Dope
Seriously, I consider myself somewhere in the middle, but what repubs are doing is ridiculous. I thought I had sided with the fair side
Citrus Blast Your comment is a microcosm of centrism.
“I just wanted trump because the left are sjws! i didn’t know he was actually gonna hurt people!”
but i am glad that, unlike most centrists, you’re willing to admit that you colossally fucked up, rather then blame a “literally who” on the left with rainbow anime hair for your actions like most.
@@GammaWALLE oh if only the left werent these extremists. The right is basically watching its enemy implode on itself and then reaping the rewards, all they had to do was say a few things to distract the left from whats important to them.
God I wish a mob would just go to DC and just attack the senate, and not because I hate either side, but because they are fighting within themselves and doing nothing good for us the people. We have at least 10 years before climate change ruins all of society and we are wasting our times waiting for the government to call the shots when the government isnt even concerned about that.
>watching this in 2022 as Roe V Wade is on it's deathbed
WELP
god bless america...
Perhaps a fix could be "shame the rule breaking party as much as you can, every day, not by talking about the high road, but by talking about consequences". Like, your party is paralysing government? People are dying, starving, and having a lot of problems as results. Build a narrative on them, hammer on it every single day with stories, shame the other party for the damage they caused and how silly this looks, rather than how "uncooperative" they are, and, as more voices call out (on your side and the growingly exhausted centre) to just fix it, do so stating that you hate how the rule-breaking party forced you to do so.
The rule breaking party keep getting strategical advantages with this kind of shit, you can't let them accumulate them over and over just to maximise the approval your behaviour might receive. If the rule breaking party gains acrimony by neutrals who got burned by their actions and gain no advantage, it makes no sense for them to try damage you with this further along.
"Binder full of judges." Brilliant!
it took reading this comment to get it but indeed, brilliant.
I don't get.
@@My_name_is- Mitt Romney was criticized for saying that he was provided, "binders full of women" to consider nominating to positions when he was governor.
I love how I can watch this video as a liberal and come away with one understanding that I accept and understand, and the come *back* as a leftist and understand way, way better because I know what liberalism is and I can understand this series as just as much a critique of liberalism and capitalism as it is the alt-right.
I know exactly what you mean
Can you explain? Or maybe point to where I can find out that difference? :)
@@Winnders do you mean the difference between liberalism and leftism?
@@unmarketableplushie no, that's what I'd like to figure out really :)
@@Winnders what do you mean by that?
Literally, I am here because they want to overturn the right to abortion, and now they are. And thanks to someone on Reddit that pointed to one of your videos, I am educating my liberal progressive ass and going to encourage my friends to stop trying to reason with the right, and do things that will win the game. This isn’t a debate, it’s a war.
If you're here because of abortion, then you've got a lot to learn. You're not "educating yourself." You're choosing to participate in a liberal echo-chamber, which, incidentally, is exactly what corporate powers want because it keeps the two-party system going. Clinton was the one who passed NAFTA, Work-for-Welfare, Gramm-Leach-Bliley, the '94 Crime Bill, etc. Obama extended the Bush tax cuts, bailed out Wall Street, and extended the drone program. None of this excuses the Republicans' destructive behavior, mind you - but I'm not defending Republicans. I'm only imploring you not to become part of the problem.
"Right"
Wow great video! As European, I initially thought that the process you are describing was inherent to the American system and that our European democracies were spared from that. But no, it is not and I think you can even say that it applies to international politics.
For instance, take China or Russia: they are purposely exploiting the "system" weaknesses by claiming that the Western world is a bunch of hypocrites that actually don't abide the human rights every time they are being accused of killing journalists, repressing the opposition parties or putting an ethnic minority in concentration camps
This is the most viscerally frustrating video I've ever seen. I mean, for the right reasons, but god damn this shit infuriates me.
Same
Who else is here after RBG died?
Anyone who sees your comment so stop like-baiting people who could actually be greeving.
Well, calling the democratic party "liberal" is certainly a stance... Here in Germany they would be classified as right of center AT BEST.
Cucked Germany moment
It's only liberal in comparison to the Republican party.
This aged so well, from the vantage of 2022, it looks less like strategy and more like prophecy
