  • Welcome to my "I Walk The Line" Guitar Lesson + Tutorial, by Johnny Cash, where you'll learn how to strum the FULL song start-to-finish.
This song uses 3 easy chord shapes (E A B7) and then it changes key and uses another 3 easy shapes (A D E)... it does this one more time (D G A)... So all-in-all we play 3 easy 3-chord songs in 3 keys!
We will discuss the basic theory, and how to memorize the song, as well as work on all the transitions so we can play the entire complete tune, including the intro, chords, transitions and everything in between!
    "I Walk The Line" CHORDS: E A B7, A D E, D G A
    "I Walk The Line" STRUMMING PATTERN: easy strumming: R-Du R-Du | intermediate strumming: R-Du A-Du (R = Root, A = Alternating Bass note)

    16:58 - FULL SONG PLAY-ALONG
    22:09 - FAREWELL!
The lesson begins with the first verse, using the E, A, B7 chords. We review the chord shapes and strumming patterns which we learned in the previous lesson, and we practice putting them all together.
Then we figure out how to change keys and transpose this song into the key of A, which would use our next three chords, A, D and E. It sounds complicated, but it's a really simple, using the Nashville numbering system, we take the chord shapes, turn them into numbers, and then we take those numbers and turn them into the chord shapes in our new key!
I have this all in a diagram on the worksheet, as well as some graphics in the lesson. It's going to be really easy for you to see it all play out.
Once we practice it in the second key, we work on the transition from verse one, to verse two. Then we learn the third key/third verse, using the D, G and A chords. Once again, we take a close look at the theory, slowly working through it, so that it all makes sense.
Once we've practiced the chords and strumming together, we work on the transition from verse 2 to 3.
At this point we've worked out all the chords, all we have to do is a couple more transitions. The transition from the third verse to the fourth. And then the transition between verse four and five.
Finally, after learning every part of the song, we play through the entire song, start to finish, just like the recording. Hope you enjoy this lesson!

Great lesson. Once I spotted that JC was cycling through different keys while utilising that riff I thought I would never get the hang of it. But then I found you. Thank you!

Fantastisch! Sehr cool because: you show what you do, you ad tabs and chords, teach the strumming, you are singing, in small pieces and all of it together and all of it nice and slowly. I love it!

Excellent! Really like the way you put this all together! Very easy to understand. I love the explanations of the 1-4-5 and key changes and all the graphics are great. I've played guitar for many moons and now do some private teaching the last few years. Really appreciate the effort you put into this. Never tried to play this song until a few weeks ago. Sat down and figured out the basics by ear and I was really intrigued by all the key changes. I'm glad I stumbled upon you lesson. Thank you!

Nice lesson, and a good idea to make it a two-parter, i also really like the metronome in the complete playalong, that helps quite a bit i think
