@@voltakackackack666 I am sure your suggestion is sad, but no. With a stanza as poetic and with poignant imagery as below, and sung with the depths of sorrow that only Hank could deliver in his vocals, I will stick with it as the saddest song in my opinion. And this from a rock and roll type that only samples country on occasion--but this song is an existential masterpiece. In fact, it is the only song that is so sad it is actually hard for me to listen to it at times because of the sorrow it ilicits.
"Did you ever see a robin weep,
      When leaves begin to die?
That mean he's lost the will to live,

"Charlie Parker, the great jazz great, was feeding jukeboxes on 52nd street in the '40s playing country music, playing Hank Williams, playing 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' and the Cats were saying, his fellow band members were saying, "Bird what are you doing? Why are you playing that?"

HANK is considered the KING of Country. He was one of Elvis' biggest influences, yet you seldom hear about it any more. In the evolution of music, particularly Rock, Country music was 1/2 of the formular Elvis used, combining it with Blues. It was called Rockabilly (Hillbilly swing music with Blues). The new Elvis movie totally omitted that.

Hank Sr was the first Rock Star if you ask me. Rock and Roll in the '50s, was a mix of Blues and Country and Western. This was 1951. Young teens were out getting cars for the first time and going out dating. Radio was still some-what new. This music was a whole lot better than what their parents had listened to. This spoke to the heart, a whole lot more than the songs from the big band era. Hank had so many hits.

Big band and swing music was way more sophisticated musically and lyrically than this. They had Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Fats Waller, Billie Holliday and so many other amazing talents. Don’t get me wrong, I love Hank, but what happened is that jazz musicians abandoned dance and popular music in favor of artistic expression after WWII, leaving a void which was filled by country, jump blues and RnB artists. These genres used more basic musical structures and more direct lyrics which appealed to young people just as jazz was becoming more abstract and complex. But the new music was certainly not better by any yardstick you could use. It just filled a need for dance/pop music that jazz was no longer interested in catering to.

There is a video of Hank singing a duet with Anita Carter, the youngest of the carter sisters. In the video you can tell she is a star struck teenager.

Back in the day, going steady was a big thing in high school. You allowed your girl to wear your senior ring, your high school jacket, etc.. It was an intern step before getting engaged.

Best singer and songwriter that ever lived. PERIOD!!!! He was also the first hint of rock and pop before Elvis.
That's Anita Carter at the beginning. Johnny Cashs wife's sister. Beautiful singer!! You should do I can't help it if I'm still in love with you with them singing together from this same show. She was so mesmerized with him.

Hank Williams wrote some of the most joyful songs ( like this one and jambalaya) and some of the saddest, darkest songs ( lost highway) you’ll ever hear. His influence is immense. I’d bet at least half of the American artists you’ve reacted to have covered a Hank Williams song.

Hank’s career was quite short, but what he accomplished in that brief time is highly regarded. He is one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Sadly, he was only a few months past his 29th birthday when he succumbed to heart failure. Years of taking pain medication for severe back pain and heavy alcohol consumption led to his demise. His son, Hank Jr. followed in his footsteps and has been very successful. You should look into his catalog. There is lots of good music there. BTW congrats on your baby!

Hank SR lived the rock-n'-roll lifestyle before it was called rock-n-roll. His music lives on. He's one of the Greatest of All-Time. Various addictions and chronic back pain damaged his body enough that he passed at 29 years old.

You have to understand that Hank Williams Sr. is generally considered the most seminal and greatest country artist ever despite having died so young. One can only imagine if he had lived longer how much more great music he would have produced.
