    I love when the Sensei says "I don't know what to call this" - because he knows how to use it and how to execute it so and the end of the day it does not matter what its called :)

    Sepai is an interesting kata in that it has a number of unusual techniques including one that uses the unique use of a fist shaped like it would be when one knocks on the door. It seems to be of Chinese origin meaning 18 hands. When performing this kata be prepared to do a lot of circular arm movements and body twisting. Keep up the great work Che Sensei.

    Seipai, a dark side of sanseru. Or two seipais make one sanseru. Or sanchin and seisan make the black jack. Or suparimpei divided by sanchin is sanseru yet again. So enough of maths here. :)

    • @Burvedys

      @@GojuRyuKarateCentre : on a serious note, Goju-ruy is a variation of Baihe-quan in a lineage of Liu Long-gong (Ryu Ruko), to compare to Shu Shiwa's which is Uechi-ryu now. Hence both have original 3, 13, 36 steps/forms of movements in their kata.
      As to sanchin, three is obvious in Baihe-quan: 1) natural thrust (chishi position 1, when you hold it vertically in extended hand); 2) middle block (chishi position 2, when bent in elbow and the weight twists your forearm inside out); 3) a natural fence reaction with palms facing forward (meh, said Okinawans and left only two in sanchin-gata doing it also one-handed because it's not Fujian and they are all brave and tough like archats from Shorin-ryu).
      Seisan is for public demonstration: hence 3 + 10 (no more fingers to count anyway to add something to sanchin).
      Sanseru is also 3 (begins with sanchin-gata) + 10 like in seisan and... oh, they said in the back alleys of Fuzhou, let's double because it will be main kata, lol!
      Suparimpei or pechurin, it's 100 (a lot...) and sometimes these 8 extra because crane kung-fu has a babuilian taolu/kata, too.
      Chojun Miyagi for his Goju-ryu made 18 (seipai) as a half of sanseru (because seisan is a dark, black, soft, ju, yin side of sanseru, which is agressive, punchy, hard, go, yang, and like saifa is a travel-size kururumfa).
      Oh, there was rokkishu (6 forms of palms) which is made to tensho because students had problems with math (Jundokan version makes it back to 6 initial forms while other Ryuha interpretations count to 7, 8 etc. which is lame (you may find some their "missed" palms in seisan, too).
      But what do I know. Mystics and waxing poetic about saints, holly numbers, legendary archats, Buddhism and other sanctuary caca de torro sound more "solid" when explaining numbering, of course. :)

    • @GojuRyuKarateCentre
      @GojuRyuKarateCentre  2 года назад +2

      12 kata, 6 pairs, maybe? My first clear reference to the possible meaning of the numbers were from the Bubishi. 108 sins, meridian points, etc etc
      Numbers seem to play a large role in the martial arts culture - perhaps understanding that will help my dumb ass understand a tiny bit more 🤣

    • @Burvedys
      @Burvedys 2 года назад

      @@GojuRyuKarateCentre : actually, there are 13 kata (randomly in pairs): gekisai (2), sanchin (2), tensho, saifa, kururumfa, sanseru, seipai, shisochin, seiyunchin, seisan, suparimpei. :)
      But other than steps or combinations, they mean nothing (so unpoetic me).
