hi.. i have a yearly variable stored in the format 1996-97, 1997-98 etc. how can i convert this to stata recognisable format? like for 1996-97 (thats the financial year in India) how can i get 1996 and so on?

My data set is string daily (without the weekends) I've tried formatting the data using the command: generate time=date(date, "MDY") but it keeps responding with "missing values generated". Please help me i've tried everything and nothing works. My data is 01/01/1991 (MDY) and its called date but i dont know why it isnt working
I have a little question regarding the date conversion, I have a data and date is stored as a string and the format is "1976-01-06", and I have tried to convert it to the date but everytime it generate missing value, could you have any suggestion

What could be the issue, when Stata makes out of "200001" (=01.2000) to "317707" (=07.3177) and not to 01.2000?
