Having met Mr. Humphries several times after OMD shows, he has proven to be one of the most gracious musicians / celeb band members I have ever met. He chatted away with me in an alley behind a club for 10 minutes just as casually as he is here. Even though he'd probably been asked about their debut album a million times, he answers with enthusiasm and an honesty that is just rare. 'Pretending To See The Future' is a favorite as well. I asked him if the version of 'Telestar' that has been floating around for years was actually them and he said yes! and wondered how I heard it. He and Andy both also elaborated on some rare stuff like "Sampling The Blast Furnace'' to the scarcity of his Listening Pool CD to most anyone in North America. Class act.

Very nice interview, thank you. I ordered the new Bauhaus Staircase album as soon as I heard the new single. It's very electronic, very 80's and that's what I like the most. I ordered the 2CD numbered, signed limited edition of the new album, looking forward to this release.

Well, Andy said on a gig here in Leipzig that they always wanted to be "a cool synthesizer band". But Paul here on the video looks like the nice older man from just around the corner.
Nevertheless, they are still awesome. The new single "Bauhaus Staircase" is brilliant. Unfortunately, it looks like it's really the last round of the lads. Let's see what happens.
And by the way, the scene I was talking about was during a summer party here in Leipzig. Paul announced his forthcoming marriage and wore something like a banana skirt. And the full sentence from Andy was "We always wanted to be a cool synthesizer band, but we are not cool anymore". Was a lot of fun.

If anyone is interested, I just transcribed this as best I could, using the RUclips Show transcript. and cleaning up all the formatting and deleting the time signatures, etc.
    You’ve been here before.
We've been here many times, yeah. I mean we did a W-Fest two years ago, but of course we shot some of our Locomotion video here in Ostende. And we used to live in De Haan. Andy and I lived in De Haan near Bruges for you know, four months or something, and so we know this area really really well.
So there's good news; there's a new album coming can you tell us something more about the sound maybe?
I think it's a natural step from the punishment to luxury album it's still very electronic I think if you can put one thing to it that's different maybe I think we're more political on this then perhaps we have been in the past although we have touched on politics from you know anti-nuclear war songs like Enola Gay to Dazzle Switches about the Cold War with the Soviet Union so we have touched on it before but I think we've been more overtly uh political with this album because you know maybe we're just getting grumpy and becoming Grumpy Old Men now but you know the thing is there's so much going on in the world that you you can't ignore it really think I mean the the ridiculous idiocy of Brexit you know which was just insane is the you know British self-harming you know by by on mass you know and and of course you know everything that's going on in America, Trump, and all over Europe you know the move to the far right is is concerning to us so so we're kind of talking about that really more overtly than we have done in the past.
And where was the album recorded?
The difference between this album and all the others was that it started in the pandemic and I was in France where I had a holiday home in France where I was stuck there because I couldn't move because the because of the restrictions because of the pandemic and Andy was stuck in
Liverpool he couldn't come visit me so usually with our albums we we sit in one room usually Andy's studio in Liverpool and then we bat around a whole load of ideas and then we take them away both work on them separately and then we get back together and see what each other has done to the song and then Jason we couldn't do that with this album, so we had to send you know massive files to each other from from France to Liverpool and Liverpool back to France fortunately I had a studio set up in the south of France
Did you already play your songs live from the new album?
No we're going to wait till next year before we start playing songs live. I mean at the moment we haven't got it. It would have been nice to play Bauhaus Staircase actually, but we’ve have no time to rehearse because we've been so busy.
How do you look back to writing the first album of OMD with a beautiful song Pretending to See the Future? I love that song yeah I mean the first album was the culmination it was basically everything we had we'd written together, well the best of everything Andy and I had written together to that point because you know we started writing songs when we were 15 and we were teenagers yeah. I mean Electricity, I was 15 and he was 16 when we wrote that one, so we were kids. And so the first album was that, basically everything good that we'd written to that point. So it's different now because you know I mean the technology is different. We're far more experienced, we're much better musicians. But after all these years we still feel like we have something to say, so we're going to keep saying it.
But this could possibly be our last album but we don't know; we said that about the last hour and the other memories about Belgium I think Knight of the problems with Simple Minds together singing Neon Lights oh yeah. I mean we loved those night at the proms nights in Antwerp it was, they were just amazing you know. So I mean yeah, they're very fond memories, yeah, playing with an orchestra was amazing, you know really great fun.
Okay, bring us back to the first idea to write the song Maid of Orleans, do you remember that first moment?
Yeah I mean it came out of us touring we have this, I can't remember the name of the band, it was this young new French band. We were touring France and they said oh, every city we're going to is related to Joan of Arc, do you realize that? We went oh okay.
Joan of Arc, that's a good subject matter
We had the Maid of Orleans first and Andy didn't think it was any good, so he decided he wanted to write another one. So then we had two Joan of Arcs and we were gonna put the Maid of all the arm wasn't gonna go on the album. But I think it was Martin our keyboard player.
So what happened to that other Joan of Arc?
I really liked that and and so we listened to it and we said oh, actually maybe you're right, so
we've got two Joan of Arcs now.
Do you remember the recording of the video clip you're playing chess and Andy was reading a book at the beginning scene I mean that was an amazing day actually because you know it looked like we planned a video in the snow you know but just by chance it snowed overnight and we had this shooting the next day and we woke up opened the curtains and went wow it's been snowing it's going to look amazing with the horse you know so but we were we were working in the Mana studios in Oxfordshire that we were working on architecturally at the time so it's a nice opening scene yeah it's beautiful yeah yeah with just luck that was just pure luck
The last question is for Andy. Where does Andy get all this energy to dance on stage?
Yeah, he sleeps all day. He's now sleeping, he's sleeping. But no, I mean the thing is, we still love playing live and we've always put masses of energy into our shows and we'll only keep going if we can maintain that energy and we're you know we don't get we're not getting any younger. But we still have masses of energy and enthusiasm. So as long as that continues, then we'll keep doing it.
Thanks for your time, Paul, and have a nice gig this evening; I'm really looking forward to it, it's going to be fun as always.
    Thank you okay cheers

      My dear Sir
Art is useless because its aim is simply to create a mood. It is not meant to instruct, or to influence action in any way. It is superbly sterile, and the note of its pleasure is sterility. If the contemplation of a work of art is followed by activity of any kind, the work is either of a very second-rate order, or the spectator has failed to realise the complete artistic impression.
A work of art is useless as a flower is useless. A flower blossoms for its own joy. We gain a moment of joy by looking at it. That is all that is to be said about our relations to flowers. Of course man may sell the flower, and so make it useful to him, but this has nothing to do with the flower. It is not part of its essence. It is accidental. It is a misuse. All this is I fear very obscure. But the subject is a long one.

This observation, comes from my personal experience as a Canadian who's family escaped the ravages of Communism in a country, who's "radio free Europe" opening broadcast segment you sampled on Dazzle Ships !
