How did the Grand Canyon form? What is its history?

  • Overlooking the Grand Canyon, Del Tackett and geologist Steve Austin discuss the history of the rock strata from Creation Week to the present day, where we are introduced to the conventional paradigm argued by Charles Lyell and Charles Darwin. Afterward, Tackett and Dr. Austin venture down to the Colorado River and talk about the catastrophic processes were necessary to carve out such a deep canyon through thousands of feet of rock.
Dr. Austin is a field research geologist who has done research on six of the seven continents of the world. His research has taken him by helicopter into the crater on Mount St. Helens, by bush plane onto glaciers in Alaska, by raft through the Grand Canyon, on horseback into the high Sierra, by elevator into the world’s deepest coal mines, by SCUBA onto the Great Barrier Reef, by rail into Korean backcountry, by foot onto barren plateaus of southern Argentina, and by four-wheel drive into remote desert areas of Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Dr. Austin received his PhD from Pennsylvania State University in sedimentary geology.

As a child I recall leaving the garden hose on as it lay on our gravel driveway. It created a miniature model of The Grand Canyon, so striking that the image still remains with me over 50 years later.

I'm so glad I found this series. My wife and I recently traveled down the Grand Staircase. When we got to Vermillion Cliffs, we both immediately thought a huge flood. We went to the Grand Canyon and read the plaques and the story on it made me scratch my head as things didn't make sense. Dr Austin has sucked me into this big question and we are so thankful for our time there and listening to Dr Austin makes it even more special.

You come to a public forum and pronounce yourself as an authority figure on the stratified layers when you are clueless - which is more insanity.
You accuse me of "playing around" and "pretending" which is more insanity.
You accuse me of "make believe" when I have thousands of independent sources, written in dozens of languages from all across our Earth, spanning several centuries which tell us the Earth Scientists - and the rest of the "scientific community" and anyone that believes them - are detached from reality which means they're insane.
Since evidence from thousands of sources, includes hundreds of documents from our ancestors who reported the Earth Changes - for thousands of years - since they tell us "creationists" are insane - while also telling us geologists are also insanely detached from reality, since the Bible never says God created Earth nearly 6,000 years ago, since the bible never says the flood of Genesis formed the Grand Canyon and since the original Hebrew never mention mountains, continents or oceans - while our ancestors tell us that the vast majority of Earth's expansion occurred AFTER the flood of Genesis and that this expansion includes our mountains, then we know that when the book of Genesis says "All the Earth was inundated", refers to the small Earth BEFORE the expansion - before our Earth had continents, before the oceans were formed and before the mountains were formed.
Since numerous independent sources tell us that at the time of the Great Flood of Genesis, "Mount Ararat" was not a mountain but a "mount" - approx 500 ft in elevation - so when you do the research, as I have done, you will see that at the time of Noah's flood, Mount Ararat was about as high as the ark was long - you will also see our Earth had no continents and no oceans at the time of the Great Flood of Genesis.
Since you haven't seen the thousands of sources that I have seen, I don't expect you to believe this - I'm explaining it for the benefit of those who want the truth - which is very few - because the vast majority are satisfied with the lies from the insane geologists and insane creationists.

    Three observations:
First: The conversation set a new record for the number of times the word "paradigm" was used, indeed, over-worked.
Second: I'm not sure if the point was that boulders are strong or that water is strong. Early on it was boulders which were in photos from 150 years ago and unfazed by water as of today, and that, in spite of floods since then. Later it was water that is strong and look at what cavitation did ... 6,250 tons of concrete needed to fill the hole. Personally, I vote for water despite some stubborn boulders. My combined point for the first and second observations is that the talk was confusing ... and I've taken two college level geology courses, have a doctorate in Christian apologetics, and am a creationist! The average Joe Blow must be befuddled.
Third: And this is my own stuff ... I just wonder and ponder why God has allowed the folly of evolution to overwhelm education the world over turning millions away from the truth that He is the Creator of all that is. The longer I live the more I understand why the Bible says that belief in God and trusting His work of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, is a matter of FAITH not PROOF. There are so many things that don't make sense, so many question that must remain unanswered. But, I'm hangin' in there ... bettin' the farm on Him. And that's my paradigm.

Even if it just so happened that there was a giant flood that caused the Grand Canyon and it just so happened to be at the same time period (I am not conceding this mind you) there would still be absolutely no reason to suppose that it was "Noah's flood." Also, the massive earthquakes at the time of the Noahic flood would have caused much more settling and compacting of the materials. Totally agree ‼️ My bride and I, when living in Arizona, took a tour of the Grand Canyon with a Biblical Geologist and discovered that the Grand Canyon was most likely formed in about 2-3 weeks with the receding Flood water rushing out at 125+ mph just carving it's way to the low area in now San Diego.
    .
It would take a ton of typing to retell hours of information. Suffice to say that two of the geological discoveries are that in the layers the animals found are the same in all the layers without contamination. Anyone can look this up. If the canyon took millions of years this would not be. Second, there is no debris at the bottom of the layers. Which would happen with millions of years of slow erosion. So the canyon had to happen fast. It was carved and very quickly.

Every human culture on the planet has an authentic historical record of the Global Flood, not just the Judeo-Christian tradition. As such, the fact that some flood accounts are older than the Biblical account should be expected. The various accounts are all still true, no matter which account is older, and the similar details of the various accounts from all over the world add credibility to the Judeo-Christian Global Flood history.
For example, the flood account in the Holy Bible features Noah and his family, and it is the same historical event that is recorded in the Matsya Purana. The following account, taken from the Matsya Purana, describes Noah’s three sons as Shem, Sham, and Jyapeti, who appear in the Holy Bible as Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Here are just a few of the similarities between the two accounts:
“To Satyavarman, that sovereign of the whole earth, were born three sons: the eldest Shem, then Sham, and thirdly, Jyapeti by name. They were all men of good morals, excellent in virtue and virtuous deeds, skilled in the use of weapons with which to strike, or to be thrown; brave men, eager for victory in battle. But Satyavarman, being continually delighted with devout meditation, and seeing his sons fit for dominion, laid upon them the burdens of government.”
    - Matsya Purana
The following account, also taken from the Matsya Purana, describes some of the people who, due to a severe flood, lived in an immense ark for the duration of the catastrophe (just like the people described in the Bible):
“Whilst he remained honoring and satisfying the demigods and priests and kine, one day, by the act of destiny, the king, having drunk mead, became senseless and lay asleep naked. Then was he seen by Sham, and by him were his two brothers called:
To whom he said, "What now has befallen? In what state is this our sire?" By these two he was hidden with clothes, and called to his senses again and again.
Having recovered his intellect, and perfectly knowing what had passed, he cursed Sham, saying, "Thou shalt be the servant of servants."
And since thou wast a laugher in their presence, from laughter thou shalt acquire a name. Then he gave Sham the wide domain on the south of the snowy mountains.
And to Jyapeti he gave all on the north of the snowy mountains; but he, by the power of religious contemplation, attained supreme bliss.”
Genesis 9 also recounts an incident wherein Noah was found in a drunken stupor by his son, Ham. The similarities of the two accounts are too great to discount them as mere coincidence; the two scriptures are clearly referring to the same event and the same family.
Noah’s son Shem was the progenitor of the Semites.
Satyavarman told Sham that he would acquire a name from laughter. Two of the tribes descended from Sham were the Ha-Ha and Ho-Ho. They later migrated to other parts of the world. The Ha-Ha(am), or Ham, meaning "The Ha people," were the founders of Egypt. Other descendants of Sham, the Hohokam, settled in the American Southwest. Kam derives from the Sanskrit Gana, meaning "tribe." Thus, Hohokam means "The Ho-Ho Tribe." Notice that both groups were desert people.
The entire history of Noah's Ark that appears in the Old Testament closely parallels the Vedic history of the Global Flood.
"The progeny of Adamis and Hevas soon became so wicked that they were no longer able to coexist peacefully.
Brahma therefore decided to punish his creatures. Vishnu ordered Vaivasvata to build a ship for himself and his family. When the ship was ready, and Vaivasvata and his family were inside with the seeds of every plant and a pair of every species of animal, the big rains began and the rivers began to overflow."
    - Mahabharata
Not only are the names of the main players in the Biblical history of the flood the same as the family of Satyavarman, but the names Adamis and Hevas are strikingly similar to the Biblical names Adam and Eve. Also, in the histories found in both scriptures, the rains fell for forty days and forty nights.
In addition, there is tons and tons of sea salt all throughout the caves at the peaks of the Himalayan mountains, which are the highest mountains on the planet. How could all of that dehydrated seawater have gotten into those caves, unless the seawater had once risen to that level? Google Himalayan pink sea salt for proof.

Nicky, good question. That's using logic. Sadly, that's missing from too many religious discussions these days. God created an old universe, suggesting that people who read the Bible literally are seeing the *_ink,_* but missing the spirit, just like the Pharisees of Christ's day. There is one group of people who would love for Christians to be the butt end of ridicule for ridiculous reasons, instead of for the actual teachings of God and Christ. These are the type of people Christ described who look, but do not see, and listen, but do not hear.
Noah's Flood likely would not have left any geological evidence, because most of it came from the "deep." But we do have evidence of the Flood -- one competing species which went extinct at the *_non-literal_* flood date of 27,970 BC.

However, I'll tell you I have never and will never look at the Canyon, that I see nearly every day, and think that this is the result of millions of years. On a smaller scale and not under the same set of circumstances, one can simply go up and look at the current Lake Mead and see geological layering that bares a strong resemblance to the layers in the Canyon. And these have happened over the past 3-5 years, not millions of years. That said, there are many here who think the same as I do, but, as you can imagine, they are drowned out by the screams of those who will not look at another possibility for the Canyon's creation.

We drove from SoCal to Omaha this summer through Nevada, Utah and Colorado. Everywhere in Utah and the west of Colorado one can see this pattern of horizontal layers cut radically by tons of water. It is actually easy to imagine all those layers being laid down then washed out by the retreating flood, just like one sees at the beach when sand layers laid by waves are eroded by lagoon waters that breach a sand dam and carve mini canyons. Also, in the California desert, one sees it in the huge dry lake beds all through the Mojave. Where did all that water come from in the first place?

*The Grand Canyon is unique in that it is the product of a flood AND a seismic event, both on a scale beyond anything witnessed before or since.*
*The North Rim of the canyon is around 1200 feet higher than the South Rim..* but the stratigraphic layers match up perfectly. Erosion, whether rapid or slow, can't create that height disparity without eliminating the uppermost layers comprising that 1200 feet... but, as you can see, those layers were NOT eroded away because they are still there. By the way, it is not just the South Rim that is 1200 feet lower than the North Rim... *The entire southern plateau stretching across the northwestern part of Arizona is lower by 1200 feet!* There is nothing in modern geology that can explain the Grand Canyon other than the *combined forces of an earthquake and receding floodwaters* ---- both unlike anything ever seen in human history.
The *lack of erosion on the canyon walls* shows that it didn't happen over millions of years and was not caused by simply wind and water. Additionally, the *Cardenas Lavas* confirm the combination of the quake and the flood...

So will confidence in His ability to provide better and better answers. For instance, I suspect that the fountains of the deep appeared in the oceans, so zero erosion would have been involved for most of the water which was added. @IsGenesisHistory  Год назад

      Greetings @7inrain,
The Bible does not give a specific date of 6,000 years for the earth’s age. As such, though many young-earth creationists do accept that as an approximate age, many estimates have been provided over the years, ranging from ~6,000 years old to ~12,000 years old. Please see the following video for more details:
𝘌𝘱𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘥𝘦 54: 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴: 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯
      ruclips.net/video/RwDzEW32snk/видео.html
You mentioned a fossilized coral reef that measures 1000 meters in thickness and is located in Germany. We would need a much more detailed description of this reef to provide a proper answer to your question. However, there are several possibilities worth considering. First, it is important to understand that geologists are not necessarily using the term “reef” in the same way a layperson would use it. There are two primary types of reefs relevant to your question: autochthonous reefs (reefs formed in place as a result of slow biological activity, e.g. Great Barrier Reef) and allochthonous reefs (reefs formed by the transport of a pre-existing reef, e.g. Stuart Bay Formation). From a young-earth perspective, an allochthonous reef could have formed at any time in history, before, during, or after the Flood. However, autochthonous reefs could only form before the Flood or after the Flood. Even if the reef where you live is autochthonous, this would not have necessarily taken more than several thousand years to form. The growth rate of a reef is dependent on the temperature of the water and the microorganisms it is composed of. For more information, please see the following articles listed below:
      answersingenesis.org/fossils/how-are-fossils-formed/ancient-fossil-reefs-formed-in-the-flood/
      answersingenesis.org/aquatic-animals/massive-modern-reefs-finding-time-to-grow/
And finally, we have never made the claim that explanations regarding the formation of fossil reefs can be found in “an ancient book written by goat herders who knew nothing about the world.” The Bible contains historical accounts that, while penned by dozens of different authors, is ultimately written by the Creator Himself (2 Timothy 3:16), who knows everything about the world. If these written accounts are describing historical events that really happened (and we believe they did!), then they have real world implications. As such, while the Bible does not specifically talk about fossil reefs, we can use the historical events it records to come up with scientifically testable hypotheses about what evidence we might expect to find these historical events actually occurred. That is not to say we have solved all mysteries in the universe, but the Bible’s historical record can (and has) been used to come up with many good explanations for the scientific data we see in the world around us. Theres not enough water on the planet to fill the grand canyon so saying a "global flood" caused it is quite foolish. Noahs flood wasnt global it was regional. The reason its said to be global was because modern humans still hadnt left africa when it happened. The flood story and the story of Atlantis are both connected because this happened in north africa around 11000 bc.

Well, yes, that is right. Slow erosion forms valleys, fast erosion canyons. And they have found several basalt layers that blocked the Colorado River when they were formed. When the dams broke, huge masses of water forced their way down the Grand Canyon. It is very logical and fits well within conventional geology. But the creationists were the first to point out the floodmade character of the canyon, and unfortunately, nobody in conventional geology wanted to listen.

Further erosion by tributary streams led to the canyon’s widening. There are few scientists that give credence to Steve Austin's perversion of the facts.

Discovery of a creature in Africa by the locals they called something like Mokeiy Membi that apparently was a stegosaurus, sightings of a dinosaur like creature in Lake Superior. An experiment in recreating pre-flood conditions by increasing atmospheric pressure and oxygen and introducing various animals and plants. Then there was a discussion like this, where he showed a scenerio where trapped mud broke through and cut the grand canyon very rapidly., I have always wished I could find out who that was that produced them.

I don't know what is right (I have my ideas though) but more and more, as people really look at the evidence and explain alternatives to the conventional lines of thought, I realize that we have to question it all. Was the Grand Canyon formed during the great cataclysm that happened 13 thousand years ago ? Was the great flood of Noah a result of that great event? Was mankind's collective mentality and awareness wiped out b/c certain protections weren't taken? Leaving us to start over from scratch, like a computer with a blank hard drive?
