Madonna pretty much called the shots when it came to her music from the beginning. The minor things she maybe couldn't completely decide such as which songs to release as singles or the release order of the singles pretty much disappeared after her 2nd album because she no longer owed her label money. From that point forward she started paying for everything directly and only turning in her work to fulfill contractual obligations. That is almost unheard of for an artist to pay off the label so fast. That's Madonna.
