The word you’re referring to is ʾaʿrāb (أَعْرَاب). Many believe that this word means “Bedouin”, but that is incorrect. The word ʾaʿrāb (أَعْرَاب) is the original plural of the word for Arab. The earliest dictionary, Kitab al-Ayn by Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi, says that ʾaʿrāb (أَعْرَاب) is a plural meaning ‘pure Arab’. Only later did Arab revisionists who wanted to circumvent the negative connotations of ʾaʿrāb (أَعْرَاب) began to claim that this word means ‘Bedouins’. Other early dictionaries, especially by non-Arabs, often preserved the actual definition of the word.
Some examples:
Al-Mufradar fee Gharib al-Qur'an by Al-Raghib al-Isfahani (d. c. 1109 CE):
العَرَبُ: وُلْدُ إسماعيلَ، والأَعْرَابُ جمعه في الأصل، وصار ذلك اسما لسكّان البادية.
The Arabs: the children of Ismā'il, and the word ʾaʿrāb is the word’s original plural, but has come to be used to mean those who live in the desert.

Kitab al-Tarifat by al-Sharif al-Jurjani written (d. 1413 CE) writes:
أَعْرَابِيّ: هو الجاهل من العرب.
ʾaʿrābīy: an ignorant one from the Arabs.

An Advanced Learner's Arabic-English Dictionary (1889) by Habib Anthony Salmone writes:
عَرَب (plural: أَعْرَاب)
a. Arabs, Arabians, pure-blooded Arabs.
