This must be the best reaction to any song I have ever watched! The surprise followed by the genuine excitement... I remember feeling the same way the first time I heard Stromae. I’m looking forward to your next reactions to his other songs
I totally agree! I loved the way you let every aspect of the song come in and expressed what it provoked. This is exactly how I experience Stromae's music and video's, they dive deep.
Being French, I’m just amazed at how quick you react to that song and singing to the melody so quick. Just proof of how powerful music can be cross border and cross language barriers!
I never usually watch reaction videos, but Stromae has a special place in my heart. Loved this video, particularly how you paused and replayed every bit that intrigued you and explained your thought process as you went. This will probably get lost in the comments, but just in case you find it useful: Fils de joie is pronounced 'feece duh jwah'. Literally, 'son of joy'; it's a play on words from a euphemism commonly used to refer to prostitutes ('fille de joie' = girls of joy/pleasure).
More than "girls of joy", fille de joie could be translate by "daughters of joy". So "son of joy" is a dobble play on words on his statut of son of (daughter of) joy. At the end of thé song, Stromae says "Je suis un fils de pute, comme ils disent" it's translate by "I'm a son of whore, as they said". "Pute" is an other french word for sexual worker, so Stromae says again he's e son of a sexual worker but "fils de pute" is also a injuring expression translate by "son of a bitch" ! In the french text, Stromae use this play on words to express the two sens of the expression. Worderful song ans worderful artist
Stromae is like a PhD of the music he doesn't sing little pop songs with no content, every single of his songs has a meaning behind it, I watched so many reactions and everytime people fail, they just not use to seeibg a music videos that actually covers an important issue
Reactors don’t “fail”. Our assignment is to react, not to please you as just one viewer of millions. Perhaps you should give reacting a go, you clearly know more than we do.
@@TeddyGreyOS I don't think you "failed" at all. As you say, there is no "failing" in a reaction. But also, you got it, you figured it out - I was impressed. And you were as blown over as I was. Longtime fan here, missed him so much. Make sure you see Santé, the version that aired on Jimmy Fallon. Also his collaboration with Jamel where they break down one Alors On Danse. Oh yes, in the video the president was not him - the woman speaking at the start with the curled braid on her head is the president.
The visuals in my opinion represent how he as a son sees his mom as a hero and as such she is being buried as a national hero in this fictional country
Listening to a Stromae song is like examining a Dali painting… it’s genius on so many levels and it demands that you take time to understand (or try to)what the artist wanted to portray.
Great reaction!! Just a little info, after almost 8 years of absence, Stromae released a new album 'Multitude' with very interesting songs characterised with the use of all kind of (relatively) unknown instruments of all over the world. He wanted the listener not to be able to put a finger on what it is, and where the sounds are coming from (Asian, African, Latin American,...), a multitude of sounds... Concerning the vid, this was all filmed at Brussels (Parc de Cinquantenaire), with actually a big crowd and of course some CGI. He cooperated with the Belgian National Orchestra (leaded by Dirk Brossé) to have an original sound (cello, harpsichord), instead of all around synthesizer. The result is an amazing sound blend, like you say Slash/Slash/Slash composition. If you wanna listen and react to more (crazy) Stromae songs, try 'Quand C'est' (sounds like cancer, and talks about the disease), 'Papatouai' (about the absence of a father) and 'Carmen' (about social media addiction). Have fun, and greetings from Belgium.
Stromae is Belgian and half Rwandan. His vocals have a close resemblance to Jacques Brel but he also adds African beats. It's so unique. Fils de joie means son of joy. This is a very popular video of his that you may also enjoy. It's about losing his father in the Rwandan genocide ruclips.net/video/oiKj0Z_Xnjc/видео.html
I think this song is more about fathers who are absent, they make children and disappear, leaving the child with questions and an empty feeling of missing his father growing up. I am French and this is how we understand this song, the title actually means « Papa où t’es ? » which is a familiar way to say « Dad where are you ? » The lyrics explain « Everybody know how to make babies but no one knows how to make daddies » Stromae said he barely knew his father and this is not related to the genocide, even if he did die during the genocide.
LMHO! THIS WAS LITERALLY ME TWO HOURS AGO WHEN I STUMBLED ON THIS SONG AND REALISED STROMAE WAS BACK!!! He's such an extraordinary talent tbh...words don't even do him justice!
I don’t know if a similar comment has been posted about this before but I feel like one of the most impressive things about this song (and all his songs tbh) is the emphasis Stromae puts on pronunciation. Even though I’m French, it took me a couple of replays to really notice it. Take the French lyrics, and you’ll notice how harsh the pronunciation is when Stromae speaks with the voices of the client, the pimp, and the policeman. When he speaks to the people who look down on his mum, the tone is still harsh, but as the son talks to his mother, everything is much softer, smoother. Anyway, I loved your genuine reaction to this incredible song!
This is probably the best reaction I've ever seen. You took the time to consider everything, going back for the rhythm, the music and the lyrics. You tried to figure the meaning of the song without jumping to conclusions, but without giving up on meaning either. And you actually got into it. Stromae is all about dancing, beside everything amazing he puts in his music and visuals, there's always a strong beat and a strong physical involvement. And you were so into it that you were actually dancing.
You are such a smart person, the way you figured the different points of view he is singing from while not a francophone shows great empathy and imagination, subbed and put on notifications. Great reaction, Stromae is the pride of Rwanda(my country) Africa, Belgium, Europe and the whole of the francophone world .
It's so enjoyable as a french speaker to see someone who understand the power of the words used in this songy. I mean you can clearly see on his reactions all those feelings & emotions Stromae is able to put in each sentences.
Stromae the genius. And the fact that your reaction is so intense even if you don't speak french tells a lot about this man's pure talent. Can't wait for your next Stromae React.
This is so far the best reaction to this song I've seen. Love how you took your time actually trying to understand the lyrics and not afraid to go back and run it again. Cheers
bro as an albanian i’ve always loved stromae he’s very talented react to more songs of him,Formidable is a masterpiece, papautai is a masterpice to i want more from him ❤️
Its a tribute to sexworkers. Its from the perspective of a customer, a pimp and then a police. In the chorus its from a perspective of a son of a sexworker. Thanks for a great reaction.
Verlan (verlan = l'envers = revers) is a type of argot in the French language, featuring inversion of syllables in a word, and is common in slang and youth language. so "stromae" mean "maestro" in verlan !!
@@ArthurRainbow Because at this point, you can imagine how many people have pointed it out… since the thumbnail of this very video now shows the Belgian flag I think it’s safe to say anybody telling me he’s not French at this point isn’t attentive enough to be giving out information at all 👀😂
the rythm that he used as a reference to make this music is Brazilian Funk, huge in Brazil more then pop or rap, being created in the poor areas of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
i had so much fun watching your reaction to this !! as a French speaker i love his lyrics and obviously love his whole work cause everything is so calculated and perfect !!! peace
Just accidentally came to your page, I am french living in Miami for over 20 years and it is amazing to hear you express your artistry and emotions while not even knowing/understanding the language. And this is WHAT music is supposed to do, to make you uncomfortable and yet so relatable to the energy behind each notes, and makes you want to have more and dip into that psyche to evolve your creativity, psyche and understanding of selfish expression while having an understanding oof the Art. Bravo. Just subscribed Much love
Stromae always speaks in French, he said he can express himself this is better which I'm glad we have enough English singers in the world, Stromae is just different class to everyone else, his music always covers an important issue and has meaning behind it, he doesn't sing no content song
The different verses are from the perspective of a pimp, a cop, a john and so on. The refrain is from the perspective of the sexworkers son. Take a look at his songs " l'enfer" about mental health and "tous les memes" where he sings from the perspective of both man and woman with a amazing video. He always mixes amazing videos and music with real gritty lyrics
This song is an art master class… the yardstick of artistry, the epitome and zenith of creativity.. The excellence, honor and virtue that flows from this song transcends inspiration. I just discovered Stromae today and I am inspired to be the greatest I can be in my field, atleast am no musician coz you just can’t come after him. This is a king god archangel piece of glorious art.
Brazilian funk + Afro beat + that instrument in the beginning 😩😩😩 + all the instruments in between …I just can’t handle it…. Your reaction is doooooooope!!!
To catch a glimpse of the genius that is Stromae, you could check out his previous tour "Racine Carrée" (translates to Square Root). Full concert is available on RUclips. Highly recommended, not only for the great music, but also the visuals, lighting, ... the whole package. ruclips.net/video/eOZLDQm9c2E/видео.html
First time watcher. I appreciate your respect very much. A lot of your reactions I’ve had. I honestly cried for almost every song just because it was so creative. I NEEDED THIS.
nice reaction. actually he's from Belgium and he, Stromae ( Maestro) has many more great theme songs. check his other songs he's a genious in his lyrics and instrumentation.
Don't worry, he's an alien to the French speaking world too ;) His sound, his lyrics, his actual ability to sing and his showmanship in his concerts are amazing! I suggest that you check out his friend Orel San too.
I fucking love your immediate and honest reactions! You react exactly the same way as I did the first time I heard this track and I cant stop smiling listening to you being amazed by this inctedible artist 😄
Your reaction is the best I've seen on the internet, you give your opinion, decipher the meaning of the song and your reactions are sincere and quite enjoyable to watch. Really a great video. I hope you will react to other Stromae songs in the future.
I think he's just hooked you in - he is amazing!! The lyrics, the music, the emotion, YES the vocals and the sheer artistry of the visual - he is ...as you say inspiring, and with the lyrics translated from French and how much is lost in translation...makes you wish you knew exactly what the message really is... I don't speak a lick of FRENCH but I love Stromae and I know you will continue to be impressed - check out his earlier masterpieces - CARMEN, TOUS LES MEMES, FORMIDABLE there are so many-too many- and SANTE and ENFER from the new Album - and I'll watch you just get lost in his work!. Great review!
I am belgian, like this songer Stromae (Maestro if you inverse the letters). Very famous and talentued artist. Our little country is so proud of him. You should hear other songs from him.
I love stromae, I love his words, I love your reaction and your words... è così bello, I'm Italian he's Belgian and you're British and yet we vibrate together in this.. masterpiece
I'm french and great fan of Stromae and it was interesting to see you discovering and reacting to his singular talent. I had the same pleasure 12 years ago when I eared him the first time with "alors on danse". Thank you for sharing that.
I love his reaction, I can soooo relate to this. I don’t think people actually get how clever, empathetic and just how genius stromae is. And to see his whole body react to this is soooo me. Great to see Regards from Denmark, BIG stromae fan
I don't need to tell you how much I appreciate Stromae. I am just like everyone else here. I do love love your reaction to this! It feels so real and primal and much like my own.
Stromae is a genius, and I think the word you were looking for is Poetry. His music is nothing short of true poetry in music form. Tackling so many topics, from being the son of an immigrant to the loss of his father at an early age, he does it with such style and such art that I am always blown away, always! He was asked if he would ever do English music, and he said he does not speak it well enough to really say what he wants to say the way he likes to say it. He is a genius, I say again, and everyone should immerse themselves in the amazing beats and rhythms of Stromae. He is Belgian, by the way.
so i'm french , so here some more context : usualy stromae is consider one of the greatest text writter in france (parolier in french , and when msot of your music cultur is based on the use of incredebly well put french , that is not a low think to say ) he praticly never directly talk of something always a perspective to play around words . the fiest part is a client , the chorus the son, the thuman traficker , and then the police man . on a note of the spacing , if u could understand french ,and have some kind of knowledge on how we write shit , the simple agencemnt and tythm will go from suepr cool , to a fucking masterpiece (the the rhyme in alternance to speed up without changing the tempo , the fluditidy of subject everything )
@@depassage5202 we Belgians know this. Stromae (Wikipedia) Paul Van Haver (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈpɔu̯l vɑn ˈɦɑvər]; born 12 March 1985), better known by his stage name Stromae (French pronunciation: [stʁɔmaj][1]), is a Belgian singer-songwriter, rapper and musician. He is mostly known for his works in the genre of the hip hop and electronic music. Stromae came to wide public attention in 2009 with his song "Alors on danse" (from the album Cheese), which became a number one in several European countries. In 2013, his second album Racine carrée was a commercial success, selling 2 million copies in France[2] alone and nearly 600,000 units elsewhere.[citation needed] The main singles from the album include "Papaoutai" and "Formidable". He has sold over 8.5 million records worldwide.
@@petervandyck8319 Sorry I know all this, I was just teasing you🙂. I'm a bit tired with reading all those comments (since 2009) about Stromae being Belgian and not French. 😅 I can understand it's very important for you, Belgian people 👍. It's just that sometimes I feel it's a bit too much 😅. Most of the people know about his nationality, and for those who don't know, well, I don't think they really care. To them it's just about enjoying his music. And when some say "French singer" (specially in English speaking countries), they don't necessarily mean French as a nationality but French as a language. I think Belgian people could relax a bit about that. 🤷♀️ Stromae is first a human being, an artist. He happens to be Belgian, yes, for sure, but also European, and some see him as a Rwandan (ask someone in Kigaki) and an African. It's like everybody wants a piece of him... I feel there's a lot of appropriation in all this... But he doesn't belong to anybody. He's mainly himself. 🙂
You touch a Genius in music. Stromae is closed to perfect music. Especially if you understand french language. It is Always a pleasure to see how he plays around with words and the end result is crazy. Thank you and you will Never hear anything like Stromae 🎉🎉🎉

Honestly, one of the better reaction videos I've seen. I have listened to this song a lot myself, but the insights you give are... Surprising! This is why people who normally listen to other genres can really give you a new a clear insight into the music you are used to. I'm happy you liked it and I hope you will try and discover more of his music! Cheers
The maestro f yeah ! It's great seeing your reactions to his vocals XD Stromae really is an original and all around great artist, check out more of his song you won't be disappointed .
Loved your reaction! It was great to see how blown away you were by an artist you'd never even heard of before, and impressive that you immediately understood that he expressed different persons' perspectives. It will be a pleasure to see you discover more from him!
Stromae is the reversed form of the word Maestro 😌 it means : "a master, usually in art. An eminent composer, conductor, or teacher of music." And he is a Maestro indeed ! ♥️ Oh and although he speaks french, he is half Belgian (born there) half Rwandan.
"fils de joie" means word by word "son of joy" BUT it comes from the ancient french "fille de joie" that means "b*tch" SO he played with the words so kinda create this expression "fils de joie" that means "fils de p*te" or "son of a b*tch"😊
Stromae's music is so good, I think Fils de Joie is an excellent starting point for a new listener. His humanization of things like sex-work and work that others consider to be demeaning is honestly one of the most incredible takes I've seen from such a popular artist, especially considering how women are treated in the music scene. I've been listening to him for maybe 5/6 years now, and I would love to see more of your reactions to his songs. I strongly encourage you to check out Tous les Memes and Papaoutai.
This reaction is so good, honestly I'm so impressed at the depth of your comprehension of the lyrical content from first listen. Loved your excitement throughout, too. Excited to watch your other reactions.

Stromae is unmatched!
Thank you for that detail! I was wondering why that was done! Was it for emotional gravitas or intentional?? An artist is always intentional! (:
It was intentional, all the crowd cried out 'Eh Oh!" at the end with him, but then only the sex workers sang 'She's a hero' with him, and then no one sang anything else with him after that.
HOLY SHIT. Thank you for pointing this out! Merci beaucoup! Bedankt! Danke schön, Love From Belgium! LFB!

Stromae is not French; he is a French speaking Belgian
Belgian speaking French
Flanders=the Netherlands
Belgian is not a language bruh
@@burger_flipper That's what he said, a French speaking person that happens to be Belgian.
@@burger_flipper he said "France" that's the reason of the comment ;p
I love that you got him... Stromae is a manifestation of high philosophical beauty. Pure poetry itself 🔱
That was like me watching for the 1st time, thank you, from chile 🇨🇱👏....actually the are various points of view minus the woman itself
C'est génial de voir la réaction de personne venant d'autre pays, stromae est un maitre dans la musique !! Je vous donne le Bonjour de la france !!!
Fils de joie should be better translated with context as fils de joie is a referance for fille de joie which is a synonym for whore
@@anabelle1508
In the same time fils de joie is a référence to filles de joie ( prostitutes)
@@mailen7341 oh cool. I didn't know that!
LMHO! THIS WAS LITERALLY ME TWO HOURS AGO WHEN I STUMBLED ON THIS SONG AND REALISED STROMAE WAS BACK!!!
He's such an extraordinary talent tbh...words don't even do him justice!
Discover and just enjoy the Maestro Stromae, he’ll take you to an endless journey…! He’s unique!! 🤩💕🤩
Even for frenchs /belgians stromae has quite a unique sound and videos.
Fun fact stromae name is from the word maestro.
The fact that this works so well in english is astounding, even though some things get lost in translation.
This is so far the best reaction to this song I've seen. Love how you took your time actually trying to understand the lyrics and not afraid to go back and run it again. Cheers
Welcome to Stromae, my friend. Get used to auditory, visual and emotional goosebumps in every song! Go down the rabbit hole, you won’t regret it.
Also, read his bio.
Also, note his choreography! Video to video. His style is eye Candy
You pick up ideas so quickly and put them so eloquently. I’m enjoying your critique almost as much as I enjoyed Stromae’s song 😁
bro as an albanian i’ve always loved stromae he’s very talented react to more songs of him,Formidable is a masterpiece, papautai is a masterpice to i want more from him ❤️
That’s amazing bro 👏🏼 Definitely got more Stromae coming soon, I’m very impressed!
Its a tribute to sexworkers. Its from the perspective of a customer, a pimp and then a police. In the chorus its from a perspective of a son of a sexworker. Thanks for a great reaction.
Verlan (verlan = l'envers = revers) is a type of argot in the French language, featuring inversion of
syllables in a word, and is common in slang and youth language. so "stromae" mean "maestro" in verlan !!
So proud of our country 🇧🇪 a real artist !
More Stromae reactions coming soon! I’m glad he gives you pride in your country 👏🏼
I'm amazed the first comment is not stating that he's not French but Belgian
@@ArthurRainbow Because at this point, you can imagine how many people have pointed it out… since the thumbnail of this very video now shows the Belgian flag I think it’s safe to say anybody telling me he’s not French at this point isn’t attentive enough to be giving out information at all 👀😂
Our greatest artist since Jacques Brel.
@@ArthurRainbow he is rwandese but the music was directed to a Belgian
the rythm that he used as a reference to make this music is Brazilian Funk, huge in Brazil more then pop or rap, being created in the poor areas of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
i had so much fun watching your reaction to this !! as a French speaker i love his lyrics and obviously love his whole work cause everything is so calculated and perfect !!!
Bravo. Just subscribed
Much love
The song is called "the son of joy" how buitifull is that ! Genius Stromae
"They" don't do things differently, HE does :) Each of his songs are a whole concept where you can keep on digging further!
I never get bored of people discovering Stromae, he's such a great artist and down to earth person
Best reaction to this song so far by far.
*Stromae - Papaoutai* REACTION ⤵️
ruclips.net/video/0sTJh8utdQs/видео.html
Fun fact: Stromae used the title fils de joie or child of joy, while in fact the joy here refers to the sex worker. you know, sex worker - joy.
Stromae always speaks in French, he said he can express himself this is better which I'm glad we have enough English singers in the world, Stromae is just different class to everyone else, his music always covers an important issue and has meaning behind it, he doesn't sing no content song
U should check out more of stromae
Check out Samson - A quick word...😊👍👍
@@benedictus7081 Yes, "fille de joie" means prostitute, so "fils de joie" is like son's prostitute.

I'm french and great fan of Stromae and it was interesting to see you discovering and reacting to his singular talent.
I had the same pleasure 12 years ago when I eared him the first time with "alors on danse".
Thank you for sharing that.
Jure, la plupart de nous ecoutait "alors on danse" comme premiere chanson de stromae
The best about this music is that the beat and kinda the rhythm that he used was really inspired by the well known brazilian funk.
I love his reaction, I can soooo relate to this. I don’t think people actually get how clever, empathetic and just how genius stromae is. And to see his whole body react to this is soooo me. Great to see
Regards from Denmark, BIG stromae fan
😂stromae,that's how he is😉
I really enjoyed your reaction
He is just one giant mind boggle after another I feel 😩😂 thank you for your comment my friend, always appreciated 🙏🏼

Best most genuine reaction of this song that i have come across so far.
Stromae is great, pls do more reactions on him 🔥ur reactions are as always awesome 🔥
Big song. Big up respect for mothers enduring what some have to endure.
so i'm french , so here some more context :
usualy stromae is consider one of the greatest text writter in france (parolier in french , and when msot of your music cultur is based on the use of incredebly well put french , that is not a low think to say )
he praticly never directly talk of something always a perspective to play around words .
the fiest part is a client , the chorus the son, the thuman traficker , and then the police man .
on a note of the spacing , if u could understand french ,and have some kind of knowledge on how we write shit , the simple agencemnt and tythm will go from suepr cool , to a fucking masterpiece (the the rhyme in alternance to speed up without changing the tempo , the fluditidy of subject everything )
And Paul Van Haver aka Stromae has Belgian Nationality
Une excellente explication.
@@petervandyck8319
Really? 🙃
@@depassage5202 we Belgians know this.
Stromae (Wikipedia)
Paul Van Haver (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈpɔu̯l vɑn ˈɦɑvər]; born 12 March 1985), better known by his stage name Stromae (French pronunciation: [stʁɔmaj][1]), is a Belgian singer-songwriter, rapper and musician.

Sorry I know all this, I was just teasing you🙂.
I'm a bit tired with reading all those comments (since 2009) about Stromae being Belgian and not French. 😅
I can understand it's very important for you, Belgian people 👍.
Stromae is first a human being, an artist.
Verse 1: a client
Verse 2: a pimp
Verse 3: a polieman
Chorus: the son
You touch a Genius in music. Stromae is closed to perfect music. Especially if you understand french language. It is Always a pleasure to see how he plays around with words and the end result is crazy. Thank you and you will Never hear anything like Stromae 🎉🎉🎉
This is what i can call "Total art" : Visuals, music and lyrics ... what ever you watsh, there is art!

Stromae is the reversed form of the word Maestro 😌 it means : "a master, usually in art. An eminent composer, conductor, or teacher of music."
And he is a Maestro indeed ! ♥️
Oh and although he speaks french, he is half Belgian (born there) half Rwandan.
"fils de joie" means word by word "son of joy"
BUT
it comes from the ancient french "fille de joie" that means "b*tch"
SO he played with the words so kinda create this expression
"fils de joie" that means "fils de p*te" or "son of a b*tch"😊
I hope he gets the recognition he deserves in US/UK. One of the best artists in the world.
This is the best « Fils de joie » reaction on RUclips! Spontaneous, well analyzed, listens with respect and curiosity.
Yes, this reaction was wonderful and similar to mine
maintenant imagine que sa 'mère' est comme son 'pays' .. La signification est encore plus forte, sa 'mère patrie' comme on dit en France ;)
