  • Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) are antimalarial drugs that help with symptoms of autoimmune disease. Unfortunately, LONG TERM use of these medications can cause retinal toxicity and can lead to permanent vision loss. In this video, I review the testing used to screen for plaquenil retinopathy during an eye exam.
NOTE: The risk of of Plaquenil Toxicity is higher when the cumulative dose is over 1000g not mg.

About this video: Do you take a malaria drug such as chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine? These drugs were originally designed to fight malaria but are not often prescribed to help with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and sjogrens disease. Unfortunately, these medications can also have a toxic effect on the body. In this video, Joseph J. Allen OD FAAO from Doctor Eye Health reviews plaquenil side effects and the testing used during a plaquenil eye exam with either your optometrist or ophthalmologist.
