  • In today's video, we'll take an in-depth look at how to use the pillar glitch as well as some creative uses for it, such as repairing the walls of the Castle! I also explain how it's similar but different to the rug glitch, and more of a subset of the group selection feature.

I have only just recently subscribed and just have to say how much I enjoy your videos. Your laid back and thoughtful manner lends so well to the teaching arena. I didn't sub for your content,as much as a few other factors.
    1) Your attitude. You have a wonderful demeanor, & are always concerned that everyone, pc,Xbox, PS4, all get along in the comments & communication with each other is helpful to all,& key to a friendlier inviroment for getting information as well as meeting people.
    2) Your love of animals. My philosophy, animals are people too, better infact. The 2 birds with one stone thing, sealed it for me.
    3) The content is great,i did learn a few things,i wish I knew when i wasnt modding, but this,as i said, wasnt my reason for the sub. You remind me of Gopher in that you care about the community & we're not here to fight about platforms,we're here for entertainment, friendships, & knowledge. By definition they are not people since they're not human. So that's a bit of a an odd philosophy since that's also not really a philosophy, just really an opinion at best? And so long as mammals, amphibians, reptiles and insects do all of the same messed up stuff(Rape, abuse, war, familial abandonment, murder, familicide, genocide, invasion and eradication, some/any of which are on par/above that of humans when it comes to numbers/cruelty of reasoning) as humans I wouldn't be so fast to say better. Especially when we're the only ones that end up feeling bad for the victims or believe that we can do better. Not saying to just go off killing other living things for no reason, just that more thought should be put into modern "philosophies"

@@anthonylongoria2638 my big ol' dog is sorry when she accidentally gives me a good one during play, so contrary to what you said, animals Can feel bad for inflicting pain. that was my only little criticism.
you're right: animals are not human. but humans are of course animals

    • @Volgin93
      @Volgin93 4 года назад

@@anthonylongoria2638 Animals do what they do because of their instincts and because they need to survive and protect themselves. It's nature. Humans, as they are able to think and making decisions however, do decide to do bad things and it's not necessarily even for reasons to survive. So animals are better creatures than humans most of the time.

Before the DLC came out, people would use the fence posts that are in the wire fence menu. If you'll notice, everything in that menu has a duplicate. One half of the set can clip through the ground, while the other half cannot. Knowing the difference and using that to your advantage when pillar glitching can be helpful. For instance, if you DON'T want an object to clip through the ground, but stay right on top of it. Other objects that sit on a normal floor, like the ashtray can be used for this method as well.
An expanded variation of the pillar glitch involves measuring the homes at Sanctuary Hills (4 x 2.5 for some). Build the floor with foundations, add a normal wall (from either the metal, wood or concrete sets), and then add a ceiling that matches the floor. Now you can pillar glitch the entire assembly into on of the houses. This method allows you to 1) make the houses count as having roofs for sleeping under and covers up hole in the roof , 2) Let's you place a floor that covers up most of the debris and leaves in most of the houses, and 3) allows you to place walls in areas to cover up the gaps in the house walls. You can then go further and pillar glitch in some glass pieces to cover the windows. To finish this off you can now place a door into the existing doorway. But, be warned, only one house lets you snap doors to the frame. That house is the yellow one that has the workbench outside of it.
How do you get doors into the other frames?
Place a door frame on a level piece of ground. Choose your door and snap it into place. Place your pillar tool of choice, as close to the door as possible. Now, remove the door frame. Now group select. This allows you to place the door wherever you want. And, if you don't have ocd already, trying to align a door to a frame in this way, will definitely get you there!
As a side note. You can also just pillar glitch a wall with a doorway already in it, into a wall. Then snap the door in place. It just doesn't work everywhere.

there is an easy solution to stop the pillar popping.
    1. select the pillar tool.
    2. cancel the selection.
    3. group select the pillar tool.
this should reset everything and get rid of the popping. :)

Hey Paul, you have a good understanding of the mechanics of this game. So, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! You have a few of us that follow you , that are familiar with the settlement building constrictions. So if you have a query on how things works, reach out. I'm still working on a game save that I can submit for your contest. But, if you have questions, we are here to help. I know you've helped me a couple of times.
On a side note. I'm just curious. Has anyone had a CTD (crash to desktop) bug when attempting wiring? Mainly concerning the contraptions workshop addition of logic switches. I ran into as crash the other day, when I was trying to reconstruct the vault 42 automated rad cleaner setup. I haven't retried yet to see what happened, due to having a wiring bug while I had mods running. I hope that this isn't related.
Another side note. . . . Paul, how is the best way to contact you. I would love to submit a build for your contest, but, I'm afraid that my situation may compromise my entry. Either way, I'd still like to submit something, just for show and tell.

    • @SkooledZone

Court, thanks for adding your value to the channel! I consider myself a master builder but there's _always_ more to learn. I'll be the first to admit that. I love learning new things from viewers as much as they might learn new things from me. That's what makes the Fallout 4 building community so cool. And I've met a lot of those cool people just in the last month alone.
I haven't experienced any crash issues with the logic gates but the logic gates as well as the auto-arch are both videos coming up in my black diamond lessons.
As for the NMSC challenge, I'm looking forward to seeing what you and others in the community come up with! There's no limitation on expertise. There's no rush either. At the midpoint of the deadline, I'll put up a dedicated contest rules video. In that video, I'll explain the best ways to submit links, such as through the Skooled Zone website.

A tip for repairing the Castle walls from another video:
You don't need to proximity-place any pillars or scaffolding to grab the pre-built wall. Just group-pick up the wall near the top edge, and you can work it into place by standing on the battlements. The height or location you grab an object at in build-mode changes how it is held in the air when you move it around. Some trial and error will get you a nice fit on the wall. You can then fill in small gaps at the top with the 1/4 size flat floor pieces.

For some reason it updates the item to its actual position which then allows you to place it without it glitching up..

For the raider spike problem you got, select the one your going to group select with separately, move it cancel it out. Then and when it pops back to where it was you should be able to group select and be able to move it up and down without it popping back up into the air.

One of the things I like about FO4 is that they took Boston and nearly made the exact replica of it before they put all the highways underground. All the suburbs, and regions of the named city in this vanilla portion of the game are real areas of the city.

One thing I'd add for anyone who watches this. You can try putting some scaffoldings on both sides of the shack foundations to make it look more like it's under construction. For me at least it helps take the eyes away from the shack foundations not having lines like the cinder blocks

I was thinking how to let my provisioners pass the Castle's gate but enemies don't (just for estatic) without me opening anything for them. Nor closing.
I was thinking about a powered door that disconnects if a guard activates the siren, that would cut it's power, closing it.
But decided to just make a long runway for the visitors, using wired fence. A long corridor, that turns back, again long then turns back and again long.
Let the super mutants use my runway, lol.

A way I’ve found that sometimes helps with the height issue on the group select, is that I’ll select a spot higher up on the object.
So instead of having my cursor at “eye height”, I’ll select the pillar or whatever within about 1/3 of the height (from the top). I hope that makes sense 😅

For that "glitch" with the group select popping up, select one piece (changes focus to that piece) then cancel/de-select. (PS is "x" for select & "o" for cancel, XB is "A" & "B") then simply use that piece as your group select focus. I use mods (mostly aesthetic/building mods) but still love your videos & use a lot of the techniques that you showcase & explain so well

You can build the walls pretty solidly without the pillar glitch by building a bridge over the top of the walls and then replacing it a piece at a time with the cement blocks. That's how I've always done it on the completely vanilla version of the game. Plus it's good for navigating and building on top of the wall. I even built some nice hoardings up there.

  • @patrikhjorth3291
    @patrikhjorth3291 7 лет назад +2

I see that others have commented with a solution, but the *reason* why things pop up when you do the group select is that you have handled some other object before grabbing the object you want as the focus for your selected group.
In your case you handled the shack foundations before those raider poles.
When you then start the group select, it follows the placement of the previous object, i.e. the shack foundation.
That is why you have to first select your focus object normaly, release it and then group select in order for you to get the desired result. But if the focus object is the last object you placed, this isn't a problem.

    • @SkooledZone

It is annoying if you don't know what's going on. If, for instance you are trying to move a row of concrete foundations, you might need to select the last placed foundation and either cancel the move or replace it. After that, the group select should function as it's supposed to. Sometimes, however, you will need to select your "pillar" and either delete it or replace it. This seems to be connected to a group of items that were "snapped" too close to an object that was placed in a "red zone". For instance, if I place a foundation at Starlight drive-in, next to the screen, and then snapped another foundation next to it. The second foundation may not have been able to be placed normally, due to being too close to the screen, or too much ground interfering. That's when you want to try and select the upper-most portion of your grouping, to keep it from "jumping", or turning "red" when you try and move it. Keep in mind that uneven ground, in certain circumstances, is just another "object, and not ground. Small hills with trees are an example of this. They are not part of the ground. Rather they were place onto of the "ground". This is where having certain mods like "scrap everything" comes in handy. It let's you see what is actually considered "ground". This is also the case with certain decals, such as leaf or debris piles. I know this is a "no mods" tutorial, but having an understanding of how the game mechanics work, helps indefinitely. I gamed unmodded until just recently, and the mods I did/do use, showed me a little bit about how the game handles certain things. And there is no harm in knowing how the system works, to enable you to work around the limitations. This is how the rug/pillar glitch and settlement limit glitches were found, after all.

When you were group selecting the raider spikes, instead of aiming at the middle of the group, point and aim your cursor at the highest point at the top of the spikes then when you look down while they're selected the group will go with it your cursor downwards. it's so much easier to sink them that way.

  • @johnboy78

I found to keep the pop up when group selecting is to grab the pillar first and dont group select, just grab and select just the pillar then unselect it , then grab and group select. It usually always works to fix that pop up and I found it depends on where your cursor is on the pillar when you group select, for me the higher up the better. I don't know if it will work for everyone but works for me.

Hi Paul, another homerun video. Should have used junk fences with the pillar to show to them flat the ground areas where ground isn't flat and touching junk fences. To prevent objects group selected from popping up, group select them clicking at at the top of the object so your looking up to start with then down when moving. Can you do a lesson on settlement building object size management. Let me explain. For the longest time I've used the settlement size glitch to build more then the settlement size allows you to, however once I start doing this I lose FPS and sometimes start crashing even if I haven't gone over the limit much. Recently I've started noticing what certain billable objects take size wise. Like concrete is the worst because it takes the absolute most space settlement size bar wise. Foundation takes the most of all objects that I can tell. So when building I avoid foundation when I don't need it, like in the middle of a building I'll use matching wood floor. Settlement size management is something I've never seen any RUclipsr cover.
