The whole album is about death, passing, and the journey Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett went on to Jaipur. Mainly spurred on by familial death in the family on both sides.
Given this song features Tony Allen, I feel like this is a direct tribute to the drummer and close friend that Damon worked with so often over the years.
Damon Albarn said he was his "number one musical teacher" and that he would "never, ever play with anyone like him again."
Tony Allen was not a guitarist, he was a drummer, and one of the best.
But apart from that, I think you are right!

My five year old daughter has been obsessed with the Gorillaz since she was two. She has all the albums, chooses which one to listen to on her CD player every night when she goes to bed, has Gorillaz merch, and draws the Gorillaz characters all the time (her favorite is Murdoch). We’ve been keeping up with the releases from the upcoming album and we love it so far. I gotta say it’s adorable hearing her little voice singing “the hardest thing is to say goodbye to someone you love” on the way to school every morning. I’ve been a huge Gorillaz fan since I was 11 years old. I’m 26 now and this fills my soul. I just had to say goodbye to someone I love last weekend and now I’m sobbing 😭
Not everyone has the ability to "see" certain things, so to all those who don't it may sound like nonsense (and thats understandable)... but as someone who is very sensitive to whatever it is (maybe a loved one's energy or their soul, idk) and who recently had my father pass away, I can confidently, and I mean with 100% certainty, tell you that you have not lost them, not really. They will still be, just not in the same way that we know. There will still be times you will feel them, and they will still love you. And one day you'll know with 100% certainty as well, because you'll be together again❤

@EffectsRuins not sure about your origin or religion, so I would try to explain as best as I can. In Hindu culture, the body is cremated. The visualiser till 2mins 10 sec resembles that burning fire at night(have watched quite a few recently 😢).
They say when the cremation is complete, you achieve moksha(like soul is free from attachments and cycle of birth and death).

I don't know why, it caught me off guard but it made me cry what I didn't cry in all of 2025. sensibly a song that without expecting it reached the depths of my soul.
This song is something I can't explain when I listen to it. It makes me think about all the phases the members went through, both the virtual ones and the creators, who had a rivalry that took them to the top. Sometimes I think that if Gorillaz hadn't existed, several things wouldn't have happened. There will be people who don't like the band, but the magic of Gorillaz, believe it or not, lies in mixing and varying. The day Gorillaz (both its members and its creators) announce that Gorillaz is over, I'll feel... I don't know if empty, and when I listen to a song from after that time, I'll probably cry. Gorillaz meant a big part of my life, and I think the same for most of you here. In short, I/we love Gorillaz. I'm going to miss the first phase (Gorillaz, Demon Days, Plastic Beach, The Fall, Song Machine, The Mountain) a lot, but I'd better focus on the present. I hope this band continues and continues, because the magic of experimenting with music is simply one of the art forms, and combined with the band's history and everything else, it's beautiful.

Man. This album is going to be fantastic
So back in October my brother had a severe stroke which he’s still in the hospital for today. Around that same time my gf broke up with me and she also enjoyed the gorillaz as much as I do. Soon after I lost the job I was at and now just working on my music and art full time. Gorillaz have been my biggest inspiration and on going band that I’ve listened to for YEARS. They always show up at the right time and influence me to make storytelling music based on life and its relations through art. The fact this song talks about the hardest thing of losing people we love just hits so hard. With the addition of Noodle being the main one for this track. Fun fat her and I are the same age and have probably been through the most traumatic shit in which is reflected in her arts. A goal would to be to at least make ONE track with this band that has been beacon on light. I’m glad this band brings us all together

My grandpa passed away 6 years ago during the time of the coronavirus pandemic (though he didn’t die from the coronavirus itself). “You know the hardest thing, is to say ‘good-bye’ to someone you love”. I’ve been feeling this pain since August 27th 2020.

2-D lost his dad during the time of Demon Days and we have Anoushka Shankar who also lost her dad, Ravi Shankar. Anoushka’s dad was a hero; he and the late Beatle George Harrison, along with other musicians hosted a fund-raising concert at New York’s Madison Square to raise funds for my country. Bangladesh was at war with Pakistan back in 1971. I’ll forever be thankful to Ravi Shankar and George Harrison for their contributions.

The narration of this whole extended version of this song forms the stages of grief. It starts off as in Denial/Realisation and then to the Actual Realisation of something changes. When the actual song starts with happy melody, that's when you choose to move on with the grief you carry. The happy music is the comfort of realisation that theres a celebration of changes and people who are still existing still support, love you, and you are okay to embrace the change while grieving.
My bird flew away yesterday at the worst time possible. That first stanza hit me. He wasn't the greatest cockatiel, but he was family. You couldn't catch him to clip his wings, so we let him and our other bird fly free around the living/kitchen. We had to go out and get my nails done, and the first chance he got he flew out the door. Thankfully, the other bird didn't leave and he's been singing away like it was the best thing that ever happened to him.
I had a dream that morning about the Scooby-Doo movie, but I didn't see Freddy. I heard I Want To Break Free in my head before I woke up. After we lost him and I got my nails done, we were leaving the carpark and I Want To Break Free was playing on the radio.
Our bird's name was Freddie, after Freddie Mercury.

Song Machine was incredibly good but by design didnt have a lot of consistency in how the songs flow together or sound, making an album of great individual experiences. This sounds like everything flows together so cleanly and consistently (like some of their earliest albums, Plastic Beach especially. So far The Mountain feels like theyre making essentially a Plastic Beach 2 in the best way possible) with their eastern inspired sound for the album.
Cracker Island is... also there. It's good. Imo the weakest post Humanz album, but its still good.
Exactly! This feels like the interwoven style of DD and PB, not to discredit all of their other albums ofc. Cracker Island was very good, just abit too generic feeling and lacking coherency. Song Machine and Humanz were fine too, nust not necessarily what I wanted.

I got into gorillaz September of 2025. Unfortunately I only got into the band due to my abusive ex boyfriend enjoying them years back, even his friend that I’m still frequently in a good friendship with now and out of the friend group he’s in. My fave albums had to be the OG Gorillaz album, demon days, plastic beach, and Cracker Island. After my break up happened, I cried all day to their albums until I find a way to cope with my pain. Now that I coped with it after a few months, I was able to freely forget about him. It hurts now that feeling a single person just changes my overall mentality and lifestyle. I still love gorillaz no matter what
Literally, "Cracker Island" could be a way of dealing with something that could have been, but somehow ended badly, and realizing that there was more to life than romantic love.
