I farm grassfed beef in Australia and I entirely endorse your views. Furthermore, why do these misguided people go after farmers who are feeding the human race, instead of, say, the tourism industry (flights, cruise ships etc.) which is a massive fossil fuel user and does not contribute anything to the further continuation of the human race? Makes no sense!
Of course it makes sense, As Henry Kissinger said control the food control the people. You are the CO2 they want rid of, the Georgia Guidestones werent just whistling Dixie
Well done Harry. Here in Ireland we have livestock, poultry, dairy, grain and green grass for thousands of years. That's how we survived and we're still here. It's what we're good at.It's one of our few natural resources and we do it very well. It's the middle men and greed producing cheap processed foods .There are a lot of industries involved all making money from food. The farmers of good food are getting very little from it. It's great to have a few cows and bullocks, sheep, chickens running around the yard and a pig in the barrel. Nothing wrong with veg,a few spuds and some meat grown here on the best land and climate in the world naturally .This part of the world is suitable for these industries. We should be supported and applauded for doing so. That's my rant. Thank you. 😅🇮🇪
Come from generations of farming in Scotland and heart sick of the intentional misleading information about how terrible UK and Irish farming supposidly is 🤦🙄 Thank you so much for making this video 🤗🤗
History records the pernicious behaviour of civilisations in collapse - totalitarianism, gender neutrality, death of monetary systems, uncontrolled immigration, restriction and calculated destruction of the food supply amongst others - We are witnessing the controlled collapse of modern civilisation.
Great video Harry. If I were a UK farmer, I’d make an official complaint to Ofcom about moronic and inaccurate reporting from a stated owned Channel4. Asked to get them fined and to broadcast an apology for falsely reporting the facts
no chance, Channel 4 are as woke and progressive as they come, their documentaries reflect their biases, it is all climate change, immigration, gender pay gap etc they are using tax payer money to push their own agenda but also Ofcom are just the same, infected with wokeness so no point in complaining
Hi Harry, Great video. I am an ecologist based in Ireland. You hit the nail on the head. If the beef and dairy industry goes in Ireland, it would destroy rural communities across the country. Unfortunately the extreme environmentalists don't live in the real world and certainly the politicians at international level haven't a clue either. How can the EU expect Irish or British farmers to accept the importation of Brazilian beef where the environmental standards are so low. Its not a level playing at all. If Irish tillage, dairy and beef farmers called it quits in the morning its not going to do one thing to stop climate change.
You didn't only explain how it really works in your country, Harry, but you also showed how untrue the figures can be in the media. I get really sad when I read about the farmers in Belgium, many of them are on the verge of losing their farms because of these same figures. I think we urgently need some Harry's in Belgium.
At least countries with a proportional voting system can express public concerns through the ballot box. Think that includes Belgium and definitely Holland.
Yesterday I watched David Attenborough make out that locust populations have skyrocketed and are destroying habitat and it's all our fault due to climate change. Looked it up and actually locust swarms have always been a problem throughout human history but they suddenly declined in the 70s due to human insecticides and techniques and haven't risen since. I suspect he too has cherry picked statistics from say, one African country over the last 5 years. If it's such a problem why do they have to be so dishonest?
Maybe stop buying the super powered tractors and using them for road haulage instead of artic. Or forgo the extra Range Rover for the wife. So what happens to all that cash from multiple wind turbines on one farm. ?
100% support for the British farmers. You are keeping us healthy by giving us an alternative to hyper-processed "food". We must protect British countryside and British farmers if we want to protect future generations!
Cows are NOT ‘food’ they’re living beings that deserve life in EXACTLY the same way Tom, the dog I care for has I’ve cared for cows, pigs, hedgehogs, horses, cats and many other animals, many of whom are viewed as nothing more than an object It’s absolutely disgusting especially if you live in an area where this literally doesn’t need to happen due to having access to actual foods Also, protecting the British countryside… by supporting farmers… is this a joke? 70% of UK land is literally farm land that’s actually unnecessary and of which has destroyed natural habitats If you’re sincere about that you would soon change your views to supporting British natural habitats and wildlife, not those that have taken that away all to kill animals and many of them…
@@Vegan_Photographs OK, cows are not food, agriculture is redundant. And shelves in the supermarkets are stocked by fairies who create food from pixie dust. ...and then you wake up.
@@Vegan_Photographs provide an economically literate take that doesn't cause people to become poorer and living standards to drop. Your emotional take is useless.
We must protect our beef farmers but the farmers have taken billions in climate change funding and grants…They are one of the first industries to be seduced by the climate change/environment gravy train.
And don’t the cattle look amazing and very well fed. Contented cattle are such a contrast to grain fed machines (I mean cattle). I’m now looking at purchasing direct from a farm even though I need to drive 400 klms each way…I’m in regional Australia.
I was on a 10,000 acre beef farm today in St George, Australia. What I saw was a small family show nothing but care to their livestock and a commitment to pasture improvement and vegetation management.. These farmers are not the enemy of climate change, they are actually in fact a part of the solution.
...."....solution....".....!!!! .......LOL .....said some guy who has nothing else than blunt ignorance to come up with ....on the matter of climate and what harms the balance.....
Haha ....it's hard to believe..... Dude you must really live under a rock if you haven't heard about that emission of CO2 and even more so methane harms the delicate balance in the atmosphere. Concentrations of those gases are alarmingly and record high. Never before in history of mankind has such concentrations been present. We don't need such video's like the above spreading ignorance and misinformation. We can NOT go one like before ....as if nothing is happening. We have already seen a warming of the Arctic with 6 degrees. We're observing that this is triggering an exponential effect by that permafrost is melting and release methane. ...yeah...I'm a scientist on these things. It's about time that it hits you that we are standing on the brink of a climate catastrophe.... Nature will hit hard I can tell you.....the rest you will have to experience yourself.....
Well said Harry. Things in Ireland are getting just as bad. Lot's of false or misleading information going around. It's a tough industry to stay in. High input costs, low income, and now increasing anti-beef public sentiment. Former suckler now dry stock beef farmer from Ireland, 28.
Did you hear Aodhán Ó Ríordán on the radio the other day saying if we don't change what we eat well be under water in the next 30 years 🙄. Correct me if I'm wrong but is it 40000 cattle per year over the next 5 years the Irish government want to slaughter to be able to reach their climate commitment?
Agriculture is the largest producer of carbon emissions in Ireland, almost 40% of the country's total emissions. 90% of that produce is exported as premium product. There is no reason for the state to subsidise it.
It’s really a pity this is not put on mainstream television and media outlets, although it probably wouldn’t be liked because it doesn’t fit in with their agenda. Thanks for another very interesting and informative video Harry.
.......the only reason to put this on TV....would be to show how someone twist facts ....and really don't know what they are talking about. It's a complete failed logic .....or at best blunt ignorance shown.
@@michaelgurd7477 Bill gates funds like 75% of our main media, he would cut their funding if they don't push this Great Reset agenda basically. I gave up watching the BBC etc due to their lies and propaganda during the whole convid thing.
This message needs to be out in the mainstream. As a YDNP volunteer we had a talk from a local farmer at Malham, who has increased his Belted Galloway herd, reduced the sheep, he is more profitable, produces less co2, spends less time farming and there is an environmental Wildlife benefit to the land as the grazing habits are different. But no researcher would tell you that.
The average person is only interested in the price of food, cheap as possible. I buy organic , this is to encourage less use of chemicals for the environment as well as my own health
This is what RUclips is for. Informed opinion debunking lazy mainstream journalism. The good news is that young people who are forming their opinions about the world will watch RUclips documentaries like this rather than big budget scheduled TV every day of the week. Well done Harry.
If TV programs had a thumbs up or down button, I think the ratings would show a different story, just because a viewer tuned into a program does not mean they liked or agreed with it. Statistics can be used in all sorts of ways, mostly only to favor the type of program being made.
I have to say that 99% of YT is a pile of low-brow, biased, non-researched, appallingly presented, badly made, untrue, dangerous content that is influencing tens of millions of young people. There some notable exceptions of course, Harry's channel being one of them.
I hope Clarkson gets on this also...This silly carbon agenda has come direct from Technoratis at Davos lobbied to the media pure money grabbing...they tried in the Netherlands but they fought back thank God.
This is similar to what happened in The Netherlands, they (media, government, stakeholders) just plain lied to push through extreme net zero requirements and used laws reserved for extreme circumstances to compulsory purchase farms and close them down under the guise of them creating too much C02 and nitrogen. Luckily the farmers fought back, started their own political party and won the last election and afaik, promptly reversed the decisions made. This program is part of the same movement, someone doesn’t just decide to make these shows, they’re suggested.
I object to your comment. There is a serious issue with excess nitrogen and the effect it has on the environment. Harry is asking for specific judgements to be made on farming in different environments. Some cultures of farming in the right landscape can be more environmentally appropriate than others. Fair point. You are muddling these distinctions back up again to a general international 'us vs them' debate which from his introduction 00:42 is what Harry is trying to get AWAY from! Harry is saying something more precise.
@@artgreen6915the atmosphere is 78% nitrogen. Allowing excess nitrogen fertilizer application may not be the issue but using fuel like natural gas to produce nitrogen fertilizer. Ya it comes from the air. Phosphate is another matter
Well done, Harry. I'm an environmentalist (BSC Human Ecology) and I'm happy with everything you have said. Ruminants are an important component for keeping our ecological carbon sequestration cycle working properly. I'm a great believer in having the availability of quality meat proteins for all. Feed-lot meat is not that. We do need to do something about the hedges in this country though. Such an important form of ecological carbon sequestration as well as for biodiversity. Only just found your channel, so maybe you have covered the hedgerow issue. But that can't be stressed enough. The current paradigm shift in British Agriculture goes both ways.
What a brilliant video Harry. You explained the British beef industry clearly and articulately, far better than most of our 'representatives'. The whole industry needs to use this and develop a clear message, based on science and use it to counter the nonsense we saw on the Ch 4 programme.
non expert here, literally spent 15 mins searching reading up, it’s mainly forage-based silage/ haylage and some wholecrop, maize and straw. Example winter diet for a mid pregnant 500kg heifer is 15kg silage, 3kg straw, 5kg wholecrop and perhaps rapemeal at around 0.3kg 😊
Exactly , Eamonn Ryan and co ( The Green Fascists' ) wanting to reduce the national herd because of their crazy ideology ( no doubt backed behind the scenes by some other crazies ) . Also , worth noting , this is not a directive from the EU !! Its just Eamonn + the other " cabbage heads " going off on their own little crusade !! 🙄🤬
Totally agree! We’ve got to save our British farms and farmers from this misinformation. Unfortunately it suits those in power for us to not gaze at their more polluting (and less valued contribution to society) ways.
As someone who grew up on a mixed farm in Ireland, a country even more suitable to grass growing, I completely concur. Excellent presentation as usual Harry. Thank you for doing this.
Ireland is only ‘suitable’ for grass growing because of the huge amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium we spray all over it. Plus we drain the landscape of water too. Ireland has no ‘natural’ advantage in gras growing.
I give a 1 star review to that review. It was so badly written, I'm not even sure what the author's problem was with the programme. But I suppose it does show how abysmal the programme was that the critic couldn't find anything to praise.
@@annapachaclarke2392 He means they are more likely to give glowing reviews to anything that supports the climate narrative, so if they gave a bad review to a programme like this, it must have been very poor.
I’m a Brit overseas, watching this from the outside looking in, the best thing the UK government could do is have people like Harry give them all the advice they will listen to. Reasoned, informed and well balanced opinions are becoming such a rarity.
The UK fires any reasonable person who knows what they are talking about, and instead listens to whoever has the deepest pockets (i.e. large multinational food companies).
@@MrDziuka So in your opinion - If the UK gov did listen to farmers such as Harry, everyone and their dog will suddenly take up cattle farming? What are you on about? Honestly, The dude in the video has lovely fields, Nice trees and a beautiful stream. Also seen some lovely hedgerows. "and we'll have none of the natural habitat left" Have you ever been for a walk/hike? I'm off to the lake district tomorrow - Would you like some photos of our "complete lack of natural habitats"? I also live in a major town (South east), Yet I can drive 20minutes north/west direction and find lovely natural fields/woodlands that are vast. I can walk 10-20minutes in the other directions and find myself walking for hours before I get back home.
Thanks for the rant Harry! You’re doing your best with what you have to work with. You should be in charge of UK Agriculture! My family is from Puglia, Italy. If you don’t grow it, you don’t eat. Olives, grapes, rapini, tomatoes, nuts and wheat. I would move back just for the bread and cheese! Semolina bread and semi picante fresh cheese. The bread lasts a week and the cheese is so fresh it’s still soft! Have a great year! 😊🥖🧀🍷
Grass fed British beef ( from a butcher ) is one of the healthiest foods in the world, that you can eat. Very similar processes exist in Ireland, France, Spain. The same standards. Much healthier than Norwegian farmed salmon, which celebrities like. Support your local butcher. He is providing you with the best. He eats it himself and feeds it to his own family.
I grew up on a small holding in Ireland during the 70/80s. Traditionally in Ireland the farmers kept Hereford, Aberdeen Angus, dexter, Irish moiled etc. These were mostly small animals ideally suited to the Irish climate ( read rain) and soil. When Ireland joined the EEC (1973) there was a big governmental campaign to produce beef suitable for the European market. Farmers were told that the beef from our small animals was not to the liking of the Europeans who liked a certain type of “ marbeling” in the meat. So the farmers did what farmers do , they changed the heard to continental cattle breeds in order to supply the market. The whole push was for large beef breeds that matured quickly. Small farms that would have traditionally also had some acerage set aside for the growing of crops were now only devoted to the production of cheep beef. Grants were paid for land drainage and the development of poor land. All to produce more beef and dairy products. We are where we are now because the farmers did what the were ASKED to do.
Well said Harry. We need more like yourself to spread the truth about British farming. I’m fed up with all the nonsense and exaggerated news forced down our throats by the media. Love this channel as much as the garage, I find it really interesting finding out about the problems British farmers face especially nowadays.
Excellent explanation Harry, thank you. Yet another example of the media telling some of the facts but not all of the truth. A common and deceitful practice.
@@grahamwhite75a Probably not what you would want to learn but methane is a 4x as much harmful greenhouse gas than CO2 and Olive oil doesn’t emit CO2 unless it’s oxidised.
Aw I vegan I found your environmental case for your type of sustainable farming extremely compelling. Thanks for sharing your knowledge in such a patient and thorough manner.
Just found Harry's website and so pleased l have . Have lived and worked on dairy / beef farms in Dorset and this is an excellent representation They were pushing poultry consumption in the programme but completely overlooked the welfare issues in intensive chicken units No mention of ethically sourced birds etc Surprised they didn't serve up a medley of fried insects Bill Gaits style . Merry Christmas one and all 🎄⛄💫🥂and a Huge Huge Thank You to all our food producers/ farming workforce ♥️
I once sat in a hotel bar in South Wales and overheard a conversation about a new intensive Chicken production facility. The folks discussing it were the contractor and client, it was being built circa 10 miles away. Put me right off chicken, no ethics whatsoever, profit profit profit, no other topic discussed. Every credit to Harry and other farmers looking at the big picture and above all livestock welfare.
The beef farmers in uk and Ireland are incredibly efficient at what they do. Animal welfare is a big deal and highly regulated by both Great Britain and European governments.
The soil quality in the Irish Republic is poor, and the farmers have greedily saturated the ground in nitrates to improve it. In the process they have polluted the watercourses across the country. It's an environmental disaster zone. Fishless rivers, humans drinking bottled water and all the rest.
Animal welfare? How does the poor ow feels when they sense gonna be slaughtered? Do with all imprisoned animals and slaughter houses , just the name makes me cringe
@@weeeeehhhhhSearch water quality and agriculture in Ireland. The nitrate levels are generally ok for drinking but 44% of tested sites are above the levels required for healthy river ecosystems. Especially in the east and south of the country our rivers no longer support any substantial levels of aquatic life unfortunately. We need agriculture, but it just needs to be less intensively damaging to the environment. Programmes such as limiting runoff, and purchasing farms or requiring subsidised woodland restoration along protected waterways to avoid direct runoff, would help to alleviate these issues. Farmers should understand their impact and work with local authorities, if you talk to anyone from older generations they will tell you how degraded the rivers have become in just a couple generations.
Excellent explanation for us non-farming types. I despair at the media/government/those accountable who have an agenda and no intention of airing facts. Harry, your country needs you. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely, we can easily do with more CO2, not less, just like the times when the earth was covered in more plant life. To the Yt staff and 77th brigade - think of your children and grandchildren before removing my comments. When they ask why you contributed to their totalitarian life in return for money, what will you tell them?
This program should be broadcast on the BBC : it is easier to produce a program prepared by right-thinking NGOs than to really think about the subject you want to present. Thank you Harry for these brilliant and useful explanations. I suppose they are also valid to some extents for France where I live.
@@ElsieM365 Well I don't watch BBC anymore, gone are the days when I watched Newsnight most nights, but unfortunately its not a complete waste of time. its a propaganda organisation paid for by a captive public.
Harry I wish you could put this video on mainstream t.v. as a sensible reply to that programme, I’m sure it’s something that the general public could understand and appreciate. Well done and thank you on behalf of all the down to earth genuine beef producers here in the u.k. and Ireland.
Harry, you are the archetypal gent. Wisdom and intellect, without an ugly ego or agenda. This is a brilliantly informative video. Thanks very much for all that you do.
Thank you so much Harry for doing this. I'm not a farmer I have zero links to farming. I'm just a truck driver from an urban city. Even I can see the claims that the UK needs to stop farming to save the planet is utterly ludicrous. Please anybody who watches this get it shared around everywhere you can , this madness of attacking farmers has to stop.
I don’t normally comment on RUclips and am not involved in the farming world but love to follow it. Totally agree with Harry and so pleased you made this video. I vote for this clip being included in next week’s Countryfile!
That was special in so many ways. Analytical, specific to our country, clearly explained without rage although I could sense the repressed fury at the biased reporting. It's always a more powerful message when expressed with passion and personal knowledge. Well done 👍
yeah >50% of UK land now just grassy field for grazing - definitely looking after it. These dinosaurs need to move over and let innovation take over. Take away their giant subsidies totalling billions per year and invest that in modern high tech farming, instead of their 3rd range rover
Dear Harry, what a superb video, thank you for clarifying the facts of livestock farming in the UK! We owe you and all the UK farmers a gratitude of debt. You really are what makes living in the UK great.
No farmers no food. It’s bad if it’s all by accident but it’s far more worrying if it’s deliberate. It’s time to go dutch. Or French. Have popped you an email over to try talk more about the challenges we are facing as motorists, and all these things are connected 👍
Hi Harry, excellent video. We have similar issues here in New Zealand which relies heavily on the rural sector for exports. Farmer basing by ignorant urbanites is becoming a major problem whilst other industries get away with more serious environmental issues
I don't get why NZ exports all the good stuff and feeds crap to the locals Having lived there one year the NZ cheese is not good when it seems it should be cheap and tasty but it was the exact opposite
No Rob most of the debates here are about water quality downstream of farms due to overstocking of dairy heards on any available piece of flat land and the intense irrigation that requires, often to the detriment of our aquifers and rivers. Harry's 40 beef cows frollicking on a valley are not what our environmental regulations are aimed at
@@lastguy8613Did you notice Harry mentioned the cattle have access to the brook at the bottom of the field for drinking water , that is illegal in NZ on the same class of land. NZ's water quality is very high by international standards.
Another point is that if you stopped grazing cattle on your farm, it's not like it would sit fallow for eternity thereafter. Eventually the use case for the land would have to change, and something else would be built there. I don't know your area enough to say whether that would be chicken coops or condos, but I can't imagine it would be as idyllic and sustainable as what's there now. Keep up the great work.
Harry you are a magician, you have clearly and properly described what we are doing as an industry in a way that most people will understand! Far better than any NFU response. All i can say is thank you.
Well said Harry Metcalfe!! Long time viewer, first time texter here. Obviously a subject very close to your heart and we could all hear the emotion bubble up when you mention being a custodian of the land and passing the batton over to the next generation. Very very emotive and absolutely on point! Such an important subject needs clear, concise and scientific debate to keep the policy makers/public on the right track and not swayed with mass hysteria caused by very poor journalism, as we saw on CH4. Keep up the good work Harry !!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻👌
It’s shocking how the masses are misled and misinformed about the food industry especially in a country like the UK. Thank you Harry and thanks to everyone involved in farming.
Fortunately I have never ate fast food or processed, and 2003 when doing some research about vaxes,I found out about the food fluoride in the water, and many other nasty things I did try warning as many people as possible.
As always Harry, you explain things so well. The voice of common sense, always informative, calm and collective. I’m glad you do what you do, but I cannot help thinking it’s a pity you are not in government. People like you, put in a position of power, would make a real, positive difference. Keep up your excellent work sir.
Thanks for putting things in perspective Harry, for those people who just don't get it. I hope they all watch this and get educated. My British beef Sunday roast was delicious and I don't feel at all guilty saying that. I'm proud to support our farmers!
Hiya bud my brother sent me this video and I couldn't agree more with you with what you have just explained well done sir for trying to highlight these points 👏👏👏👏
It would be nice for the BBC or Country file to show this information. I get fed up with miss information being spread by the main stream media never shining a light on how bad avocado farming and shipping or how soya is grown.
Well done for explaining the differences between U.K. and U.S. or Brazil etc production methods for beef. I am with you in that the media need to research things more thoroughly and present a properly balanced view and not the "we are all going to die if we eat beef" view. This needs to be seen by as many people as possible including the people banning beef from school menus etc. Keep up the good work on keeping us informed about the Farming Industry in the U.K.
I'm non farming but take a an interest and respect what you do. You have presented a clear explanation which should be broadcast to the general public , but which of the media would take it on. Good luck with your battle to save our land for future generations. Thank you
This video is misrepresenting the data in the studies referenced. The two studies are not directly comparable without making some adjustments: 1/ The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) study shown in the video is based on emissions per kg of beef carcass. The World in Data (WID) study is based on emissions per kg of beef food. The presenter makes the point from 6:16 in the video that we have to be careful about comparing tonnage stats, but he then seems to forget about that when presenting the data himself. Using his own ratio to convert the figures (600,000 tons beef food = 1,000,000 tons carcass’s) the adjusted WID range would be: Low: 9.3 (up from 5.6) Average: 39 (up from 23.4) High 92 (up from 55) 2/ AHDB study excludes any emissions after farm gate - meaning the “waste” portion (which is about 14% of the emissions from the WID study) is excluded. If waste is added to the AHDB study in the same ratio this brings the AHDB range to: Low: 10.6 Average: 44 High: 105 Let’s however assume there is 50% less waste of beef produced in U.K. because most of the consumption is nearby. So that’s a 7% waste ratio (instead of the 14%) This gives us : Low: 10 Average: 42 High: 98 3/ The presenter focuses his analysis using only the low end of the range (5.5) but why? Surely the average (23.4) would be a more reasonable data point, after adjusting based on points 2/ and 3/ above). To select the low end feels like cherry picking the data just to make the point he wants. In this case he wants to say that U.K. beef is the same emissions intensity as Olive Oil. But this seems inaccurate analysis at best, and deliberately misleading at worst. *** Conclusion: A better comparison of the studies would show: AHDB: 42 (adjusted average) WID: 99 Main reason for the difference may be the level of emissions from global land use change in the WID chart, which as the video states may be not comparable for the U.K. The now-adjusted average figure of 42 places U.K. beef as the second highest level of c02e intensity per kg of food based on the WID chart. Therefore, based only on the data used in these videos, the concern remains therefore that beef (including U.K. beef) is one of the highest intensity emissions foods. Please tell me where I’ve gone wrong with this analysis and I’ll be happy to hear thoughts.
Harry, I always await your Farm video's with interest and anticipation. This one is spot on. The problem is that the mainstream media channels for whatever reason dont want to accept your reasoned point of view and their coverage to the general population is much greater than yours via youtube. However could you consider a link up with your neighbour Jeremy Clarkson whose Amazon farming programme has got massive reach into the UK populace to jointly get this very important message about beef farming in the UK and Ireland across to the public before its too late
Thanks Harry, brilliant as usual. The times I have had to point out to people that the beautiful British countryside only looks like it does because of the care and passion of the farmers who tend to it.
I appreciate your informative breakdown and you have my sympathy dealing with the cultists. Want to know where this ends? Look to Netherlands, France and Germany
Great overview Harry. Unfortunately our farming organisations (in ireland anyway), don't have the communications ability to have this argument with the green/farmer bashing side. We need more communications like this to educate the masses. Hoping Clarkson does a segment on it, that will reach a greater audience in a way that they will understand. In Ireland the cattle population is roughly the same as it was in 1972, less sucklers and more dairy. James
An outstanding, well thought through, balanced production - thanks you. It is such a shame that our once trusted British main stream media has reached these depths. Harry you should ask to go onto TV to present the proper situation for the sake of British farming and our understanding.
They aren't documentary makers or researchers, they are media activists, there's more to this than meets the eye, you have just beat them at what they are supposedly employed to do & made a short doc with fact checked research, well done Harry
Well said, Harry. Excellent content. Journalists and programme makers take note: Everything you want to know about British farming can be found right here.
Say it all again Harry. And often. British farming is so misunderstood by so many. Up here in the Highlands of Scotland there are more sheep than cattle but everything you said is still valid. Please keep up your rants .......... sooner or later the townies will learn thanks to people like you. Chapeau !
I am not a farmer though I have many relatives who are in agriculture, some with advanced degrees in agriculture. All of them work closely with their local university extension service (here in the US). When I heard that the WEF, Bill Gates and other 'greens' wanted to end farming "as we know it," and want us to get our protien from bugs, I knew it had all gone to far. Thank you for being reasonable and speaking truth.
My wife did not like me watching that Channel 4 program as it was driving me mad with them comparing apples with oranges. They had a token bit about one regenerative farmer producing beef but no context to the rest of the misinformation in the program. Thanks for your video. 😊
Thank the Lord that we have people like Harry who understand exactly what they are talking about and are experts in their field - unlike these clowns who produce TV programmes for the sake of what can best be described as 'click bait' and false ratings. Documentary programmes like these should not be allowed. Full stop. What happened to good old fashioned, professional journalism where sources of information were always double fact checked? A very heartfelt and emotional Harry there, telling it as it is. We need someone like Harry in charge of this stuff in the UK - we cannot leave it to these irresponsible and under educated so called programme makers, who just don’t have a clue - shocking!
What happened to intelligence and common sense? Oh, no, sorry, that went out of the window sometime around 1965 when the academics and idealists took over society.
Unfortunately, it's more than clickbait they are pushing an insidious agenda. Veganism, plant-based diets, and fake food are all designed to make you weak and sick by eating food from the big food industry and taking pharmaceuticals from big pharma to keep you sick but alive that you wouldn't otherwise need if you just ate beef.
Ask those setting the goals to prove that it is humans/animals causing the carbon levels to rise. They can't because they don't. Any so-called proof of the climate changing is based on cherry-picked data and models which are fictitious projections based on that data. Scientists will say whatever they are paid to say. The current level of CO2 makes up just 0.04% of the atmosphere. During periods when there was far more plant life, the levels of CO2 were far higher. Scientists have shown that the level of carbon in the atmosphere increases AFTER the planet's temperature has warmed, it isn't a cause. During the 5 ice ages we know about, CO2 made up around 30% of the atmosphere. If the carbon level goes down much more, there will be no plant life and life on earth as we know it will be destroyed. Farmers with glasshouse actually pump more carbon into them to produce higher yields. We need more carbon, not less.
Great video. I do think there's also a middle band which shouldn't be forgotten. The majority who aren't organic but maximise their use of grass and other forages for their ruminants but also balance it with some other products such as home grown cereals etc. The fact all your grass is photosynthesising, capturing aerobic CO2 is also key. Every leaf in your field is a solar panel in its own right! Thank you.
Thank you Harry, again, for the sense and clarity you bring to this subject and others. If only the mainstream media and politicians could see further than their own immediate interests.
Thank you for addressing this, I live in a hill country in California, and we are in a beef production area because of the geography and topography. In the flatlands near us grows cereals, but you can on grow grass where we are at, and without livestock, the wildfire risk would be exponentially worse.
Another excellent video Harry. The main trouble is that there's never a main stream video to counter the C4 one-sided version. Therefore, we need to make this video go viral so that the rest of the UK can listen to a farmer tell more of the truth and why/what is wrong with the other program. I hope that you make it onto TV and get to say your piece for UK farmers and can help voice your concerns.
Well said. Why do the mainstream media push out such bollocks when it comes to climate change? Keep up the good work farming and looking after our countryside.
How does all news stories that you disagree with become 'mainstream media' ? I agree that there is not enough information, coverage or emphasis in the 'news' about food production and, for example, how and why it costs what it does
Fantastic video. You may have forgotten to mention that grass takes up a fantastic amount of CO2 whilst it grows. So your cows are essentially Carbon neutral.
Thank you so much for your well explained RUclips. British people are so lucky to be able to eat grass fed beef, milk and cheese. I am horrified by factory farming where the fields are empty and the poor animals never see grass.

Absolutely no regard for how their carelessness affects the collective decisions of the population and how it wastes everyone’s time in trying to change/fix/improve the wrong things.

Same thing has been going on against NZ farmers. Going so far as to be taxed for livestock bodily gas output. It's embarassing and aggravating. We need this type of documentary to be broadcast on TV to drive home the message. Great work.
Brilliant video Harry, very well documented and fully backed by data for the uk. It really annoys me that the general public get fed such misguided information. As you quite rightly say the british countryside would not look the same if it was not for farming. Keep up the good work mate.
So frustrating to hear the negative press that meat, and especially beef, is getting. You have once again given a sensible and balanced view in response to the out of touch views of journalists and politicians
Unfortunately, here in America, the problem is only getting worse. Feed lot numbers are on the rise. Grass feeding is becoming more prominent, but only so they can charge us more. $3.99 for feed lot beef, 9.99 for grass feed! The number of small private family farms is decreasing, and giant agro businesses farms is on the increase. I studied Animal Science and Agriculture at the university of Kentucky (UK). I agree with everything you said. Unfortunately, I seem to be in the minority.

Great video Harry. If I were a UK farmer, I’d make an official complaint to Ofcom about moronic and inaccurate reporting from a stated owned Channel4. Asked to get them fined and to broadcast an apology for falsely reporting the facts
no chance, Channel 4 are as woke and progressive as they come, their documentaries reflect their biases, it is all climate change, immigration, gender pay gap etc
they are using tax payer money to push their own agenda but also Ofcom are just the same, infected with wokeness so no point in complaining

Its worldwide, WEF NWO, you are the Carbon they want to eliminate

"I am from the government, and I'm here to help." The single most terrifying thing you can hear.

Dear Harry, what a superb video, thank you for clarifying the facts of livestock farming in the UK! We owe you and all the UK farmers a gratitude of debt. You really are what makes living in the UK great.
😂 o lord 🙈
No farmers no food. It’s bad if it’s all by accident but it’s far more worrying if it’s deliberate. It’s time to go dutch. Or French. Have popped you an email over to try talk more about the challenges we are facing as motorists, and all these things are connected 👍
You are right on the Ball Geoff, love your channel. Ive been watching the WEF Davos
since 2014 on Reuters and AP raw feeds
Good to see you commenting here Geoff. I hope you and Harry can discuss this further. 🤞
Hi Harry, excellent video. We have similar issues here in New Zealand which relies heavily on the rural sector for exports. Farmer basing by ignorant urbanites is becoming a major problem whilst other industries get away with more serious environmental issues
I don't get why NZ exports all the good stuff and feeds crap to the locals
Having lived there one year the NZ cheese is not good when it seems it should be cheap and tasty but it was the exact opposite
Harry this is far from a rant, you calmly told us the information and thank you for that. Now all we need to do is get the word out there.
Thank you for your in depth analysis of this perplexing problem.
Thanks Harry for explaining clearly for people to understand, I wish this video could be on TV so that the mainstream audience can view it.
It’s shocking how the masses are misled and misinformed about the food industry especially in a country like the UK.
Thank you Harry and thanks to everyone involved in farming.
It's not shocking. The masses never actually engage their brains. They never have.
@@fredmercury1314 True to many don’t care about what they are eating, let alone where it comes from.
Fortunately I have never ate fast food or processed, and 2003 when doing some research about vaxes,I found out about the food fluoride in the water, and many other nasty things I did try warning as many people as possible.
@@Ellenad369 A zero filter jug is the simplest way to fix your water.
@@bbybeatboxx Thank you for your reply, and yes I have been using the Zero Water products for over a year now, they are definitely the best.♥️👍
As usual, the media telling some of the facts but not all of the truth to suit their agenda. Excellent stuff Harry.
I'm non farming but take a
an interest and respect what you do.
You have presented a clear explanation which should be broadcast to the general public , but which of the media would take it on. Good luck with your battle to save our land for future generations. Thank you
This video is misrepresenting the data in the studies referenced. The two studies are not directly comparable without making some adjustments:
1/ The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) study shown in the video is based on emissions per kg of beef carcass. The World in Data (WID) study is based on emissions per kg of beef food. The presenter makes the point from 6:16 in the video that we have to be careful about comparing tonnage stats, but he then seems to forget about that when presenting the data himself.
Using his own ratio to convert the figures (600,000 tons beef food = 1,000,000 tons carcass’s) the adjusted WID range would be:
Low: 9.3 (up from 5.6)
Average: 39 (up from 23.4)
High 92 (up from 55)
2/ AHDB study excludes any emissions after farm gate - meaning the “waste” portion (which is about 14% of the emissions from the WID study) is excluded. If waste is added to the AHDB study in the same ratio this brings the AHDB range to:
Low: 10.6
Average: 44
High: 105
Let’s however assume there is 50% less waste of beef produced in U.K. because most of the consumption is nearby. So that’s a 7% waste ratio (instead of the 14%)
This gives us :
Low: 10
Average: 42
High: 98
3/ The presenter focuses his analysis using only the low end of the range (5.5) but why? Surely the average (23.4) would be a more reasonable data point, after adjusting based on points 2/ and 3/ above). To select the low end feels like cherry picking the data just to make the point he wants. In this case he wants to say that U.K. beef is the same emissions intensity as Olive Oil. But this seems inaccurate analysis at best, and deliberately misleading at worst.
***
Conclusion:
A better comparison of the studies would show:
AHDB: 42 (adjusted average)
WID: 99
Main reason for the difference may be the level of emissions from global land use change in the WID chart, which as the video states may be not comparable for the U.K.
Well said Harry, Jeremy Clarkson needs to invite you onto his TV programme to explain this to a mass audience.
If it was left to government the countryside would become acres of housing estate's, large corporate warehouses or other industrial facilities.
Look, there's a context warning. Harry must be on to something.
If Harry is speaking, I’m listening.
Well said Harry, I hope the British government advisors, and others groups, as well as school teachers take note of this video 😊
Say it all again Harry. And often. British farming is so misunderstood by so many. Up here in the Highlands of Scotland there are more sheep than cattle but everything you said is still valid. Please keep up your rants .......... sooner or later the townies will learn thanks to people like you. Chapeau !
But most townies think meat comes ready wrapped and is bought in Tesco's.
Sheep graze highly marginal land that if not farmed round simply revert to scrub, ie George Monbiots entire raison d'etre.
Great informative video Harry.
Fellow beef farmer.
So well explained...I just can't understand how people don't see this😞
Great video. Thank you.
Yes and that never gets mentioned I would imagine farms are probably carbon negative.
Thank you Harry!!
For the regenerative farming and explaining it so well.
Another excellent video Harry. The main trouble is that there's never a main stream video to counter the C4 one-sided version. Therefore, we need to make this video go viral so that the rest of the UK can listen to a farmer tell more of the truth and why/what is wrong with the other program.
I hope that you make it onto TV and get to say your piece for UK farmers and can help voice your concerns.
this man needs air time on the news to spread this message !
Well said. Why do the mainstream media push out such bollocks when it comes to climate change? Keep up the good work farming and looking after our countryside.
How does all news stories that you disagree with become 'mainstream media' ? I agree that there is not enough information, coverage or emphasis in the 'news' about food production and, for example, how and why it costs what it does
When did Channel 4 become "mainstream media"? Does it broadcast anything actually worth watching?
Fantastic video. You may have forgotten to mention that grass takes up a fantastic amount of CO2 whilst it grows. So your cows are essentially Carbon neutral.
Thank you so much for your well explained RUclips. British people are so lucky to be able to eat grass fed beef, milk and cheese. I am horrified by factory farming where the fields are empty and the poor animals never see grass.
Well Done Harry!
Great Detailed Explanation of Farming in the UK and Ireland. Most Beef & Sheep Farms with Grassland and Perimeter of Fields Lined with Trees which Soak up Carbon Dioxide. Nature at its Finest! What's with the overuse of the caps key?
Thank you for taking the time to make this video and explain it so well. It’s honestly so frustrating that the media are so careless about the information they expose millions of viewers/readers to. Absolutely no regard for how their carelessness affects the collective decisions of the population and how it wastes everyone’s time in trying to change/fix/improve the wrong things.
Lol no such thing as carelessness when it comes to TV, they know 90% of the people who are dumb enough to watch it won't question it or even attempt to fact check it. Hope you weren't serious 😅
@@fredchris3509So true. Too many people with no critical thought, who believe any rubbish which they are fed by mainstream propoganda!
A superb presentation Harry, getting that message out to our primarily urban, office working population is so, so important, please keep it up
Thank you Harry. Thank you! As much as I love your Farm and Garage channels, you are sadly wasted in the wonderful role you have, and which all of us here so much enjoy. You should be in charge of BOTH the Dept of Agriculture AND the Ministry of Transport. (Your mate Jezza can be your #2!). Like many I despair at the scare mongering nonsense put out by the gov/media - neither of whom ever do any meaningful or relevant research - just fear mongering preaching. I love it when you have your 'rants' - I have them too!! - so please continue with this type of video. They're SO important.
Thank you again.
Well done Harry. Unfortunately there is a big group of people who don't want to understand what you are saying.
I feel sorry for the generations to come, when they realise how wrong the current governments are.
Governments and mainstream media is no longer in service of the people, they have a different agenda.
If they ever grow a pair, they'll be very angry and rightly so.
The Government takes it's orders from Billderberg NGO's and their aim is to end private ownership of land and propertyl
@@DM-ur8vc I don't think anyone's saying there not... But nowadays information is way more public...
It's not just Goverment it's mindless ideology - some of which like JSO - attempts to drive the Adminstration .Blaming the Government all the time is misguided.
Same thing has been going on against NZ farmers. Going so far as to be taxed for livestock bodily gas output. It's embarassing and aggravating. The vast majority of our beef farms aren't industrial, as they are assumed by activists and the soil quality here is largely unsuitable for widespread horticulture. I'm glad you made this video. I hope more people watch it.
Wtf is going on? Could someone explain what's the point of do8ng it?
I expect that of the grass was allowed to rot/decompose naturally it would produce the same methane as if it went through a cows rumen.
@@artemartem842 Misdirection, blame cow farts and get people focused on that instead of actually doing anything about fossil fuels. Lobbying and misinformation campaigns by those who're invested in fossil fuels (aka most large corporations)
Very well put Harry and an education to the misguided. British farmers should not be bracketed with the likes of Brasil but should be commended for their efforts to minimise the impact on the environment in beef production.
Absolutely brilliant video outlining the actual facts, thank you for being a voice of reason! I will proudly buy British beef for as long as I live
Thank You Harry for going to the trouble of researching and presenting such well balanced view of things. Thank Goodness We,ve got people like you that speak plain common sense ! We Beef farmers need all the help we can get….
Thank you so much for your common sense and PROPER analysis of the situation in this country Harry. I agree with others that this message needs to get in the mainstream media!!
I really do feel for you Harry and all farmers in the UK and Ireland. Politicians and green lobbies seem to not have a brain cell between the lot of them.
They don't think we need farming because after all we get all our food from the supermarket.
They don't, the green mob is a cult. And they will collapse the western world if they get their way.
