- Would you like to sound more like a native English speaker? Well, this vowel sound, known as SCHWA, is worth getting to know! It occurs very frequently in spoken English, about once in every three vowel sounds, in words such as “the”, the first syllable of “about”, and the second syllable of “sofa”. One of the most difficult aspects of the schwa sound is that in order to pronounce it correctly, you have to almost ignore the normal sound of the vowel you are looking at and make the schwa sound instead. In this lesson I’ll give examples of words containing the schwa, and I’ll demonstrate how to pronounce them. So you can benefit in two ways, both in terms of English pronunciation and English vocabulary! www.engvid.com/speak-english-...

Hello, thank you very much for your work! My native Russian language. I studied English on my own. For me, you are one of the best English teachers on RUclips! Please be healthy and safe 💖⚘
Thats the very BEST EXPLANATION of Schwa I have come across... and I have seen plenty trying to understand the Schwa better. Now it is very clear. THANK YOU VERY MICH. BLESS YOU !
You are amazing and a real inspiration! Thank you!
That was a very clear representation of British accent. Much appreciated. Love from me
Excellent class Mrs. Gill!
How wonderful, thank you so much, teacher.
Thank you very much for your pronunciation lessons, I'm living in a not English speaking country, so that's really needed and useful to me
I would say "NON Eng speaking ...".
Neither am I a native speaker.
Thanks for breaking it down and providing examples. This will definitely help a lot of learners sound more like native speakers!
I am English and in my eighth decade but I had never heard of the schwa until three or four years ago. Since then, I have watched videos and read up on the subject. This video is excellent and I’m pleased that the RUclips algorithms brought it to my attention!
People often say that English is not taught properly these days. Judging by the very limited amount of grammar that I appear to have been taught in the fifties and sixties, I would challenge that claim.
Thanks. i an brasilian, live in Rio de Janeiro. i love learn inglish with you.
It's really interesting and helpful, thank you so much ❤❤❤❤❤❤.
Hello Gill, great class! Thank you for that ❤ greetings from Brazil 😊
Hello, Mrs. Gill ! I'm glad to see you ❤
In Russia, British English is predominantly studied as a foreign language at school, but schwa is not studied as deeply. There is no native speaker as a teacher to explain such nuances
In the early 90s in Kyrgyzstan, one of the former soviet republics, there was an introductory phase of 3 months in fonetics in English language institutes, so one could get to know all pronunciation nuances.

Thank you, dear Gill, for an informative lesson! It reminds me of my 4-th grade at school, back to USSR! Nowdays, leaving in USA, I can see & hear the lingual differences between these two cultures! Anyway, I can't hesitate to listen for your classes because it's dipper my knowledge in English language, besides, I odor the way you're presented you lectures! Thank you very much!🌹
This woman is clear, she is clever, and right about al she teaches, and she speaks well herself, and is obviously a kind person, so she is a 'find' and easy to listen to. Whew! John.
You have no idea how many videos I've seen about it and never understood. This means that teaching English is not for everyone, even those with a long list of credentials. Thank you a million times more :-)
Finally, a simple, direct, and straightforward explanation of the schwa sound. Thanks a million :-)

Gill, you are a wonderful teacher... Congrats! For many years, I taught Spanish and French as foreign languages; my specialty was pronunciation. Even in my native language (Spanish) It's not so easy.
You are the best!!!! Greetings from Spain 👏👏👏🥇🥇🥇 I love your explanations, your accent when you show us (the learners) how to pronounce. Thank you so much! You really help with our English learning.
Do we know if that schwa sound when we pronounce the ending -er as -ah adopted into English language when the Saxons from Germany invaded England?
In German they also don’t pronounce the -er but they make an -a sound.
Thank you Ma'ma

After studying English for years and years in school, I can't remember anyone ever mentioning this. I wish they had, because I had never realised such a thing and difference in pronounciation in some words by myself... Like man - postman
