    Another good video, thanx. So how do I know which foam company makes quality foam, whether urethane, talalay, memory, gel or whatever?

    • @BeducationMattress
      @BeducationMattress  Год назад

      "Quality" is a quite subjective and non-specific term, often described as the ability of a product to perform the task expected of it. And expectations will of course vary by the individual. Most flexible polyurethane foam companies produce a myriad of foams for many different purposes and durabilities, with some being proprietary blends at the request of specific clients, and some will have unique foams of their own creation with specific properties and characteristics. As a layperson, you'll never expect to find a complete listing of all of the products that foam pourers produce. If you were a manufacturer of a product requiring a specific type of foam, at that point you'd be able to get a better idea of the offerings of a specific company if you were meeting with them about a potential supplier relationship. Generally, the easiest way most consumers rate the "quality" of a foam is by learning the density of that foam, with higher density flexible polyurethane foams generally having a better durability than their lower density counterparts.

    Thank you for sharing these videos. Very informative and to the point.
    I think if you could somehow find a way to share your knowledge on Reddit (there're probably some communities that would welcome this type of content) and promote your channel there a little bit, you'd get a lot more views and would be able to help more people.

    I just bought a gel/ memory foam hybrid from sealy and kinda like you reading “I got a headache “ along with mental fog, shortness of breath , and allergies. I’m thinking it’s because the bed is made with toxic materials. Do you have any suggestions??

    • @BeducationMattress
      @BeducationMattress  Год назад +1

      Your question is more appropriately something you should direct toward a health care professional. Maybe you have a sensitivity to something in the mattress, maybe not. Only a trained health care professional will be able to help you make that determination (oddly enough, your symptoms seem to be quite consistent with something else that seems to be going around these days: health-study.joinzoe.com/post/the-20-symptoms-of-covid-19-to-watch-out-for?_ga=2.261802573.1725488168.1670246732-1626835851.1651670506 .)
      As for the mattress being made with toxic materials, those wouldn't tend to be materials that are classified as toxic - see here: www.ecfr.gov/current/title-16/chapter-II/subchapter-C/part-1500
      and here: www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CFR-2010-title16-vol2/pdf/CFR-2010-title16-vol2-sec1500-135.pdf .
      Hopefully you'll feel better soon!

    I liked your comments about the phase change material and heat dispersion (5:28). I've often thought the same thing about expensive, high-tech "cooling" mattress covers. How is cooler even measured? I doubt they are doing real-world temperature measurements of actual people in bed on top of sheets and mattress pads.

    • @BeducationMattress
      @BeducationMattress  2 года назад

      When testing for the effectiveness of a heat transfer conductive material, an accurate and reproduceable constant will generally be used (some sort of device that's able to consistently create a specified range of temperatures), versus a human subject (which is of course incredibly variable). Testing with real people is used, not only for evaluations of effectiveness, but also for the subjective reactions that can't be derived from steel and electronic measuring devices. Testing facilities can use industry-derived standards such as ASTM International E1225-20, or can use their own standards that they've created, and can also test based upon specific parameters that the suppliers or manufacturers have specified, so that they may objectively compare the effectiveness of their creations. You can quite often glean this information by reading through patents for these materials or inventions. Unfortunately, most manufacturers aren't as transparent when marketing claims such as, "X Times Cooler", and don't tend to be to specific as to what is being compared and how those comparisons were evaluated. Overall, encapsulated phase change materials, combined with certain minerals, can offer some improved heat conduction. Increased airflow seems to be one of the most effective things when attempting to create a more "neutral" sleeping environment.

    Hi. I need some documents on how produce memory foam if possible.

    • @BeducationMattress
      @BeducationMattress  3 года назад +1

      I don't have any specific documents on the complete production of visco-elastic memory foam, as that is information that foam pourers would guard quite closely, as the information would be proprietary.
      However, you can gather quite a bit of general information by doing patent searches. Here is one from Bayer: patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/23/bd/e1/da91d2f02573ec/WO2013163143A1.pdf . Again, the information here will be more generalized, but it can give you quite a bit of context as to how these foams are produced.
      In an overly simplified state, this is a mixture of a polyol, an isocyanate, and water. Here's a paper on adjusting the properties of visco-elastic foam: www.pu-additives.com/product/pu-additives/downloads/adjustments-of-physical-properties.pdf .
      This document from the Polyurethane Foam Association speaks a bit to the production process: www.pfa.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/InTouch_v11.1.pdf .
      I hope that information is helpful!

    Do the gel increases .density durability .... Sir

    • @BeducationMattress
      @BeducationMattress  2 года назад

      The answer is...it depends. The term "gel" covers a wide array of products (see section 5.9 here for some definitions of gel www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1351/PAC-REC-10-06-03/html), and their formulations within polyfoam (I'm assuming you're asking about adding gel to polyfoam versus a separate comfort layer of a buckling column gel) are extremely varied. Speaking very generally, adding "larger" scrap gel particles to polyfoam will generally increase the density of that foam (the gel pieces have more mass than the polyfoam they replace), but the polymer density of the polyfoam is lower (the actual amount of polyfoam per unit is less), so the durability can be lessened. Mixing a liquid gel polymer in with polyfoam, especially in softer quilt foams, can have an improvement with consistency and durability. It all really comes down to the exact formulation the polyfoam company is using and how it compares to one of their polyfoam versions without the additive, and what they're attempting to accomplish by the addition of the gel additive (variations in comfort, temperature regulation, durability, cost control...). I know this isn't an exact answer, but the question is too broad to be much more specific.

    You said it's not useful for a salesperson if the client is unclear about their demands, but a good salesperson helps the customer understand what they (don't know they) are looking for. You like to buy a car? Sure, what is important for you in a car? Do you have kids? Where do you stand on safety? What is your budget? etc..

      Maybe go back and watch the video again to become more clear as to what was really being discussed. The video is explaining some of the big mistakes that people make when looking for a mattress, and how this customer had absolutely no interest in learning about what things to consider when making a quality purchase.
      Of course a salesperson has the job of attempting to extract the actual needs/wants of the consumer, and then finding something that has the appropriate componentry to meet those needs.

    The ONLY thing I got out of this is to look for a 4 pound density memory foam. I wish there were more specifics of what to look for and less scientific jargon and telling you to do your research. We need more info on exact targets and goals and to tell me about what to look for on the “componentry on the inside” instead of telling us to learn about the componentry on the inside. That’s why I’m HERE. I only learned one thing. I guess that’s better than nothing.

      Density is the key metric when looking at the durability/quality of a flexible polyurethane foam, so if you gleaned that bit of information, then you're ahead of most consumers. Good for you!

    Oh my. I am so overwhelmed. I am looking for a "foam" mattress (no innerspring) . I sleep hot, prefer a firm but not rock hard mattress, want something that has long life (as much as possible). How does one figure out what is the best mattress. Any suggestions on what mattresses may fit this description???

    • @BeducationMattress
      @BeducationMattress  5 лет назад +7

      It's easy to become overwhelmed, especially with the huge amount of inaccurate and misleading information presented both online and in-store regarding mattresses. Regarding sleeping "hot", that would be a combination of many things, which I refer to as your sleeping microclimate. Avoid overly plush products (you said you like "firm" already). Generally stay away from visco-elastic foams (regardless of advertising claims to make you sleep cooler). Avoid mattress pads with impregnated PVC/plastic/vinyl layers. Use breathable sheets that are good at moisture control (lyocell is a fine material for that). Place your mattress upon a slatted platform bed to assist with air circulation. And keep your master bedroom in the mid-60s with a lower relative humidity.
      As for getting a long life out of the product, this is primarily determined by the density of the foam. The higher the density, the longer the expected comfort life. The Polyurethane Foam Association has quite a few articles discussing this and foam durability testing. Better flexible polyurethane foam will start in the 1.5-1.8 pound per cubic foot range, with the best for mattresses being in the 2.4-2.5 pound range with a compression modulus above 2.4 (this is referred to as high resiliency foam, often used in deeper upholstery layers and support cores). Latex is also a very breathable foam and is extremely durable. Unfortunately, don’t expect to find foam of this quality in the most common online brands or major brands offered at your typical national furniture retailers. But the good news is that there are over 500 mattress companies in the USA and many make very high quality products.
      There are thousands of foam mattresses made nationally, and comfort is subjective, so I couldn’t pick out a mattress for you, and you should avoid anyone who claims to be able to do so quickly online, or posts material on a web site marketed with titles such as “best cool sleeping mattress” or “best firm mattress”. These are almost always guaranteed to mattress revenue sites and not educated and objective sources of information.
      I’ve found that this mattress shopping tutorial from The Mattress Underground is a good source of logical steps you can use to educate yourself and shop for a mattress ( www.themattressunderground.com/mattress-forum/general-mattresses/8240-how-to-look-for-and-find-the-best-mattress-for-you-read-first.html#8240 ). It’s not that you need to learn everything about mattresses and their componentry (you can’t in a short period of time). But instead, arm yourself with enough information to be able to call BS on salespeople and web sites, and know enough to identify educated comfort consultants who can then guide you through this process, preferably someone locally so you can sample products in person. Use their expertise to assist you with finding a product that best suits your needs.
      I hope that information is helpful. Good luck!
