I grew up in a very conservative Pakistan household but this was religious viewing in our household. Over 40 years later and I still find this absolutely hilarious. I'm not offended by this and whilst the whole cast was flawless Windsor Davies was absolutely phenomenal. RIP Sir. You brought me and my family much joy, laughs and happiness and gave us such wonderful memories for our childhood.

I first came to this country from Pakistan in 1972 and this show had me on the floor laughing with tears running down my cheeks. The show was comedy pure and simple. No offence was taken and to this day I know that none was even meant. I am so glad to have found these shows from a golden era of comedy and am reliving those happy days.
Thank you so much for the wonderful memories and the laughter and joy that you provided. Our lives were made richer by you.

Les Griffiths the pc brigade just don't understand comedy, I have been watching it ain't half hot mum on dvd, so what about the Michael beats character and so what is the poof is said, it's only a word, for havens sake it only a word. The last time the BBC showed an episode of it ain't half hot mum was in the summer of 2000 but the BBC had to make cuts, ie they cut out the Michael bates character at the start of the episode, yet nobody complained when the series was show on UK gold in the mid 1990s but the pc brigade don't even like the goodies, when you BBC caved in, in Christmas 2010 and repeated the goodies, some episodes had to be changed because of p.c, ie the classic eggy thump episode could not be shown because of a blacked up face, and another episode had to be changed all because tim brook Taylor said the word poofda, so what

Michael Sandford I couldn't agree with you more! The BBC head of comedy apparently checks new sitcoms for diversity (ethnic, sexuality, etc), before they get shown on TV. Come off it! He should really be concerned about whether they'll make us laugh! It's hypocritical don't you think they don't air classic sitcoms, because they're deemed as offensive but show sex, foul language and people at each other's throats? Words fail.

DA was a more solemn and mainwaring being a very proper kind of person was very strict with his men...HERE windsor davis plays a very funny loveable , almost as crazy as his men , if not more officer in charge. One is supposed to be in england and this one in Burma...But to me theyre both funny.. I take them at their own merits.

    • @johnnynapalm737

He reminds me so much of my former WO 2 in his manorism except for the lovely boys bit. His usual description of the rank and file was a lot more colourful and articulate than his. He made cursing and character assassination into a kind of art form. If he was still in service today, some cry baby recruit would be crying to the newly formed HR department and the officer commanding for hurting their feelings. If anyone in my day went yowling about the SM or any NCO, hurt feelings are going to be the least of their worries. He was a beast of a man, but he was tasked to take raggy arsed civvies and forge them into fighting men, men expected to stand up and be counted and serve with courage and honour. I am still in contact with a few people in the services and he reckons I would be gobsmacked with the amount of admin and risk assessments to comply with EU health and safety, I personally cannot imagine a more unsafe and dangerous job as soldiering. No place for snowflakes and entitled millenniuls, but times seem to be changing. The recent recruitment campaign for the army, shows a patrol group in the field in potential hostile territory. Suddenly the squad stops and goes to a knee with no cover so that a Muslim can remove his boots, wash himself, and then proceed to pray. The slogan "this is belonging" I don't care what religion he is, but I would not jeopardise my patrol in hostile ground by stopping and making it a vulnerable and sitting target, no ones beliefs should come before the safety and security of the rest of the men in the patrol.

Brilliant comedy, I would loved to have served under Gunner Sergeant Williams, he was a big softie beneath it all, wonderful show, yet the TV stations seem so, reluctant to show it again on TV. WHY.

Omg I'm on my mums account, she is Windsor Davies youngest daughter. Poppa was priceless. If u don't believe me, his children are as follows, (oldest to youngest) Jane Davies, Nancy Davies, Sarah Davies, Beth Davies, Danny Davies. On Wikipedia it only shows Jane because she owns properties. Shit, that's loads of information, want their credit card details too? WELL NO!

Once again and in common with that other Perry & Croft genius of a show, “Dads Army” if you get the right people you get a timeless piece of work that will outlive the greats who made it happen.
Be absolutely honest, can you name one other actor who would have played Windsor’s part better that he did? Windsor Davies did some outstanding work during his lifetime but he was put on this Earth to make flesh the comedy gold that is BSM Williams.Study his performance very carefully. This is quality that could have easily fitted into a Laurel & Hardy film. He’s that good!
    RIP

When I watched as a kid all those years ago, I have to admit that I thought Windsor Davies was an actual sergeant major they got to play the part.
