    One of the things I like so much about this video is the casting - people who know who Dylan and Sadie are tend to also know their ages and get VERY UNCOMFORTABLE watching them kiss (or being “naked” in bed together). Which leads to the really good question: why didn’t we react that way to the IRL situation? (Instead, society turned her into a joke.) 🤔

    • @Dazzlefae
      @Dazzlefae Год назад +41

      And not only that, but Dylan is kinda known to be this charismatic and charming guy. When we think of him, we think good guy. It challenges that perception to see him as this manipulative guy, watching him gaslight her and all that. The casting was just perfect for so many reasons.

    I didn't realize you hadn't reacted to the short film until now. i just knew yours would be an emotionally intelligent reaction and that's exactly what you delivered. There are many moments that are painful to watch, and of course that's by design.
    You caught onto the gaslighting so quickly in the kitchen scene. If you rewatch it, you'll notice there are moments where Sadie is on the far left of the screen and Dylan is on the far right, and in the center, between them in the background is a fluorescent light above a gas stove. Also, when you paused to comment on crossword puzzles, I realized that is another symbolic reference I hadn't noticed before. "Fighting with him was like trying to solve a crossword and realizing there's no right answer" (lyrics from Red).
    Yes, please do react to the behind the scenes footage. It's only about 6 minutes, but it gives insight into some of Taylor's creative process and intent for certain scenes, as well as a glimpse at her approach as a director.

    Dylan O’Brien!!! His first role was as Stiles in Teen Wolf (and for a first time role, his acting was INCREDIBLE in that show)! The other thing he’s most known for are the Maze Runner movies. Also worth mentioning that the fight scene in this short film was completely improvised.

    • @ingobordewick6480

      Not true. Taylor said it was scripted but they improvised some of it. So not completely improvised. She said "I can't take full credit for that" at the Graham Norton Show.

    The whole short film was a great example of why that age gap (she was 20, he was 29) just doesn't work. He was plenty old enough to know better, and I believe he downplayed their romance in front of his friends because they were also 29/30 and probably thought it was a little weird or even inappropriate.

    • @notyourmanicpixie
      @notyourmanicpixie Год назад +13

      also, just a note he is 42 now and dating a 26 year old now. not necessarily inappropriate now, but it does feel like a pattern for him.

      I didn’t necessarily think badly of Jake until I read the "Me and the Movie Star" essay. My god. Like John Mayer, it wasn't just the age gap and power imbalance - it was the fact that both men seem to get off on manipulating young women - and then turn round and blame the women for not being "mature" enough to handle it. Fun fact: 45 year old John Mayer is now dating a 22 year old, while Jake started dating his gf when he was nearly 40 and she was 22. Sigh.

    I've seen this film many times. The scene with his friends and the fight scene after always hit very personal for me. I've had experience with a narcissist who loved to use gas lighting, so watching the fight scene definitely brought up some stuff. The detail of her wanting to hold his hand for comfort also hit really hard. My love language is touch, not to the point of PDA, but just those small little touches of affection that let you know they care. My husband's is not. It's been a hard thing in our relationship for both of us to understand about each other. Taylor is great at bringing out my emotions that I tend to bury and that definitely had me bawling.

  • @Pathfinder197
    @Pathfinder197 Год назад +7

    Great reaction - note the gas stove with the big light over it between them in the kitchen argument scene. And it was shot on 35 mm - and I believe in 1.33 aspect ratio - to give it a more nostalgic feel. Just a beautifully acted, directed and shot short film. If you watch the bts vid you’ll see what a specific vision Taylor had for this. It actually feels like a natural extension of her storytelling as a songwriter. I’m psyched for her to eventually direct a feature length film.

    a really good storytelling here. I watched this short film once before and it was just too... close in a way as I had such age gap story in my 20th which ended on Christmas night. there also was a scarf I made for that person as a birthday present. so yes, a really close one and a really good song. thanks for your reaction, as always

    Most believe they were only together 3 months, but it's been mentioned they got back together then broke up multiple times, over 8+ months. In this 10 minute version of, All Too Well, Taylor did for her Swifties, it now includes her 21st birthday lyrics. She was dating Jake G, when she turned 21. But, as this is 13 years later, everyone already knew it was about Jake G. ❤ You should do a reaction to Taylor's ROCK version of "We are Never Getting Back Together" from her 1989 Tour, as it's obvious to many, it's about Jake. Late but I don't think Dylan O''Brien was the right casting choice because he looks younger than his age, and he was literally every girl's teenage crush.
    So instead of seeing the uncomfortable age gap, people see a conventionally attractive man that they had a crush on in a relationship with another conventionally attractive woman and forget their ages.

    • @renyauger4560
      @renyauger4560 Год назад +2

      I think Dylan was a great choice. He looks a lot like Jake G did at that time. Dylan doesn’t have that desperate need to be considered “hip, cool” and a serious actor who was “too sophisticated” for Taylor but he did a great job acting the part of the petulant man child that still is Jake G. I enjoy knowing that on Folklore & Evermore (and other projects) many of his idols he considered “cool” while dismissing her work were eager and happy to collaborate with her on her art. She’s cooler and more of an artist than he will ever be because with he it’s real. He’s a good actor who will never be satisfied with anything. Sad for him, glad for her that she got through it young and used her pain to create art.

    I always thought the song was just about a bad relationship (albeit from from Taylor's perspective), until I read the essay "Me and the Movie Star" (google it), which talks about a young intern's experience with Jake G when he was in his mid-30s. Apparently he is well known for gaslighting and messing with very young, vulnerable women - to the extent that his PR people have to keep covering up for him. What an a-hole!
