Yet this is begining to look like wishful thinking in a nation that certainly has much to protest about. Just last month MP Lim Guan Eng publicly defended a teenage girl who had been detained after she accused an UMNO Party member of rape. His defence of the young girl earned him a year and half in prison. Malaysia’s jails are full of government critics just like Eng thanks to the Internal Security Act. An archaic colonial rule, it’s been enthusiastically maintained by Mahathir. With this law Ministers can send a person to jail for two years without trial. Flicking through a smuggled letter from an ISA detainee, human rights activist Elizabeth Wong relays a catalogue of abuse: brutal beatings, mental torture, prisoners forced to eat their own excrement. With excellent access to key figures battling for change, this revealing report finds the reform movement in full voice.

What's worrying me is that the Mahathir I saw in this video reminds me of what China is going through right now. Thank god for blessing us with Anwar Ibrahim as our prime minister. Good documentary. Sad to see what PM Anwar Ibrahim, wife Azizah, Lim Guan Eng, ISA detainees went through for the country because of Tun M. Tun M should be jailed for causing misery to so many people. Hope all government insitituitions, AGs, PDRM, MACC, the Judiciary etc will not blindly follow intructions by their political masters. Malaysia lost 24 years of good governance and development. Just look at our neighbours from thailand, to singapore to indonesia. We could've surpassed everyone. Instead, we have mahathir making things worse for the people and further corrupting his own party, and then abdullah and najib and the other useless prime ministers denying Malaysia the real progress it deserves.

Barisan Nasional (BN) used their financial means to monopolize the “3M’s” (money, media, and government owned machinery.¹⁹) This created a legacy of corruption that fostered cronyism, gerrymandering, malapportionment, political-patronage²⁰, and clientelism²¹. The BN government also imposed methods of repression and control through the ISA (now replaced with SOSMA), Sedition Act, Police Act, Peaceful Assembly Act, PPPA, OSA, and Societies Act to intimidate opposition parties and silence dissidents (in order to protect the “social stability”, “security”, and “public order” of the country). That should give you an insight into the quality of Malaysia’s historical democracy.
Voters tend to lean with their own ethno-religious and regional identities, leading to ethno-nationalistic policies over inclusive ones. Many Malays feel threatened by the possibility of losing their privileged ethnic status and Islamic rights²². They’re also more likely to hold skeptical views on Western culture and values. It certainly doesn’t help whenever former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad issue statements that demonize the West:

Anwar's impatience and greed for power had led Mahathir to this decision of sacking him as DPM and his subsequent expulsion from UMNO. His reformation movement alleging injustices was purely an afterthought. He used this failed movement just to seek revenge against Mahathir. His political gamble of unseating Mahathir backfired.That's about it.
And now, Anwar seems to finally learned a lot from then, and now it seems that from his manifestos, it seems like he's really willing to make changes in terms of economy of our country
