I run 15w40 in the engine and SAE90 in the gearbox and rear end. Works a treat 👍

Majors are not that picky, as long as they have engine oil in the engine and some kind of oil in the gearbox and hydraulics they work just fine lol. In Finland the hydraulics ususlly freeze during winter and we warm them up with a blowtorch to get them working again💪

After 1955 they changed to using 10w40 tractor oil for engine n hydraulics, not sure for gearbox, cool video! Mine runs sweet after I done the timing! Starts on the button!

You mentioned the forums, what specific forums are you on? I'd like to find them and join them.
I live in Oregon, USA, and I think I just found a pretty sweet deal on an early 60s Fordson Major equipped with a backhoe.
I still need to figure out exactly what year it is, and I need to figure out which manuals to buy for it, but I'm pretty sure I have the old timer talked into letting it go for a mere $500.
As far as I know, there's nothing significant wrong with it. He said it ran 5 years ago when he parked it, it was just starting to have some slight fuel pump issues at that time.

A backhoe Fordson for that price is fantastic, even if you can't get it running you will still make a profit. There are a lot of very useful forums on Facebook, many of them have a files section with manuals and diagrams to help. A simple issue with the fuel pump is usually a cracked diaphragm, a simple fix. Good luck!

I have a 1959 major with no three point hitch. It didn't come with one. It is also yellow, not blue. The hydrolic fill point is directly under the seat. I am in Canada an was told that this is a commercial machine. There is a name plate on the inside of the firewall that says it was done in Hamilton Ontario Canada. Anyone heard of this?

You are correct, it was originally a Fordson Industrial conversion. Generally they had buckets on the front and weights in the back instead of a 3pl. Used in quarries, rock pits and industrial settings, usually with beefed up front axles etc. Some farmers bought them cheap at sales, pulled the lifting gear off the front and made them pull tractors.

@@fixingfordsonsaustralia6632 Sorry about the late reply, just saw this now in my gmail account, but it was hidden in a folder that I didn't know was there. Thanks for the answer, I found another one of these about 10 kM from my place. It has a loader mounted on the back with outriggers etc. Looks like a custom one off build.

I have a fordson major gas, is there anything i can do in the way of a block heater or anything to assist with winter cold starts

The Dextas had pre heaters on them, but I am unaware of any Major models that come with a pre heater unfortunately.

First i drained both tanks and then i filled oil to the rear axle tank. When i saw that in transmission did not come any oil i opened the transmission drain and oil came out. So is this right or is there a problem with the seal? Thank you

  • @DannyV1973

yesterday i check the oil in the gear box it was low, i checked the rear end oil it was high,so i drained some from the rear and when i went to put it in the gear box, it was higher then when i checked.so i topped it off and put the rest back in the rear end,, should the gear box oil be checked after running the tractor for some time? or when it has been sitting?

I do have another video that shows the seal between the gearbox and rear end. If this seal perishes the oil will slowly leak into the lower rear end. I suggest check it before starting and top up as needed.

So 15W-40 for gear box and hydraulic as well?

hi from Greece, i own a fordson major and can you tell me if the gearbox and rear axle oil communicate? Because there are two drain holes, i opened them and i drained the oil. I filled oil from the hole behind the seat and the level for the rear axle is now at high but at the hole that you filled the transmision there is no oil. When i opened the cap above the tractor oil came out. Thank you

They are two different oil 'tanks', hence the two fill points and drains. They are seperated by a rubber seal in the PTO housing under the tractor. The fact oil didnt go into the transmission when you filled the rear axle is a good thing, the seal is working. Despite being different tanks, they take the same type of oil.
