Worked the Railways and the Botany tanneries, saw Frank Hyde in the flesh at the SCG Members on Grand Final Day 1981. I worked with Kerry Burke who played for Souths losing Grand Final side. But every line, every image, from the red rattlers passing Newtown to the Commission flats out west, when rugby league was truly tribal, brings grown men past their prime like myself to tears because we are mourning times gone forever, lost youth. A work of genius.
@@markwatkins6618 Hi, The tannery I worked for at Botany received kangaroo skins by the thousands from pro shooters, maggots and all, and they tanned the skins with a poisonous concoction ending up with a huge pile of finished skins for export, if memory serves. They were stopped due to pollution laws as time passed after a long history going back to the 1860s. I returned to Sydney from the bush and got a job there within two hours of arriving. Very harsh conditions and I was happy to move on to much better things within three months. Cheers
This IS high enough and long enough; and straight between the posts - A must listen to for every Rabbitoh, every Sydneysider in the 70's. Some wonderful images and memories. The Whitlams just get better and better - age isn't wearing them! Tim Freedman and Paul Kelly are the Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson of the 21st century. And really cool that Barrie Freedman featured in the clip - Tim's father!
In an age of hard men playing the hardest game, everyone tipped their cap the John Sattler. The toughest man to ever lace the boots up. The spiritual leader of the club and the embodiment of the game. RIP Satts. Also, who even remembers John Bucknell? I reckon Satts came out on top again ♥
Great cover version of a great song. Should have been a hit the first time round. Good to see Perry in the clip & Johnny Barker covers himself in glory once again, with a superb clip. Glory Glory to South Sydney.
What a great cover of Perry Keyes classic, but the film clip is just awesome, featuring icons of the 70s John Sattler, Frank Hyde, Gough Whitlam, Wrestlers from world championship wrestling and of course Perry himself. Such a wonderful trip down memory lane which brings such geat recollections of my youth.
Love it! What great footage! Sorry to hear about your Dad. Mine also has passed, 18 months ago. Yours had a lovely speaking voice. I saw you in Belgrave late last year. Great show. xx

Great song and great footage. Manly forward John Bucknell did the deed early in the match but O’Neill and Coote squared the ledger later in the first half and Bucknell didn’t return to the field in the 2nd half.
What a wonderful time to be alive before all the crazy 'worldview' changes everyone had to suffer. Those alive today who experienced Livin' in the Seventies know what I mean.
I had to google John Sattler (ex-pat Pom, no interest in sport) but this is still a great track. As usual Tim. You're still a bloody star in my eyes. And was that your dad at the beginning of the video?

How the hell has this song flown under my radar all these years...😲😲😲
Tim Freedman is a first class performer what a fantastic song.
One of Perry Keyes’s best.
sorry Perry Keyes, the original songwriter, has the passion
I follow the Bulldogs, this song brought tears to my eyes. God bless the MAN
What a fantastic tribute and step back in time - the start of the 70's was truly the era to be growing up in.

One of the all-time greats both on and off the field

Love Tim Freedman! my favourite voice and my boys LOVE anything Whitlam's or Tim.
What a great cover. Percy is a genius lyricist and The Whitlams are one of the only bands that could do justice to the original.
Great song and even better film clip - loved it. Thanks!
I’m not crying you’re crying ❤️💚
Fabulous Ballad !!!
Gosh, this is brilliant. Thanks Tim!
Great version and love the guitar solo in the middle of it! Go the Bunnies!

What a terrific tribute, to both the man & the game.
A lovely version of a terrific Perry Keyes' song. And another fine video from Johnny Barker.
Great vocals. Good to see Perry make a cameo appearance.

This man's voice has me liking a Souffs player. Magic
Tim didn't say g'day to Perry Keyes when he passed him at 1:25. The writer of this song. Check his version. I'm sure Tim would agree.
Rest in peace old man
RIP John Sattler 🥲
The man that was the epitome of what wearing the cardinal & myrtle is all about. R.I.P to the legend and gentleman who is John Sattler.

Sport, how incredibly boring and 'macho'.
I love the Whitlams but what a shame Tim uses an American accent... an perrenial Aussie music problem.
