Brilliant !!! This gives me inspiration for a beautiful way to bring the outdoors inside. Kitchen, bathrooms, foyer, the possibilities are endless. Thank you so much for sharing. HUGS
I received my first herbarium anonymously. Years later i still don't know who, but it was lovely and i am looking forward to making my first one with oil.
This is not new it was hot in the 80s I made some myself. I used some pearls, a tad of fine glitter, dried flowers, ferns. With baby oil. So the glitter and pearls or tiny gem stones could float. Glad to see it's coming back I love them and they are great gifts. You can also dip the top in melted colored wax and tie it off with fake tiny string of pearls or slender ribbon. I guess there are endless ideas. Thanks for a reminder I'm wanting to make them for gifts.
I would just like to thank you and your lovely video. I watched it a while ago and it was the best video I've found. So informational and it's been the biggest hit of my business. Just bought a 1L corked jar to make a giant Herbarium with dried fruit wish me luck!
Hello Megan, I am so pleased you loved the tutorial. They are such wonderful additions to any environment and make for great gifts for those living in small spaces. I make lots of these for friends in either hospital or rest homes. Something lovely to visually look at. Please send me photos once you have finished the fruit herbarium. You can direct message me to my astarsplace instagram platform. I'm excited to see how it looks. Warm regards Astar

@Kenyce Wescott I reckon you could add fairy lights BUT only if they are waterproof. Changing out the batteries might cause issues though. Hope this helps, Astar
Didn't know this had an official name, but this is the exact idea I had come up with for my wedding unity ceremony, so thank you so much for this tutorial because I couldn't find "oil unity" ideas ANYWHERE
Hi Dana, When I saw them in Japan, I too fell in love with them. They looked like botanical stained glass moments of gorgeousness twinkling in the light. Very easy to make, wonderful gifts and so easy to visually enjoy. Warm regards Astar
@Kenyce Wescott hello Kenyce, my thoughts are that if the cork is firmly wedged into the top, all should be fine. Wine corked doesn't leak, so as indicated, it should be ok. Hope this helps? Astar
@@AstarsPlace hey, I was wondering if it was normal for the oil to turn yellow after some time ? I made my mom one herbarium with local flowers that I dried in the oven and put the baby oil, it was okay and now turned yellow. She lives in a hot zone but it wasn't put in front if the sun. Thx so much 🙏🏻
Hello, I used the cork because authentically that's what is used. I was going to wax seal the cork & further embellish but time run away on me. I suppose any screw top would work as a means of keeping it sealed. Hope this helps? Warm regards Astar
So all of the goodies you put into the bottle were dried? It seems everything was fairly pliable. Would fresh cuttings work? You mentioned using mineral oil. Do you imagine this would work with a reed diffuser that uses a carrier oil and aromatic essential oils? I see reed diffusers that have decorative bits in the bottle which not only gives the diffuser some character, but also gives people a hint of the aroma they are experiencing. One diffuser called “Forest” by Rosy Rings has tiny pine cones, pine needles, fern, and forest flowers in the bottle. However, if you look it up, they are quite expensive. Using your technique, people might be able to make one for a fraction of the cost!
Hi there, fresh cuttings don't work as I discovered. They kind of go a funny yuck colour after a wee while. Now you your idea of using Reed diffuser oils etc. I'm going to give this a go because I can't see why it would work and I can see the blooms suspended in the diffuser. Beautiful. It's on the try list tomorrow and possibly on my next filming list. Thank you for the tip. Fingers crossed its a winner, Astar
@@AstarsPlace Thank you for the swift response. After some additional research, I have to believe dried plants in the reed diffuser is the key. I’ll be interested in seeing how yours turns out. “And may the odds be ever in your favor!”

Hello Omega, these herbariums make for the best gifts. Strictly speaking the Japanese only use dried and pressed flowers. Anything fresh will just bleach or leach out in colour. Hope this has been helpful? Kind regards Astar
That’s what I’ve been trying to research. I read it doesn’t last as long and you’d still have to open it and stir every now and then, but I don’t like the idea of using petroleum on flowers
Hi Mimelia, I wish I could say yes BUT I have to say that's a NO. The oil also helps with suspension, longevity and as far as I can tell after a year no fading and no bacteria. I just did exactly what the lovely lady in Japan instructed me to do. Enjoy Astar

hi there. i had only heard u can preserve flowers so i used fresh ones. they kinda faded within a few months, they lost colour and became a little brown like. but they were really beatiful at the start
