I would certainly like to learn how to make one of these from total scratch. Start with observing planets and making calculations on their size, then doing the math to make the scale model, casting the brass plates

Surprisingly, designs like this date back to Ancient Rome/Greece. Look at the Antikythera mechanism, for instance. The ability to calculate the motion of the planets and stars were very important to a people who viewed them with such reverence

@@liudehua5742 no, it’s false. tidal locking does occur in other systems though, like the earth and its moon. but not all planets are tidally locked.

If you magnetized and rotated the metal ball of van de graaff generator and then threw small balloons at metal ball, you can potentially create a fractal solar system due to large rotating electric field and magnetic field causing balloons to gain charge and orbit the metal ball. Because charged objects move right angles to the rotating magnetic field. Also humidity likely needs to be very low for it to work.

I think the planets are going the wrong way though. The planets orbit the Sun in a counterclockwise direction as viewed from above the Sun's north pole.

I used to collect it, but..
I collected 52 magazines over the course of a year when I was 12 for this exact solar system... Finished it, built it, 4 days later brushed against it by accident and pluto vanished into thin air 😢 why where they only held in place by little pins and not threaded ones 😔 *sigh*

A quick google search says
"All of the planets in the Solar System orbit the Sun in the same direction as the Sun's rotation, i.e. anticlockwise, looking from above the Sun's north pole"
and
"if you look at the solar system from its north pole, then you will see all the planets orbiting the Sun counter clockwise and rotating on their axis counterclockwise, except for Venus and Uranus. Venus rotates clockwise while Uranus rolls on its side as it orbits the Sun"
TLDR; No, all "planets" orbit the same, but Uranus' individual rotation is "sideway" relative to the others.

No. If you make an exception for pluto, where does it end, what about Eris? A discussion was had what constitutes a panet and Eris and Pluto didn't make the cut, they are dwarf planets that will not be represented generally.
