If you watch that whole Diary of a CEO episode she says she's had backlash for it but then totally doubles down on it. Yes working hard, working efficiently is important but like, someone born in poverty could make the most of every opportunity, be incredibly hard working, work smart not hard and follow all of those slogans, and still not make this amount of money!

Ok I accidently wrote a fucking testament.
We need to understand that even "self-made" billionares get their money from somewhere, that somewhere being, in part, other rich people and companies and businesses. So even if people like Taylor Swift became rich "through their own music", we have to think where does her money come from, and it's certainly not from the fans alone. Who sponsors Taylor's shows? Who does she hire to manage the festivals and events she attends to? Who produces her albums, who works at the record labels, who builds the microphones she uses, her instruments, who manages her public image and propaganda, who works selling her products, in the transportation of her whole team? All these people are responsible for her wealth aswell. No billionaire is self made. That's an illusion.
Look at her shows here in Brasil, as an example. Her team hired a company called Tickets 4 Fun to manage her presentations, a company that has accusations of using slave labour in the organization of Lollapalooza, and that's not even the worst part. A fan died during the show in the Estádio Milton Santos, in Rio de Janeiro, because of the way that T4F organized the whole thing, and other 1000 people passed out. Y'all wanna know what was Taylor's words on that? None. She didn't talk about it. Not even the name of the fan who died, not even a homage, nothing. She and T4F didn't even pay for the transporting of the fan's body, other fans did it. Please, research it. And all that just happened in the name of profit. Taylor profited from these shows, Tickets 4 Fun did aswell. So don't come saying that Taylor is a "different" billionaire. And don't get me wrong, I love her music, I was a really huge fan, trully, but we have to understand that, in the capitalist system, there are no "good billionaires" and Taylor profits from the work (and death) of others the same way that other billionaires do.
But ya know, gonna keep listening to her music lol. Srry for the huge text, and great video aswell! Really liked it :)

Another good example of this is Rihanna. Fenty is co-owned by LVMH. LVMH is in the top 3 of the richest men of the world and it is a known fact he is not ethical.
We have to remember that a lot of, if not most, celebrities / influencers / etc 's business start with the involvement of a big company. The latter is often the one that pitch the products idea to the celebrity.

Taylor donated 1 million to a foundation to support tornado victims in Tennessee. While I think it is admirable, 1 million is a drop in the mf bucket of her being a billionaire. It’s performative at best and tactical at worse (considering it is one of the many places she grew up it’s no surprise she would help) but if I recall she made no donations to the Maui fires, or even to charities beyond ones that she’s “directly” linked to in order to keep the home town girl image up. (Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) but it all just seems so performative, and the swifties would rather have a brown nose and whole ass face than have critical critiques on something that is cut and dry.

The wealthy receive tax breaks for those donations, too - so they aren't even surrendering the amount they seem to be. And for many of them, it's basically transforming cash into PR and it's worth it. Even Bezos donated 120 million in the wake of a scandal.

It's interesting to me as a feminist that feminists leap to defend Swift and idolize her. All criticism of her is dismissed as "misogyny" or "internalized misogyny". While Swift has been targeted by misogyny and the right-wing before, there's more and more evidence of legitimate problems - and those shouldn't be mistaken for sexism. People who are normally good at seeing through unethical systems will defend her despite white feminism, capitalism, and other bad behaviour. It disappoints me to see that many feminists can't shake the celebrity worship of the rich - of Swift and of others, too. Girlboss feminism are parasocial relationships are out of hand.

Just google how she gave 0 f***s to the Brazilian fan who died at her concert (which she lied about saying it happened before her concert). The stadium's air vents were blocked so that people outside couldn't see the performance. People were prohibited from bringing in water bottles, forcing them to purchase overpriced water from the venue. At some point, they ran out of water for sale. Many people fainted. In the midst of a heatwave, their primary concern was profit, not everybody's safety. And Taylor's team not only failed to take action to hold the promoters accountable for what happened but also did nothing to assist the girl's family and instead just tried to downplay the whole thing.

This happened after I filmed this but it was all over my feed! I think that's an interesting separate issue about where the responsibility lies but it does tie into this video I think because Taylor has taken on this sort of goddess status which inherently will at some point lead to some negative outcomes. There's just so much more to consider the bigger a fanbase is, just like with a company as it grows and grows and visibility and traceability across everything becomes less and less.

IDK how much of it Swift was responsible for, but the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. It seemed gross to fake cry over the fan you might've endangered only after a PR nightmare. We are willing to concede that Travis Scott, for instance, was responsible for many concert deaths. But Swift keeps a benign image no matter what.

I knew about Ana (very, very sad) and have heard people saying that Taylor + team is adamant that it "happened before her show." Ok... and? The whole event is her show, Ana was there to see Taylor. Right??
I DID NOT know that they had closed the AIR VENTS to prevent outsiders from getting a peek inside. They know that some (most) of those people outside have supported her in any way that they possibly can but it is impossible for them to afford those ridiculous ticket prices so they punish them for being poor and then punish the ticket payers by essentially suffocating them. That is sickening.
I may be wrong but I don't remember Ariana scrambling around "the Manchester b0mbing happened AFTER my show!" She seemed genuinely wrecked and devastated and suspended her concert then promised her fans that she would return to Manchester for a Benefit... and she did. Bravely. Less than 2 weeks after the attack and raised several million dollars for the survivors/family and friends of the victims.
I 100% understand that these 2 tragedies are hardly comparable. Manchester was a viscous attack of hate + violence where MANY people were harmed/died while Brazil was a tragic but avoidable act of negligence and mother nature but how do you feel about the way the 2 singers responded?
While Ana's death is in no way directly Taylor's fault, her making it known that her death was "before her show," gives me an icky feeling. Like maybe she does feel somewhat responsible but can't admit that without admitting the greed of high cost water/making it impossible for outsiders to experience even the tiniest bit of her tour without paying for tickets. I kind of feel like she is deflecting a little bit by changing the timeline because Ana's friend came out and said that Ana started feeling ill during Sabrina's set but actually passed out during Cruel Summer. So, from what I've read Ana died during Taylor's concert because of the negligent company that was hired by Taylor's team.
I don't think she should have mentioned when Ana passed in her statement... just how she felt, honor Ana and her family and Brazil, etc. Imo, it comes off as her grasping at any kind of control over the narrative as she can.

And her family was already wealth thats why they took her to nashville and invested in her career…yes she is talent but a lot of people are but do not have the same chances….that and bezos getting a help from his parents is the same…one is a singer other not. If people start paying less for her merchandising because she got a lot of money we will see Taylor really persona pop up “why does the new album not get 1million in first week?” Maybe people can not afford no more, or it will in the 6th week….a lot of artists dont get the same sales because the fans honestly can not afford or are not that obssess and can listen on spotify…if that happen to her we will see a different Taylor because she is obsess in keeping the same track for all the years she is here…and that history already teach us….will not happen. Its clear that some billionaires have not fullly deserved their wealth. Fair enough!
    But somethings clearly missing here...
That amount of wealth is not a simple bank balance saying 1 billion+... its invested in assets that further boost the economy. Tell yourself this... if all the billionaires sold their companies and all their assets to give to the needy and to charities, this would have a damaging effect to the economy. The value of the dollar would go down, and many companies will be left in the hands of less experienced people creating a net loss for society and even the poor.
This notion that they dont deserve it and so they should give it away is so oversimplified, it negates basic ecenomic principles!

I tend to take into consideration how many people benefit from the billionaires getting those tax cuts. They don't just take all of that money and stuff it under a big mattress, they usually end up investing it back into their business. Look at how many jobs that have been created and how many people that can pay their bills because of the jobs that have been created by said billionaires. This notion that there should be some kind of cap that would stiffle such growth seems so bizarre to me. Why should I give 2 damns how much money someone else has? Most millionaires and billionaires are 1st generation. How is anyone else somehow entitled to tell them how they should spend it, and probably the better question is, if you had been the one who had generated such wealth, would you really want someone else to have the power to somehow strip you of it and give it to someone who didn't earn it?

    • @007mooo6

There is no hate but, it's the system that we should hate. The richer you get the lesser tax you pay, which lower income people don't get the privilege of.
Being a billionaire gives more power to influence politics and pay their way for influencing laws to keep themselves rich, and ultimately these elaws affect non-rich people. When we have rich people influencing politics, we have more laws that will keep communities underdeveloped and contribute to exploitation.
Everyone deserves to have wealth to spend on something they like, everyone should have a chance to be able to survive without working two jobs. You may think that this is limited to your country, but because billionaires have power in their own country, they have even more power in poorer countries, like mine, where foreign billionaire corporations get away with not contributing to any longterm development to any communities (they do not have to build schools, but guess what, you could help with social development, help the people who are advocating for gender equality laws, and protecting SA victims), or keeping the environment safe. All these millionaires get away with $$$upporting the government.

@007mooo6 Don't get me wrong, cronism I am 100% against. When these corporate billionaires get into bed with these politicians there should be jail time for both. But there has never been a monopoly that hasn't been government facilitated. I wouldn't be opposed to a flat tax across the board for everyone but I also understand why we would want to reward people with tax incentives that do create hundreds if not thousands of ways for other people to make a living. I also think it's presumptive to think that these people don't pay their "fair share". For example, if I pay 20% and that is $10,000 and they only pay 2% but their 2% is $10,000,000, then who is paying more in taxes? You can't just lay all of the burden of taxation on the wealthy, otherwise it stomps out any incentive to work harder, achieve more, and eliminates any desire to create and innovate.

      @DisappearingNightly Месяц назад

@@christinacosty7013 The terms "billionaire" and "greedy billionaire" are functionally the same. Aside from those who inherited their wealth, no one becomes a millionaire without an insane level of greed. Think about it. The idea of a billion is in itself staggering. A million seconds go by in about eleven days. A billion seconds go by in about 31 years. Making millions is a tall task for even the most talented, hard working of people. Making billions? That requires a full on obsession with money. There's just no getting around it. If you've accrued billions, you have assuredly done it at great expense to the world around you.
While it's true that many (perhaps even most) billionaires give away some of their money, it's important to keep some perspective. Again, remember how insanely large a sum of money a billion dollars is. Let's assume your net worth is $100,000, and let's say out of pure kindness you gave someone ten dollars. You would be giving away 0.01% of your net worth. For a billionaire, giving away $100,000 is about like you or I giving someone ten dollars or less. It's a nice gesture, but not exactly a huge sacrifice. Billionaires making large charitable donations is even less impressive given that it's essentially good PR as well as a healthy tax deduction.
The point is that the money that a billionaire rakes in didn't come from nowhere. It inevitably comes from the sweat and toil of others as well as a whole lot of good luck in life, but also, equally inevitably, a lot of just plain old fashioned greed on the part of the billionaire. The fact that they toss a few bones to the peasants doesn't change any of that.

Can you elaborate? I touched on race, gender and class throughout but maybe not explicitly enough? Would love to know your thoughts :)

How exactly? I mean, Taylor Swift is a notorious white feminist who is insanely privileged in every single other way except gender.

Maybe, the thing is: more woman should be billionaires.

But how would they become billionaires? If they get there through the same methods of exploitation, is that actually good?
Considering that if they are in industries like fashion for example, and go by business as usual in fast fashion, they'll end up exploiting tonnes of women in the Global South to create the products that make them billionaires.
I'd prefer no billionaires and more successful women in general. But this level of wealth is ridiculous.

No, the thing is: no one should be billionaires

And this is the problem with "girlboss"-type feminism ... it focuses on money and power without questioning how they are used. We shouldn't close women off from power, but we need to completely rebuild all social systems.

It's an illusion to believe or want there to be no billionaires. You might have many more people, but this wealth level will never cease. When you see yourself in a society that has a lot of equality, then it's because everyone is poor - and a much larger hand is profiting from you. @@greenstockingsociety
