I work in a second-hand bookshop here in the States, and we see lots of these from time to time. Had a copy of The Nest not long ago: it sold for around $30 American. Grady Hendrix is so popular around these parts that we order his books new!
Thanks, that's really interesting. I haven't mentioned in the video about the other books Grady has authored. The Nest looked like one of the better ones.
It's important to note that a big part of the value is driven by the absolutely stunning cover artwork and disposable nature of these books, most weren't collected at the time, were sold next to the tabloids at grocery stores and were printed on cheap paper, so they're rare to come across in any condition.
I've read Hendrix book and loved it from the start - such a great humour. Even got myself a pretty solid collection out of those titles. They're so hard to find for a good price nowadays, Hendrix even said he felt guilty for starting the hype and all the YT Channel made it even more a thing. Starting the reissues was his way of saying sorry and bringing the back for a new generation. Really great stuff!
Thanks Steven. It's funny but it's a good thing these books have been highlighted in Paperbacks From Hell so copies aren't just thrown away. If you started picking these up five or more years ago you'd have done well. It's a lot more expensive nowadays.
My gosh , i have seen much of these . Alas i left them on the shelves( not being a fan of that type of story . And some of the stories were the pits) Now the book have the last laugh on me. Why did not grab them, even if i may never read . Now people have wised up an are re thinking their cheap/ free bins. JB , i had some of the books, but got rid of them...😢.Sigh.....Thanks( i wont blame the messanger) for the show.
Thanks Sylvan. I reckon we've all been there and has some of these through our hands....then let them go. I certainly have. It's ok though and we now have yet another kind of book to look for.
Never really got into horror, mostly because of reading a Pan short story book & one involved being buried alive - it really played on my mind for years. Crazy that people are willing to pay over £50 for a beaten up paperback. Horses for courses I guess.
Personally I don't even rate a lot of the American cover art, ours (British) tends to be far superior and in an awful lot of cases far more horrific. Lot of yanks I speak to are after the Brit covers rather than their own editions. Zebra stuff is OK but it's not quite got that bite, no pun intended.
funny how you would glibly pass by these horror pbs stacked usually together on the shelves of the likes of W H Smith & John Menzies............if someone had told you back then they would be valuable one day you would have directed them to the nearest rubber room !
It's true, no one really saved or collected these titles, at least not unless you were really into the genre. It's just incredible what these are making nowadays.

It's true, although I can remember seeing these in my independent bookshop back in the day. The mainstream stores never really touched them though.
Another great topic and video, Jules!
Thanks Bob🙂

Understood. The Pan horror are a league of their own. I loved them growing up and still have a few nightmare memories of some stories 🙂

Understood. Maybe it's best to just collect the best covers from either side of the Atlantic.
