@@OddestCube Something else that may counter easy technological dating is that it assumes Earth is the only place capable of developing it. Lumpy Space Princess & Lady Rainicorn are both from completely different dimensions, Lumpy Space and the Crystal Dimension respectively, and they seem to possess at least some level of intelligence. Extraterrestrial life has been confirmed, Mars I guess & Treetrunk's aliens, so there's that. Not only is technology no longer exclusive to Earth, or even the dimension it resides in, but there's also post-War technology that's popped up since the Great Mushroom War sprouted up. Princess Bubblegum and Moe, among other smarties, have likely contributed to Ooo's technological advancements since Humanity became absent and isolated for the most part, along with magic becoming more commonly widespread.

In the episode Simon and Marcy, you can see soviet union planes in the animation shots. Russia could've had something to do with it along with Asia. I have to agree that it STARTED sometime in the 80's and maybe even ended when one of the two sides battle dropped the biggest nuke eventually wiping out everything. I have this theory because in the episode elemental, Patient St. Pim showed her self using powers. Did none of the humans see this as weird. Maybe when the war started, things kept popping up that people with powers and blue skin seemed normal. So the war might've been going on for maybe even till the early 2000's. Then with the final biggest nuke was dropped, that was the last straw. It was so powerful it created the lich. The product of war, hate, greed, and power. When the bomb dropped thats when marcy and simon could've been in. BUTTTTT that doesn't exactly explain the technology that was still being used in the episode simon and marcy. So what if the place where Marcy and simon lived was one of the first places to be hit with a nuke. So then the only technology there was that of its time line while other place might've survived longer and developed new technology such as the flip phone jake used and the mac finn was using in billy's crack. Yeah it's a good theory but there are some things that you've missed 1.look at the photos for example the one that bubblegum had or the ones on the newspapers they didn't have that kind quality photos in the 18's 2.lich was a comet not a result of a bomb (I know that they drew him in the explosion cene, but it doesn't exactly mean he came from the bomb he could've still been awaken or the bomb may have taken a the layers of dirt that been caging him from the time he hit the earth as a comet)
People always seam to think that dated tech and decor means it happened before a certain date, but when/where I was growing up, 80's tech and decor was still very common till at least 2000. This makes your suggestion very realistic to me.

Mavik I really don't think advanced technology could've been invented after nuclear war. If a global nuclear war were to happen, the nuclear winter would last up to 20 years. This would probably kill off the rest of the population, including all the smart people.

Yeah. he did give some very great theories. Generally speaking, technology is the easiest thing to use along with music to try to pinpoint the approximate time something like the great mushroom war occurred. The phone referenced was used around 1990-2001-ish. I do remember VHS tapes and even rabbit ear TVs a major part of my childhood around this time. Not to mention, the truck they found in the episode; "We Fixed a Truck" Where they repair and even drive a truck that looks very similar to some models of older ford sidestep trucks. I do recall my dad owning one that my grandpa sold him that was a 50s model that was still operational and looked exactly like that except for the rear. With the cold war being around that time, I'd have to say it likely wasn't Y2K that caused it, (though the time frame is close enough to make the theory possible) but the cold war gone hot. And even more technology is being referenced that definitely brings it toward late 80s to early 90s.
So, here's my theory, the mushroom war was an extended version of the Cold War, a big doomsday nuke was launched to the wrong place out of human error, the bomb ruptured a tectonic plate or two causing that gigantic hole in the side of the earth which caused major land masses to shift dramatically creating the land of Ooo, the radiation from the bomb is the reason that inanimate objects or elements such as fire, ice, slime, and candy became sentient beings, and a handful of humans survived on, or came to, Ooo after the nuclear radiation dropped to a safer level. Spoiler alert, in the episode Minny and Marty it is revealed that Finn and Susan are from a futuristic island race of humans who have never even seen a magical being beforehand, aside from tales of mutants, like Jake and PB, I think a few humans like Finn, his dad, Susan, and Mo,( Bmo's creator) came to Ooo. As for the 80's tech, have you SEEN how long that stuff can last?! They probably all come to PB to have it cleaned up and fixed though, or they have other magical ways of doing that.

Yeah like how in "The New Frontier", Jake says rocket ships haven't been reinvented yet. So they are most likely aware of old tech and trying to bring it into a futuristic setting. So they might take an old phone and reinvent it as a smartphone

What if the Mushroom War took place over time instead of all at once (like Terminator and Fallout)? Do we know that it happened everywhere at once? Some places could have been effected much later than others, thus leaving technology in certain countries to continue evolving.

I wouldn't have even been born if the Y2K scare were true. I was born in 2000.
And I remember VHS tapes because my family used them for a while. I remember using blank tapes to record stuff on TV. Heck, I still use DVDs because we can't afford Netflix or something. I guess you could say VHS is the format of the working class.
I'm amazed that any of that stuff still WORKS after a thousand years. Even stored properly, most VHS tapes and (especially) DVD's will basically self-destruct in a decade or less.

We still use VHS, at my house. I mean, we also have a BluRay and a DVD player, but some stuff just isn't easy to find on DVD or BluRay.
I'm thinking maybe you just take poor care of your stuff. I've never had a VHS or DVD self destruct.
Now, I'm not gonna say that my own theory is correct, but it can help your 80s theory way more. What if the Mushroom war was an event that occurred after another war, say World War 3? If that's the case, then it's plausible to think that the late 90s/ early 2000s tech might surface during the 80s because of the war. As much as everyone hates to admit, but war has advanced certain technologies and was eventually given to the public. In theory, the technology that wasn't made in the 80s in our timeline might appear in the Adventure Time timeline far earlier. Like I said, it's just my opinion on that matter.

True. Assuming it was the U.S. and the Soviet Union, both sides had probably depleted their ICBM stockpiles by that point in the war.
During an incident in the Cold War, a computer malfunction caused by a CME made the US think the USSR was jamming their equipment. Commanders then told bomber planes to go into a scramble and fly across the iron curtain. The Soviets would have thought nothing of some of the bombers flying through because the US would fly through to taunt them all the time.
Luckily research had shown that it was just a CME and they returned before everybody was roasted.
So it could have been I guess.

The Mushroom War ended with a nuke, due to the quantity of nukes found in the intro. Most of the weapons in the Adventure Time universe consists of nuclear energy such as the giant gauntlet in Finn and Jake's house. The show has shown that the Lich was the opposing army of the war and the frozen nuke from the beggining of the war sliced open and unleashed an explosion that ended all human life. That is when the Wasteland was formed and soon after, Princess Bubblegum made a new population of organic candy to fix the Wasteland. The crater on the side of the Earth explains the scar that the nuke left. The war was basically the world versus the Lich, and at the same time the elemental of ice froze herself before the destruction of all life. So she knew the upcoming event of the Mushroom War and froze herself before the Lich unleashed his final plan.

I remember that Finn and Jake visited an underground bomb factory which they mistakenly thought was a "dungeon" once in the comics. I was so confused on why it was there in the first place until I learned of the mushroom war.

In certain parts of the world, technology spreads more slowly than in other countries.
If the mushroom war really happened during the 1st of January 2000, then it would make sense if the show took place in one of the places that were not quite as advanced at the time (like certain parts of Europe).
The Ice King did seem to live in an old-timey European town back then, according to a flashback, so I wouldn't be surprised if they still used outdated technologies and were barely starting to use newer ones during y2k, which would explain the objects you mentioned.

-someone got WAY too salty at loosing at Card Wars
-the way the bomb worked accidentally used some kind of magic spell

If Jake can use his smart phone to make calls, that implies that there is somebody maintaining cell infrastructure in Ooo. They also had a phone line running into their house that Ice King cut in an episode IIRC.

Honestly, I think that the Cheers reference actually does more to confirm it's post-80s than that it is 80s. The reason being that Marceline doesn't recognize it. Yes, she's only 7 but she'd still have an awareness of it, just like a 7 year old in the 90s would know Friends or in the 00/10s they'd know The Office. The fact she doesn't I would say puts it in the 90/00s. Recent enough for adults to be that hyped about it still, but old enough that a small child wouldn't recognize it.
I always thought the Mushroom war was a war between Humans and Mushrooms and was the start of living food until eventually you get candy people and the candy kingdom. However, it does also make sense that it's just referring to Mushroom clouds.
The Mushroom war happened in the 2010's because in the film, there is a device that looked like the I-Mac and the character uses acronym texting. I think that the Mushroom war happened in a alternated timeline where the USSR didn't collapse in the 1991 and the Cold war didn't end. I have another proof to prove this theory, in an episode (I forgot the episode's name), young Macerline gave Simon a newspaper that had a picture of Simon walking out of the car in front of the gate in Russia (Notice the gate's appearance) and the newspaper which is written by an American journalist insult Simon and called him silly because he was a Soviet (Ice king former name is Simon Petrikov, notice his last name). And the Mushroom war is actually the war between USSR and America

tried to stop it but someone accidentally knocked simon out
of his position then the crown activates to freeze simon so that
he would be safe in the other hand the gut who pushed simon
the bombs fell and it was too late the quantum fusion and plasma
radiates the body of the man removing his skin peeling it off
then his soul was corrupted by vengeance causing the mushroom cloud to have soul like faces screaming when the lich appears

8bit Lich Ok so in the episodes Finn the human and Jake the dog, Simon's dead corpse is stuck in a cave under the frozen mushroom bomb were he stopped it a thousand years ago. It goes off later in the episode and it still has the green explosion with the faces in it, and the guy that you speak of wasnt in that cave to cause the cloud. So it's the bomb itself and not some dude.
The lich was there since the dinosaurs. Or at least an incarnation of him, the mushroom war didn't create the Lich in that sense, its possible it was his next incarnation. Similar to the elementals
