Met James recently in Germany at the Silvergain Meeting with Adox' Mirko Böddecker, Lina Bessanova, Nicholas Llasera, Carmencita, Silbersalz at Leica Frankfurt.
It was James who I had great chat with at the photo show, he’s full of knowledge about the development of pyro. Going to try it soon. Thanks for the video Roger.
I haven't been to London in 40 years!!! Cool to see what you did, I had no idea there were tripod free zones!!! I haven't been a medium in many years!!
Lovely photography and great humor, Roger. A few weeks ago I shot one the rolls of the XX5222 that I had in the fridge and devloped it in HC110 1+63. The results were beautiful even though Manchester sky is always overcast. I wonder what it would be like in 510 Pyro? Have to give it a try. Just a piece of information, Kodak only ever marketed its sill photography films with the bandname Kodak. The motion picture emulsions were always marketed under the Eastman name, so if you ever see a cassette of Kodak XX5222 then you'd know that it was hand wound onto a generic reel and the label was added later. Take care.
I just found you recently, I really enjoy your videos you make very high quality ones and very informative ones also. I've been doing black and white photography off and on since I was about 8 years old, my dad had a dark room in the basement and me and my best friend used it constantly, my dad would buy us plus x and tri-x film in bulk and we would shoot all kinds of pictures and do all the work ourselves. I'm 54 now and over the years I've been more off than on as far as black and white goes but I'm preparing to get back into it. I have a darkroom I can set up in the bathroom when I need to, so I'm picking up tips again, it's been awhile, I have to relearn some things. I live in Indianapolis Indiana, quite a ways from where you live, I look forward to your great content, it's good stuff!
I actually have booked myself on to the Holga week London photo wander coming up this Sunday. I have decided not to take the DSLR as it might be a bit of a crutch as I am more of an occasional film guy.
Same happens here in NY a lot. You're impeding pedestrian flow with tripods, so they ask you to get a permit. Depends on where you go but 9 times out of 10 on the street you really don't get bothered.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I think London is a bit more hard-assed when it comes to things like this. Never had an encounter or experience on the streets, but places like the subway and Grand Central have strict no tripods without permits policy. Makes sense, but the price is ridiculous: $250
Using Ilford HC with 510 Pyro??? Heresy! 👀🤣 Honestly, great laugh and day out, it had been too long since our last meet up! I'll send you some XL of the t-shirts LOL, I don't think I have any of Zone Imaging in that size but the 510 Pyro and the UK Facebook group T-shirts, for sure!
A great example of "don't forget to look up". I've spent so much time walking those streets and I doubt I'd ever have though to take any of those pictures. If I sign up to patreon, can I vote for to never wear those t-shirts on camera again (I know it's Halloween mate, but blimey!)

Hey James and Roger, Ansel Adams (just re-reading The Print) Mentions that Pyro development of negatives leaves a "pyro stain" on the neg yellow in colour?
Yeah, it's a yellowish brown This is beneficial in many ways for unrivalled highlight separation for printing with VC papers, masking grain and fake density so there is less grain clumping hence less graininess again (the latter two benefits both scanning and printing) but these will only be beneficial if the pyro developer in question was well formulated - there are tons from the 1870s until the 1990s, 510 Pyro is the newest being from this side of the millennium
wow. The London underground looks downright luxurious compared to the rat infested subways of Manhattan hahah. Very cool to see more content on 510 pyro, it’s a developer I’ve been interested in possibly using at home. J lane is the dry plate guy right? I would LOVE to see a video dedicated to those; I really have been interested in buying some to try for some time.
That's Jason Lane 🤣🤣🤣 don't worry! Lot's of people get us mixed up all the time! You can get your Pyro fix from Freestyle, North East Photographic, CatLABs or Hidden Light in the USA :) J Lane plates can be developed in 510 Pyro too but the times will depend on UV light levels affecting the ASA
@@jameslane3846 ahhh, my apologies for the mixup but thank you for the correction! I use HC110 at home but more so for it’s longevity than the results. I’ve heard 510 Pyro can give much sharper/finer grained negatives but has similar long-term keeping properties so that would be a major plus for me.
@@MrRom92DAW I do know basic BnW emulsion making so maybe I might go into that in the future for shits and giggles just to up that confusion 😏 Yeah, right on all counts plus 510 Pyro will give longer tonality too as a pyro developer
@@jameslane3846 heh, I’m down for the eventual glass plate shootout if you ever get around to it. Are you familiar with Flic Film’s “Black White & Green”? I’ve also been hearing very good things about it lately, it’s an ascorbic acid and Phenidone liquid concentrate developer. So probably a bit of a different flavor from pyrocatchetol based developers. I’d love to know how they compare. It’s designed to be very eco-friendly (same as Xtol being another popular ascorbic acid developer) and this is a secondary consideration to me relative to image quality and keeping properties, but in this case between these two developers I do feel it is a valid consideration ti make as I’ve heard some pyro developers can be particularly nasty/hazardous to work with. I’ve heard Black White & Green described as “liquid Xtol” which I like the sound of because Xtol is my favorite developer for its extremely fine grain and impeccable shadow detail, it’s just extremely impractical for me to use due to the extremely short shelf life. I’d be lucky to get 2 rolls after mixing up 5 gallons at the rate I shoot.
@@MrRom92DAW be up for that! I know of it well and that I disapprove that they didn't credit the original inventor and retain the real name 510 Pyro isn't a pyrocatechol developer, it's pyrogallol based and 510 Pyro is very eco friendly - fully biodegradable and oxidises fast so aquatic life is unaffected. The concentrate is classified as harmful however but not the working solution which is safe to handle (at this point it is like coffee as pyrogallol and catechol are the developing agents in coffee), wear gloves particularly for the concentrate and you won't have an issue. BnW & G (or rather PC-TEA) is not like Xtol for results, for one, it is about 0.7 pH higher for the working solution so it is grainier and is a non-solvent developer while Xtol is a solvent developer! It also contains the exact same ingredients as 510 Pyro but the pyrogallol But PC TEA is still a good developer, our third developer will be similar but much finer grained to the point it makes HP5 practically grainless while maintaining full film speed, good tonality similar to Xtol yes and very very sharp. Ilford have even asked for it as they loved the results so much
Any problem with pouring 510 Pyro down the drain when finished developing? My city doesn’t offer much help in terms of disposal so just wondering if small amounts of 510 is toxic to the environment. Thanks!
Hi, 510 Pyro is suitable for drains and septic tanks It's fully biodegradable and working solution oxidises fast when diluted in water so won't affect aquatic life The solvent is rapidly biodegradable (used in 85% of cosmetics and soaps) and two of the three developing agents are readily biodegradable and found naturally in either fruits, avocadoes or coffee, the third one is phenidone which is inherently biodegradable and the working solution's concentration is practically negligible and is unavoidable as all film developers since the 80s contain this
You have to travel all the way to london for passport? Seems like a huge hassle. Also, to get even you should gift James one of your t-shirts in small size 😆
I'm to sure but I think it's to stop "professional' works, selling prints, video production maybe? It was a light bag tripod with a wooden camera on top! I've had this often around cities. Usually when it's private owned areas. Canary Wharf in London is another. Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth. I must ask next time.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss It's a funny old law. I presume if you carry a camera body around nothing to stop you getting images like you have in the video. Has any group ever raised the issue of why they're banned?
TRIPOD POLICE: I call them. Basically security guards protecting the area I was in called "South Bank". Apparently it is privately owned and on their website it states "Photography and filming using a tripod without prior permission is forbidden in many areas of South Bank due to security and access issues. If you are planning to use a tripod for personal or amateur use, you must still seek permission first from the appropriate landowner"... I am guessing this is due to Photographer and Film makers profiting from imagery of their land and the owners want a slice of the pie. You can't stop tourists using their mobile phones/DSLR's etc for footage. Everyone has a camera in their pocket today! But at least by not permitting the use of a tripod it lowers the chance of any professional imagery works taking place. And I would imagine if I had a large broadcast camera on my shoulder or taking photographs with a crew of a model in the area I would also get stopped. Tripod or no tripod. You would need to get a permit to do this. I am not sure about the "security" aspect. Maybe tripods can be a trip hazard to the public and they want to see your public liability insurance when applying for a permit to shoot there. But I'm sure its more to do with professional imagery works and charging for a use permit. This is Southbank Website if you're interested southbanklondon.com/photography-film
