I know this area well! Over 60 years ago my parents began bringing our family “back home” for vacations and holidays. My father was raised on Woodrow mountain and moved to Columbus OH to find work as a young man. My grandfather was a black bear guide for hunters and a forest ranger. Fred and Ada lived in a log cabin near Day Run campground. I spent many summers picking blackberries and apples with my mother and Grandmother. We also did many fishing trips for mountain trout and Dad taught us kids how to catch them with our hands by draining the mountain streams. We have so many memories. Grandma had no luxuries. She cooked on a wood burning stove three times a day and drew drinking water from the stream by the cabin. So many memories and stories we lived ! I thank God for this experience, to see how to survive with only the basics of life!
Having grown up in Richwood, I spent lots of time in the Cranberry Wilderness, or Cranberry Backcountry as it was back then. I also spent a lot of time on the Scenic Highway accessing trails between Cranberry and Williams Rivers.
I'm a 56yr West Virginian. My family and I have enjoyed the Highland highway and Cranberry Wilderness for most all my life. It is a wonderful place to hike, fishing and family fun.
Lived in Richwood West Virginia, raised my kids out there. I'm back in California where my family is from, and I love love love this video!! Thank you bunches
Fantastic timing on this video. We'll be staying in the Lewisburg area for the West Virginia state fair in August. I've been planning day loops of about 150 to 200 miles and this will definitely be part of them. West "by God" Virginia here we come !
I just found information out about this scenic highway this summer. Anxious to get up there with some friends and ride the roads on our motorcycles. I just subscribed to your channel and feel.free to share any other beautiful roads to travel for my motorcycle trips. Thanks fornthe video and be safe!
Richwood Ramp Festival next month!! WOOOO HOOOOO my favorite. Great food great people excellent atmosphere. When your finished eating go into the Forest. Love this video been going here for decades out of Charleston. Highland Scenic Highway the rest areas all the way up the mountain are great. Have a picnic lay out in the sun. It's great up there. Take his advice fill your tank up in Marlinton or Richwood before you head it. Different world up there nothing like it. Thanks for the great video.
I am a native of Webster co. Most of our young go to this Scenic hwy to learn to drive when the Williams River is open. If you are ever in Webster county, visit the Addison center in Webster Springs. If Williams River is ever open, try the fishing. Its great. You really need to see the honeycomb rocks on the scenic just before you turn off to Williams River. The are amazing.
That's some great advice! I'm wanting to try some fishing in that area! I've heard it's wonderful! Thanks for the heads up! We want to head down there again this summer!
Just now seeing this. I only live about 20 mins away in braxton. My dad grew up on the Williams and gauly. He raised me up on the scenic and the Williams. I know that river back to back and that is where I learned to drive too. Now at 16, I happen to race my vehicle, being a 1988 ford bronco with my freinds and love being up that high. There is so much to do and it is so peaceful I can't get enough of it!
Absolutely beautiful ! There’s sections where you think you’re in Canada ! Wife and I rode on our motorcycle a few years ago we had no cell service the entire route just don’t break down up there !
Okay, you got me. I did not know about this scenic highway. I believe you have shown us some of the most beautiful videos I have seen of WV. I am so glad you are able to travel and video these awesome views. I have often wondered, do you carry extra gas for your truck when you go on these adventures that are so remote?
No, we don't carry extra fuel, but there was a back road that cuts through Monongahela National Forest (we made a video about it) and it might not have been a bad idea!
You can go into there from Willians River, pretty that way to, gravel road, best trout streams in the eastern US, the cherry river, Williams river, cranberry river. My home stomping ground
Just to make sure I'm understanding, you can get to HSH from Williams River? Is that the name of the road? If so, I really hope I can remember that this summer because that sounds amazing!
@@BillMarion if you come in from Interstate 79, you take US19 to Birch River, take road to Cowen, once in cowen then your only a few miles from Williams River road
Actually, there is a place called cranberry glades! It's a super flat marshland that spans quite close to 1000 acres and it's surrounded my mountains! It's so peaceful!

I'm always looking for a great scenic drive. This is wonderful but I will be taking a scenic drive just to get to this scenic drive. I live in W. MD.
Thanks for watching! We made a few videos in the mountain of MD too! But you're right, all of West Virginia is scenic!
Wish that was my back yard !!!
I wish we had that much snow!

I highly suggest visiting during fall peak, you will not be disappointed
We have a video on HSH during fall peak too!
Yep. 150 at fall peak will knock your socks off! Wife and I are going there tomorrow.
I'm betting the lepitoptera are intense in these areas! Glad you're getting out there Bill.
Yes, Mark. But this video was recorded 3 weeks ago, so it's probably awesome for lepidoptera now!

Why is it called, "Cranberry Wilderness"? I thought cranberries grow in bogs.
Don't know. I probably should have looked it up.
