It was really interesting to see an Americans response. When you are talking about funding, the system is supposedly very different here to the US. Our political parties are banned from taking money from any organisation that they make decisions about. So if someone contributed to their political campaign they can't then participate in any vote that relates to that companies interests, in our House of Commons (house of representatives). Note no company can really contribute (individuals can) without questions being raised by our press and ethics boards. Of course there are background deals (particularly the more right wing the organisation/party). But we are very strong when it comes to allowing any politician (or even anyone related to them) being involved in raising an issue that they want the House to have a vote on. Or even being involved in discussions about an issue they have a personal financial interest in. The UK's system is still nowhere near ideal at all. But our representatives aren't even allowed to take the piss when it comes to claiming money for genuine personal expenses. A very different system. It's so far removed from the US, I'm so so sorry for you all (sorry for sounding patronising as fuck too). Don't anyone think I'm singing the praises of the UK system. Very far from. We are completely reliant on our state funding of systems such as health care. So that even the slightest leaning of people in power toward their own self interests can completely desecrate our systems. But still I am so thankful to live In a country where the ethos is automatic provisions for the poor, even when those provisions are being stretched beyond all recognition. Like with our current government.
