Woman Builds a Rotary Cell Phone (She HATES Texting!)

- An American space engineer has built her own, one-of-a-kind cell phone with a ROTARY DIAL because she despises smartphones and texting.
Justine Haupt, from Eastern Long Island, spent three years creating the old school device which fits into her pocket with a battery that lasts up to 30 hours.
When she wrote about the retro cell phone on her website, so many people visited the post that her site crashed.

Facts Verse
Absolutely yes can you buy one
No but Mr Selwyn James from Trinidad and Tobago
Will buy one if it's available to him he hates smartphones
Oh man, I love the futuristic retro design. She could totally sell that!
Yes I would even like to buy it
She does sell them
@@dridar35 where!? I didn't see anythijg in the description
I am going to hold out for the Cell phone Rotary Watch...
@@erikdeeNOSPELLSNO She is actually selling this now. She just showed the updated design.
You could have at least showed us how she navigates the contacts and everything because it's hard to imagine
Back when we had dial up, we remembered everyone's number or you had an address book lol, you know "simpler times".
She has telephone numbers saved on a miniature memory
card she records on a computer and inserts into her telephone.
She dials a single digit on the dial to call a particular person.

I want one
This is a really well done build. Everything from the PCB to the case is exquisite.
This is madness! She's built a phone so that it can be used as a phone!
With not Apps running unknown in the background 💡
I ordered one July 2022. Hope it arrives soon.
I was a really long holdout to even get a cellphone. My first was a Sonim in 2015. Now I have an iPhone 11 and see how dangerously addictive these gadgets are. For someone who used to enjoy getting lost in thoughts, I now waste a great deal of free time playing with the device. Very dangerous, imo. I ordered one of these retro phones because I want my life back! I’ll never forget the first time I saw Justine (the designer) pull a prototype out of her pocket. I was both shocked and amazed. This was before word got out. 😂 She’s an amazing woman with good taste in music. Proud to have known her before becoming the hero of luddites everywhere.
I’m so bummed her original video is gone!!
She had detailed how to build one!
I wanted to send this to my buddy who wanted to go back to a more basic phone.
I wish I had saved the version she put out with all the specs :(
I love that she purpose-built a phone for her own needs. So often being able to work with this level of technology is out of reach.
I love you. This is amazing. Make a desktop charging cradle with a corded handset and this rotary interface. I can't believe this doesn't exist. Amazing.
thank you
I WANT ONE!!! WHERE CAN I GET ONE?
at 1:48 the white part of the dial says western electric! Search ebay with these three words " Western Electric Bluetooth " you will find a device near what is being shown here, just a bit biger but with a western electric dial!
I want one too. I was born in the 80's and we have those til late 90's. I miss these old school gadgets.
This is incredible, Brilliant! Love your philosophy and your endeavor. Smart phones are terrible! More power to you!
I don't understand her, if she can with all the trouble in using a printer to build a phone, she can use a regular phone
You answered your own question. :)
I feel like she put a lot of effort into building this thing when she could have gotten a cheap cell phone and then got a phone plan without text and data if she is so averse to convenience. Is it really that troubling to her to push a button instead of spinning a dial?
Because she doesn't like them, the culture they create, and the lack of control you actually have over them. It's not about convenience, you absolute bug man.
This is an excellent phone. I would purchase one of these. :)

Me three.
no you wouldn't
Love this phone.i hate smartphones too
Are your watching this in one? Lol
I somewhat agree I would use this phone and a sense where I just want to get away and just phone call and not be distracted by all my other apps but I couldn't just throw away my phone I really couldn't
Ok boomer
It looks less complicated than a smart phone, good for her. She's a SMART cookie lol
I wouldn't say she is smart, but she has good hand/eye coordination if she can handle a phone like that.
Oh man, she and I should team up - I've designed a smartphoneless phonebook! It's been on the backburner for a while but last week I finally got it done, it's made out of paper and a pencil
I've designed an electric toaster. The 3 of us should team up and build something.
This was a recommended video for me. As strange as it might sound, I like her use of vocabulary. Very intelligent woman and I hope she continues to make her creative ideas become a reality.
That is a strikingly genuine compliment.
@@zertxer_zertxer well thank you!
Imagine having the skills to build a rotary cell phone, but not understanding how an android works. This is like an doctor whose against looking at charts.
Awesome design and work..but the statements made no sense at all
Yeah she called it stupid and finicky like she barely spent 5 minutes using a smartphone
ok no screen for reasons she explained, but the rotary dial over a keypad was just her being cheeky.
Awesome as someone who grew up with rotary phones, I can see the novelty value in this but Justine owes us an actual demonstration of various features she is talking about and this phone's advantage over current mobiles.
I would totally by that. There is something therapeutic about darling a number using a rotary dial.
Love the "4-way extruder gantry" made from a swivel-chair base at 0:37!
Creative and inventive indeed!
The retro design looks fantastic and I agree on some levels that smartphones can have too many functions that create this hyper-sensation element.
Please, Please, Pleeeeeeease manufacture these things! My wife and I both want one.
or a but it now here. at 1:48 the white part of the dial says western electric! Search ebay with these three words " Western Electric Bluetooth " you will find a device near what is being shown here, just a bit biger but with a western electric dial!
@@Become_A_Paid_Electronics_Techyou still need a smart phone to operate those found on ebay. Unfortunately they are not stand alone cell phones.
Brilliant!! The design is a thing of beauty.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
I think we just came full circle back to rotory phones in the digital world. 😎
Love it but...that..fits in your pocket better than a smartphone does?? Ok lol
This entire comment section is le wrong generation. Grow up.
Sweet! what an intelligent lady practical and logical. I'm inspired I think I'll develop a petal car with 20 gears and a sunroof!
This is what my 89 year old mother needs.
I remember when touch tone phones first came out. Bell used to charge extra if you used one .. the old rotary phones where a bit cheaper to operate. I'm surprised that the networks still recognize the signals from a rotary phone.
Boomers: I'l take your entire stock LMAOOOOO
And Gen X
This comment section is full of old people
I'm watching this on a smartphone 😬
My 94 years old grandmother would LOVE this phone !
Now this is progress! Love it! I have been wanting rotary phones to come back!!!!
I have never falling in love at first sight until now.
If I bought one, it'd mostly be for the novelty, as a conversation piece. I think it's cool... 👍
Fair enough! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
Well done her!
She did what the vast majority of people don’t do when they dont like something so she made an alternative to suit her.
This is her time to shine...someone is winning the future
No I could just go over and talk to my friends like a normal person
I think this is awesome, but I am very curious. Did Justine put a new front end on an existing cellphone or did she develop the entire phone from the ground up? Both would be exceedingly challenging but the latter would be crazy hard I should think.
Looks entirely custom. That's less impressive than it sounds. There are cellular modems that you can purchase and program specifically for diy projects. The real difficult part is making such a device user friendly as she seems to imply by navigating menus with the dial as well.
She developed it.
It uses an Arduino.
Doesn't want to learn to customize the phones UI herself, so builds a whole new phone from scratch 😂
what's so odd about that? Some people hate touch screens, and prefer tactile interaction. I'm in this category too.
Hahahhaha, Bulgarian engineer invented such a Phone in 1964... Soviet engineer too...
CIA : We would like to speak to you for a minute.
Imagine dialing in the crowd with this phone
Wow! I’m impressed. You’re a genius.
This is the reason I use an older flip phone, I hate texting too. I agree with her... send me a portable rotary. (grins)
Well I like texting vs calling. Hell no I wouldn't buy this worthless shit.
So she built an android with a better camera?
"aNdRoId CaMeRa BaD"
Lmao what is this, 2009?

Way to give credit, Facts Verse
You know? This would be good as a punishment for modern day kids, since parents can't take their phone bc kids need to call them just in case. Personaly, I would like this phone, bc: 1. sometimes i need break from social media 2. I can still call my friends and family and 3. I like rotary phones :D
Better luck calling 911 with that
I made a joke to my elders about finding a slip-over rotary attachment to place over their smartphones so they qould feel more comfortable.
Imagine if you move the rotary dial all the way around to hit the number 9 on your smartphone. Yuusss
I am going to hold out for the Cell phone Rotary Watch...
If I could get a cheap plan I would buy this phone. I get very sick and tired of all the stuff I my phone that I don't want.
LOVE it. I hate texting too! And love cosmology! Cool design. I want one.
Could not agree with her more! I despise texting and tell my kids if it's more than two lines, call me. The thing that baffles me the most is when I see my kids not only having hours of conversation through text but also sending voice messages to explain what they meant in a text because of both typos and the fact that the other person cannot hear the intonation and interpreted the text wrong. It's a miracle they are even communicating. Wouldn't it be easier to call? In addition, for the life of them, they would never even know their own phone number or any of their friends or parents.
If they called you'd still complain about them spending hours on the phone 🙄
Warning. Don't order one of these from their website, it will never arrive. I ordered one last November (2023) which should have arrived by Feb 2024 at the latest. It didn't. And I had no response to an email asking for order progress. Fortunately I paid by paypal, so I lodged a case against the seller stating that delivery was overdue and they didn't respond to an email. Paypal opened the case and I had to wait until their procedure was carried out. After 14 days, they didn't receive any response from the seller so I received a full refund. This was disappointing, I would liked to have had the phone, but I'm not willing to lose a comparatively large sum of money in the hope it may eventually be delivered. It's obviously a small start up and they were using the funds from advance orders to fund themselves but ran out before they could reach production.
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
It's truly her phone.
wireless rotary phones? If you were to make this in the 70s you'd probably be a millionare
I dislike texting too.
She will probably make millions from her innovative idea. She's one smart cookie. I liked the rotary dial phones. Anyone else?
I'd rather have this....than the killer alternatives trying to be forced on us.
What do you mean? Are you some dumb boomer who hates new technology?
Imagine texting with that.
I will give her some of her reasons for not wanting a smartphone, but bro, that bulky thing is gonna be worse than having an iPhone or Android in my pocket... I want something like this without its inch and a half thick self.
Today's cell phone meets the 1950s.
Totally on board with this, love of my life lives across the pond 🥰
Girl is a genius. I bet she could build a time machine out of a Delorean.
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great evening!
She should make more and sell it on the market
you can buy a kit to build one from her
Introvert phone
These are awesome in concept and design! I want one.
I'm interested in the rotary dial mechanism. I haven't seen one so small yet. Would I be able to purchase just the mechanism to fidget with it?
Her smartphones do not fit in her pocket and that is smaller than smart phones? What planet is she from? lol
She's more hipster than you'll ever be.
i buy one if its cheap to buy.

Love this phone. No data plan necessary. You don't need to password protect it, the rotary dial will stop just about anyone under 40 from using it.
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
I also don't like smart phones. They have the ergonomics of a bar of soap. She should market this device.
That's a beautiful phone...I can't wait to buy that phone.
I am 73, and I love my smart phone. This phone, though cleverly and beautifully made, is a regressive step which I can't understand . . . maybe she's come from 1955, in a time machine with a flux capacitor!!!
"I'm calling you on my phone"
Yeah uh.... Yeah
>Dosent like Smartphones
>Builds one herself to fufill her needs
>refuses to elaborate further

Where can we buy one, I agree the smartphone is loaded with problems. But its what available. for me, this Rotary cell phone would be much better.
I would definitely buy this phone. I noticed that she only mentions smart phones in comparison, which I hate as well. I bought a flipphone. Im not tech savvy enough to invent my own cell phone.
im the opposite i hate phone calls and prefer text haha
if you hate texting than you’re just stuck in the 19 hundreds
Sell this phone for illegal use as a burner phone. You can manufacture these very fast. Easily sell as a burner for a few 100.
I so love this....
Finally someone saying out loud that touch interface is dumb whoowhoo I am not the only one.
I would buy this for my Mom and my father in law....
Can I see more videos out of these. Also, how can I buy this cell phone ?

Lol she thinks a touchscreen is stupid yet she designs things for space? K
Ayy grew up on Longisland! Go youu! Inspirational.. I hate cell phones i never have them connected to a service, its just my computer.. Id totally buy one of these!
Smart lady👊
“I just want to be stupidly unique. Look at me I’m so different!!” Lmao what a fuckin pick me
You can buy them but you have to assemble them yourself. SUPER difficult. I hope they will become available pre-assembled.
jeez , no need to downplay smartphones just because u made something thats a little bit cool
she basically admits the rotary dial is a gimmick that she doesn't actually use for making calls. lol. sure everyone go buy this.
It's like a level 60 boomer
