    When all a Game had to do back then can be summed up to: "Have Fun" you know the state of new Videogames is bad by today's industry when all they focus on is Neo-Political affairs and social validation. I miss the days of GameCube and PlayStation 2, when people who said the games were "problematic" were ignored or made fun of and we were justified laughing at them. Good review. Spyro truly is a Gem among Coins, especially since it jump-started the Skylanders Games and collectables.

    As someone who owned N64 back then, yeah, that controller did not age well. N64 games desperately need remasters or remakes, especially Mario 64.
    Some already have been thanks to Rare Replay Collection on Xbox One, but most N64 games have not been updated.
    As for Spyro, I remember really enjoying the 1st game and the 2nd one on PS1.
    The remaster trilogy was great, sucks that the physical copies on PS4 or Xbox One weren't really on the disc.

      Super Mario 64 DS is a pretty good remake, as long as you play it on an emulator and not on DS, lol. The game controls even worse on D-pad. Playing as Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario made it worth it, though.
      Rare Replay needs to come to PC. Microsoft ported almost every other Xbox exclusive, maybe it wasn't worth the effort but I would appreciate it, at least.

    • @Gruntvc
      @Gruntvc 4 года назад +3

      @Synthetic Man, Be nice if that rumored switch release of Super Mario 64 not only includes updated controls but also the extra content from the DS remake.
      As for Rare Replay Collection, maybe they will release it on pc. It was one of the better exclusives Xbox One had besides Halo MCC after patches. No Goldeneye 64 sadly, but Perfect Dark Remaster made up for it.
      Pc port and Nintendo Switch releases for Halo MCC and Rare Replay Collection would be nice.

I could take or leave the marine one. You were an alien you could smash lights and make the room dark so enemys that would have a hard time fighting, crawl in vents, lure enemies with a hiss when you stealth kill you grab the person and a face hugger jumps on them health was refilled by eating enimes heads just awesome and fun. Not without its flaws but man I couldn't even imagine a game like that being made today.

And then I watched this vid becuz I got curious. This vid was a cool calming watch when I was eating lunch and I really appreciate the expression in the words you have chosen to describe your thoughts about the game and the game itself. And I'm so glad you decided to switch between og and remake to put variety in the gameplay.
    And when it comes to me about the game. I really like enjoying spyro whenever it is summer time because of the dedication needed to explore all around the place with the music in the background being pretty therapeutic to play the game as a neat fun time with some challenge but ain't gonna make you tense up like an Megaman X theme. To me I usually listen to video game osts that rely on more bold rhythm to be catchy instead of any atmospheric osts, but man the way the ost for Spyro sounds I find the instruments managing to be catchy and atmospheric at the same time that I enjoy when I need to study or think thoughts. Makes me interested what video game osts you actually like tbh. I am sorry if my comment is very long, I usually like typing my expressions and that college is making me have a habit that I hate.

Activision (from what I understand) has a quota of releasing at least one rated E game every year....... it wasn't Toys For Bob's fault!

    There is thoughtfulness which went into making this video. Makes sense that 3D platformers are about exploration, something which in turn a 2D platformer can't do very well. In turn, in two dimensions the path you can take through a level is very limited and that's why a core gameplay element is evasion, accurate and well timed jumps, basically mastering the movement through the 2D space. Something like Crash Bandicoot limits the path you can take through the 3D world a lot, makes it almost play like a (bad) 2D platformer. It's like somebody had a 3D engine and was making a 2D platformer gameplay wise. The result is mediocre. You have to make it about something that 3D is good at, like exploration, or navigation which is more interesting in a 3D environment. I don't like 3D platformers but I think that's because I see them fail in what makes a good 2D platformer. Instead they are more like the precursor of all those 3D third-person-view action games.

    • @SyntheticMan
      @SyntheticMan  4 года назад +5

      If you haven't played Crash 2, I would recommend giving it a shot before writing off the trilogy completely. The second game has better level design, more movement abilities (high jump, slide jump), secret level pathways, and more balanced difficulty.
      As for 3D platformers, yeah in some ways it is a precursor to action games, especially if you look at Ratchet & Clank which is pretty much a blend between the genres. But the appeal of collectathons is closer to the completionist mindset. Exploring every nook and cranny and grabbing all of the colorful shit. A lot of people aren't really entertained by that but I like the simplicity of it.

    • @leto1178
      @leto1178 4 года назад +3

      @@SyntheticMan A game of that time which embraced the 3D exploration and navigation bit are the old Tomb Raider games. They are basically all about exploration with a rather small amount of combat mixed into it, TR 2 had more of the rather boring combat, #3 dialled it back again with the combat iirc. It also had the secrets and the collect artefacts optional bit.
      What encouraged exploration were the puzzles in the game where you had to find the right levers to open up new ways forward in various way. But for a child those games probably were very daunting because you could find yourself stuck quite easily, those puzzles weren't as in your face and easy as they are in something like the Uncharted games. You also died often from making a bad judgement about a jump.
      From what I gather, Spyro is (for you) more of a Zen like experience, it's flowing.

    I know what you mean. I've recently played Mario 64 and realised how weak the controls and the camera are. Even comparing Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing. Ps1 controls were so much tighter.

    6 Homeworlds
    6 Bosses
    5 Speedways
    1 Bonus Level
    And 17 normal platforming levels.

    I think you are being little harsh to Remake. In visual sense it is logical that game will look little bit different in some instances. I have played original way back on PS1 and 8 years ago on a Emulator. It is nice, relaxing game but it didnt age well in visual department. Remake is so pretty and so well animated it almost looks like Pixar animated film.
    Aside of that, nice video man, keep it up. I found you via your CB2077 Impression video. That was also pretty good :)

    Why is it as good as the others, easy, you play as a fire breathing Dragon in a platformer.
    Love both Crash and Spyro games, would love to get a remake of the Legend of Spyro series too and a CTR NF Port for PC.
    Also i return once a Year to play Digimon Digital Card Battle (PS1) to tripple 100% (Cards 100%, Digi-Parts 100%, Game completion 100%)

    Back in the day, I was what I thought too old for this game and was heavily into rpgs anyway, so I naturally skipped this game. A few years ago I picked this game up in a ps1 bundle and gave it a shot. Loved it. I was really impressed with the production value all around with particular notice of the smooth animation and control. No nostalgia; this is objectively a great game.

    Spyro 2 was better than any other collectathon of the era and the only reason that's not universally accepted is because Mario fanboys didn't own PSXs.

      The remake is nearly identical gameplay-wise, so just go with whatever works best for you. You could always try the originals on a PS1 emulator first if you're not sure

    I'm huge late, but I would like to ask this: Is the remaster worth playing, or better to just play the original? I played the original as a kid and it was pretty great, but I hear there are certain differences in the remake that just kind of put me off a bit -- such as how jumping while charging doesn't make you move quicker.

    • @chebenryan6212
      @chebenryan6212 2 года назад +3

      The best thing about the remaster is the fact that you get Sparx's gemfinder from the very beginning. This makes 100% very easy. Aside from that (and if you don't care about 100%) I think the original is still a better choice. I really dislike what they did with swimming in the remaster (there is a momentum to it so you "drift" in the water.)
      Remaster is still great just not as great movement wise as the original.

    • @deon6045

      Best ones I've played are: Spyro 1&2, Crash 2, Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy 1&2, Banjo-Kazooie, Jak &Daxter, and A Hat in Time. If I had to choose 1, without my rose-tinted glasses I would say Banjo-Kazooie. Super Mario Galaxy is probably a better game but Banjo represents what I like in the genre better.

    • @leto1178
      @leto1178 4 года назад +1

      @@SyntheticMan Thanks, I've heard good things about Banjo-Kazooie. I played some Super Mario Galaxy but I can't deal with the Bing-Bing-Wahoo cutesy that Mario has become. I have no problem with colourful or innocent aesthetics but if it becomes this over the top cutesy stuff then I'm out and I guess I would have been out at 10 years of age as well.

    I don't think collectathons are bad, I think they're just dated at this point. I grew up with DK64, Banjo, and the original Spyro, and I really don't have any nostalgic feelings for them. I was more of a 007, Star Wars Racer, Super Smash Bros, and Metroid Fusion on the GBA.

    I don't agree with one
    This game...looks awesome even today!
    Who don't belive...through eye on videos where peapols run classic spyro in 4k!
    Gameplay in this games is so relaxing and this make that you always have a taste on this games:)
    Also...I not enjoy to new redesing of dragons...what about this difference if redesing and also dialogues is more infantile than in orginal
    Unique desings is only graphic thing
    I also remamber how i was angry because...that guns
    Did moderm world even understand concept of cartoon gun or just know how doing this with distance?
    It's looks like moderm world watched this every parodies in style like american dad or paradise pd or broforce and take this for a fact
    I let mysalfe skip part how stupid is condemn tool not user
    Fanfact...in Polish version voice for spyro in reignited give a man who give a voice for protagonist of Polish version how to train your dragon:)
    What is holerious and funnyXD
    They knew what they do:)
    And also...spyro (orginal and the legend) is one of the best dragons what i ever know
    It's littely like drako from dragonhearth
    I also doubt that toys for bob care about franchise...the do skylanders...
    Dmcdmc in spyro franchise or metal gear survive in spyro franchise:/
    And this is what littely we can see in redesings of reignite:/
