Interesting opinion, there is probably some truth to it. I imagine if one became obsessed with it after buying it must have had a deep impact - maybe it represented a large portion of one's wealth and thus incentivized learning more about it (certainly was my case). I have friends who have held 1 Bitcoin from 2017, but they are looking to sell at $100kUSD. They still managed to hold through all the volatility, but possibly because it represented only a small portion of their net wealth. They still don't understand Bitcoin and its true value.
My strategy is to only buy bitcoin with the profits from my hobby side business (making things and selling on Etsy). If it goes to zero, oh well I had fun anyway doing something I'd do for free. This has immunized me from any fear of loss during the downtrends. I think spending so much time speculating on the potential gains is a huge waste of time - that is unless you really enjoy learning about it.
Conviction is what counts in the end. Even loved ones may not join in the journey, but the individual must press on.
