To become a conservator you usually have to take a postgraduate
training course. There are many different courses which specialise in treating
different types of object or preventive conservation.
You need qualifications and interest in either art, art history or science. Look on the ICON (Institute
of Conservation) website for more information.
There are some alternative entry-level routes but these are less common. Volunteering at your local museum or heritage site is a great way to get some experience!
      We hope this helps you.

Am I the only one who actually dislikes this? When it is changed, it's not original anymore to me.

If artworks (not only paintings) were left in their original state, you would not see much of it. It is very rare to encounter an untouched artwork, most of them are not on their original canvas, are over painted, damaged, flattened, more shiny that they should be. Pushing further, the light we are using is not the one painters had in the past, hence not the same colours.
Nowadays conservators are doing "minimum intervention" and would not change the painting, even when they notice something "added" on to it. When you see them painting, it is to fill hole where the original is gone, as the ground was not intented to be seen, it is not "original view", this one is lost.

They put a protective coat on before they retouch, so you can always remove the retouching and get the original work. Untouched.
