- In Georgia, beginning on July 1st, the poor who can't afford bail will be stuck in jail for minor, non-violent charges since Governor Brian Kemp signed SB63 into law, a Republican-backed bill expanding the use of cash bail.
This bill restricts charitable bail funds, one of the only lifelines low-income residents have in these situations.
Organizations like The Bail Project provided free bail assistance to hundreds of people, but now will cease their operations in the state because of this new law.
Jeremy Cherson, the Director of Communications for the Bail Project spoke with Roland Martin about this absolutely stunning move by Georgia Republicans.

I was locked up for a non violent crime I did not commit for a year. Case was dismissed. Judge would not give a bond. Lost everything while in jail. No compensation. They need programs like this!!!

I think they are talking about non violent offenders. Sone are in there for traffic violations or failed to show up for court and some are behind on probation fees. I would rather see them out picking up litter and mowing some disabled or senior lawn than sitting in jail doing nothing.

This sounds unconstitutional to bar a non-profit from putting up bail. It may be construed as a method to prevent an incarcerated population from making it to the polling place.

This will affect the black community more and the right knows this, but the solution is, don't do the crime, because you will do the time. We have to get out of this cycle. That little fantasy sounds really good. However, there's people who have been in prison for 30 or 40yrs for crimes they never committed. Everyone, the arresting officer(s), prosecutors, judges, and the private prisons knew that these people were innocent.

I’m sorry I’m a victim and the person who victimized me got out on lenient bail reform in Illinois a blue state and committed more crimes while out…and let’s be real most of them ain’t in there for unpaid traffic tickets and failure to register a car..I live in STL MO right over the bridge from IL…I’m in a red state and people here been getting out on bail reform and then go commit more crimes especially BM killing BW. We need to have honest conversations about crime in the community and have some damn accountability.
Yes, we do but l think they need to look at each case per crime committed and while they are in jail should be doing some sort of community service like picking up litter and mowing lawns for seniors and the disabled.
