  • Have you done a Crossfit Workout? Can you complete a W.O.D. and then roll in the same day? For some of you Crossfit is a way of life as much as BJJ, for others it might seem like a crazy sport for hardcore people who like to suffer.(Coincidence?) Both BJJ and Crossfit have massive dedicated communities who live and die by the Cultures credos. Though they may seem to be polar opposite the 2 cultures have more in common than you might realise.
JT & Joey break down what Crossfit does well and the value that our BJJ Fam can derive from another group of hardcore, dedicated people. They also highlight where it can go wrong and how this is avoidable to get the best out of this intense sport that mirrors our own.

    The better option: Yoga
If you aren't flexible enough to get into half the moves in BJJ then you're limiting your options. More flexibility also helps with reducing chance of injury. If you want to turn it up a notch try Hot Power Yoga. Doing 60mins of nonstop yoga movement in a 105 degree fahrenheit room is brutal.
I was out of shape and got into BJJ and started accruing injuries and had to stop doing BJJ back in January. I started yoga about 3 months ago and I'm just now getting into Hot Power Yoga the past 3 weeks and it's brutal. Since starting yoga my posture has gotten a lot better and my flexibility has improved a lot. If I can keep up these gains I'll hopefully be getting back into BJJ at the start of next year. The nice thing about yoga is I can control the intensity, which means my chances of injury are way less....but I can still intensify the workout if needed.

I love your podcast and respect your insight, but my experience is different. I'm 46 YO and do competitive CF training 5 days a week in the morning and train BJJ, 5 days a week in the evening. I feel my CF training has helped me progress in BJJ because it helps me build strength, stamina, mobility and body awareness. I've found CF and BJJ t be a beautiful marriage. The problem is my real marriage is getting choked out from my hobbies :(

I've recently started doing both. Because bjj is my bigger priority, I'm trying to go light in the crossfit gym and not push myself to the absolute limit there. I'm not a competitor in either crossfit or bjj. I just want to be as fit/athletic as I can be while still progressing in bjj. We'll see if it's sustainable...

I was actually looking into maybe doing CrossFit once or twice a week to supp my BJJ a while back. Ultimately came to this same conclusion... that's just...too much intensity lol I'm 31. My body is already yelling at me that I need more recovery time and I'm not happy about it 🤣

you should check out 5/3/1 for mma fighters as a template for regular lifting. follows a minimal effective volume approach - might not be optimal, but it's sustainable. at 31, you should definitely be lifting just to keep your body healthy but at a controllable intensity so that you don't kill your recovery.

its too much intencity only if you solely do the MetCons, if you do the alternation (gymnastics/strength/metcons) then you'll be fine :-)
